Events this fortnight... and beyond A Celebration of the Thames: Doorstep Heritage and Landscape Design, Wednesday 13th October 2010 Organised by the Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames and Kingston University. Speakers are Richard Flenley and Stuart Downward. Venue: Kingston University, Penrhyn Road, Kingston upon Thames, 6pm reception and exhibition and talks at 7pm. Weaning Woking off Oil: Exploring Transition Locally, Thursday 14th October From 7.15pm, Christchurch, Woking. Inspired by the Transition Town model (www.transitionnetwork.org), this will be a free informal and participatory ‘open space’ event to discuss what we want to do to wean Woking off oil and create a better, fairer and more resilient place in which to live. This is the best introduction to TTK if you want to get involved in projects for the first time and the best place to meet people to work with on greening Kingston - so do come along! Do feel free to bring food to share and/or contribute a donation towards costs. Saturdays 23 October and 20 November If you want to keep cycling this autumn, now is the time to equip yourself with the skills to make sure your bicycle is in first-rate condition. Kingston Council’s cyclist training team is running two Saturday morning bike maintenance courses on the 23 October and 20 November. Join the Climate Forum for an afternoon of speakers, discussions, film etc. and we can all work together towards the goal of Zero Carbon by 2030. Speakers include Ben Brangwyn of Transition Towns and other inspiring speakers such as Caroline Lucas (Green MP), Alexis Rowell (Camden CAN), George Marshall (COIN) and John Stewart (Airport Watch, HACAN). Diversity workshop, Saturday 6th November From 10am to 3.45pm, C_SCAIPE, Kingston University, Penrhyn Road, KT1 2EE Catrina Pickering of the Transition Network (the charity set up to support Transition initiatives) will be travelling up from Devon to run this important workshop. We will be exploring issues around power and diversity, and learning how to take effective action to reach the corners of our local community we haven't yet managed to engage. The From the Ground Up Food Co-op offers the Kingston Community affordable certified organic fruit and vegetables at exceptional prices. Kingston's only organic food co-op has increased its member list Hugely recently which means it can also introduce a stream of enhancements, and here is news of two new services they are very excited about... Organic breads available with orders from 11 October The From the Ground Up Food Co-op has partnered with Flour Power City Bakery (http://www.flourpowercity.co.uk/about_us.htm) in order to provide its members a selection of organic breads. Flour Power City Bakery is passionate about the quality of the breads they create...in their words ‘Our watchword at Flour Power City is ‘quality’. Naturally that means using only the finest ingredients, such as the lovingly milled flour from Shipton Mill, which is why many of our breads are certified by the Organic Food Federation (OFF).’ Both Flour Power City and From the Ground Up are aligned in their goals to provide quality sustainable food that is accessible and affordable. A new additional collection point - Canbury Arms Pub, Kingston For your convenience, The From the Ground Up has established a second collection point at the Canbury Arms Pub (http://www.thecanburyarms.com/). Michael Pearson, the owner of the 'Arms' is very supportive of the From the Ground Up Co-op initiative and has graciously offered his pub for food packing and order collection. You will be able to pick up your orders on Friday morning at 9am, fortnightly, starting 15 October. The Pub is located at 49 Canbury Park Road, Kingston KT2 6LQ. You can still collect from Kingston Environment Centre on Saturday mornings from 11 - 1. From now on order forms will ask you to choose the Canbury Arms or the Kingston Environment Centre as your collection venue. And also...
You’re Invited – Wednesday 10 November 2010 - Eat and Meet The From the Ground Up is a food Cooperative which means all opinions count. And because they are all volunteers they need your help and ideas. From the Ground Up is growing - if you want to have a voice in its development and what it can offer the Kingston Community please join the co-op. Discussions will cover policy, funding, marketing, products, volunteering, technology, community activities (e.g. schools), and anything else people want to discuss. And there is great food! These are quarterly meetings and the next one is planned for Wednesday 10 November. The venue and time (evening) will be communicated closer to the date. How you can get involved... and do you have some news to share? TTK always needs volunteers, contact the TTK Steering Group if you can offer your help: ttkingstonsteering@yahoogroups.com.
