Current programs and accomplishments MRF is currently working on four inter-related projects within the broader picture of artisan development, water security, education and women’s development in the textile sector:

The Meher Road Foundation is a registered non-profit whose mission is to support artisan development projects.

The Foundation’s purpose is help artisans maintain traditional craft skills while developing marketing and business abilities that will provide economic stability for their communities.

MRF works in a fully integrated, transparent manner with Mehera Shaw Textiles. MRF’s first project is an artisan up-cycling project designed to produce fashion accessories from post-production scrap, as well as creating cooperative, mentor-based education and training centers, and microsocial enterprises for artisan communities.

.

1) Up-cycling project using post-production scrap fabric to create value-added fashion accessories. Early stage.

.

2) Design and installation of a scaleable ETP unit for water treatment for dyeing and printing. Installation was completed in early February, 2019; certification for GOTS will follow a period of data-collection and analysis, in terms of filtration and reduced water use. The Foundation is working with the Rajasthani Printers’ Association to make 50 individual units for home-based printers.

.

3) Preservation and rejuvenation of the vegetable dye block-printing industry through documentation, academic and practical presentations. Early planning stages.

.

4) “Bridging the Gap,” education and outreach programs in collaboration with MSTPL. Intermittent project.

The Upcycling Project is a Women’s Development and Skills Training project of the Meher Road Foundation.

We train women artisans to make fashion accessories and homewares using post-production fabric and basic hand stitching techniques.

We provide the training, raw materials and designs in support of cottage industry development. The women in the program are from urban slum and rural areas in and around Jaipur.

Transparent relationships The women agree to a price per piece in advance, are given free skills training and once approved, are given the raw materials for use in making the product ordered. They receive cash payments and sign a voucher for all work completed at the time they complete the work.

Upcycling is the process of converting leftover materials into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Even with good environmental and labor standards, garment production typically generates much scrap fabric.
