Kingston Permaculture Network Monthly Meeting, Monday 13th September The meeting is from 8-10pm at the Environment Centre, Fairfield East. FREE ENTRY bring drinks and snacks to share. Join us in watching inspiring and thought provoking films, discussing personal and community projects and offering and receiving support with permaculture designs. The group has been running for over two years and has organised Action Based Workshops, Permaculture Training Courses and acted as a spring board for new projects. This month's meeting will focus on catching up with peoples’ progress in developing sites, producing food and seeds (for next year’s Seed Swap in February) and we'll consider the design in progress at Parkfields Community Garden off Tudor Drive. TTK Open Meeting, Wednesday 22nd September If you're working on a project, have a new green idea for Kingston or want to find out more about TTK, the monthly open meeting is the place to start to meet like-minded people, join up all Kingston's great green activities and get support from each other for projects, events and initiatives. From 6:30pm at Kingston Environment Centre, Fairfield East, KT1 2PT Green Business Day at the Kingston Environment Centre, Thurs 23rd September Explore what is a green business and specifically how to develop your own environmental policy and action plan. The workshops are FREE and will be run from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm. Free ‘Training for Transition’, Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th September Free bursary places are available on the next "Training for Transition" course in London, on Sept 25th/26th. Stitch in Time, Wednesday 6th October, 7.00pm TTK’s October sociable sewing session runs from 7.00 - 9.00pm at Kingston Environment Centre, Fairfield East, KT1 2PT. Come along to get help with your own making or mending or altering project, or to teach or learn a new skill or to join in the next few months' creative activities. These will include making reusable mini-bags for Christmas presents, especially awkward shaped ones, and decorating these or anything else you'd like to bring along with appliqué and embroidery (which can be anything from simple chain stitch, handy for initialling children's clothes, to really beautiful artworks). Faith & the Environment Seminar, Thursday 28th October From 6pm-8.30pm, Council Chamber, The Guildhall, Kingston KT1 1EU As well as guest speakers from different faith stances, there will be displays on sustainable living, films, free refreshments and chance for group discussions using inspirational ideas from round the world for how we should live in harmony with our environment. Everyone, of any faith/belief or none, is welcome to this free event but there will be a limited capacity, so please book your place as soon as possible. Kingston Road Allotment Association asks for petition support The Kingston Road Allotment Association is seeking public support for a petition to the Council to negotiate a new, workable tenancy agreement for all Kingston allotments managed by the Council's contractor. The petition can be found at http://epetition.kingston.public-i.tv/epetition_core/community/petition/967 and you do not have to be an allotment holder or live in the Borough to sign - just interested in making sure that growing local food is as easy as possible! Several thousand fewer plastic bags in the environment? Thanks to John Legate and Inaam who helped on Plastic-Bag-Free Day, Save the World Club, TTK Stitch in Time bag-makers, All Saints Church and Kingston Market traders, around 320 long-life bags and fliers were given away to shoppers on Saturday 11th. That means 320 shoppers who now have less reason to take the 300 throwaway plastic bags that the average shopper collects every year, and who are better informed about the damage plastic bags do in the environment. Volunteers also gave away stickers, badges and fridge magnets, and persuaded almost 100 passers-by to sign the Greener Upon Thames petition asking the Government to impose a levy or ban on plastic bags. Greener Kingston organiser Marilyn apologises if any TTK helpers turned up after 2.00pm, but all the bags had gone by then! "I'll be better off if I can tell them there are 100 local shoppers supporting this idea," says Des, so please send a supportive email to des@savetheworldclub.org. And please send in your ideas for a sustainable Christmas to share with TTK. Transition Town Hampton? Hampton resident Mike Wiggins is interested in starting up Transition Town Hampton, and wonders whether any Hampton residents are involved with TTK and would like to discuss the possibility. For more information contact Phil Tulba at phillip.tulba@youngfoundation.org and visit www.youcankingston.com UK rail stations cycle hire survey (for ATOC) Over the summer ATOC (Association of Train Operating Companies) have been doing some research into the potential for cycle hire at UK rail stations, which has involved gathering case study evidence and interviewing stakeholders. They are keen to get the views of as many cyclists and rail passengers as possible, so have produced a short web survey.
