Tintin at the cinema Are you keen on the cinema? Then don’t miss The Adventures of Tintin: The Unicorn’s Secret. It’s the first of 3 films about the likeable*, courageous* cartoon character who was created by the Belgian illustrator Hergé in 1929. Two directors, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, have joined together to direct the three films. They are all in 3D and were made using the technique performance capture, which copies the facial expressions of the actors onto the cartoon characters created by computer. The actors, whose faces will be used, are a guarantee of success Jamie Bell, famous for Billy Elliot, will be the courageous reporter Tintin, and Daniel Craig, who played James Bond, will be the evil*pirate Red Rackham. In the film, Tintin goes in search of hidden treasure in a submerged, sunken ship*.

Justin Bieber Put your hand up if you’ve never heard of Justin Bieber? So where have you been living for the past few years? Justin is the teen idol of the moment and is loved by teenagers all over the world. So read on to find out more about this YouTube phenomenon. His early life Justin was born March 1st 1994 in Stratford in Canada. While he was growing up, he became interested in many things, but especially music. In fact, he taught himself to play the piano, drums, guitar and trumpet. He also started writing songs and some of these he recorded and uploaded* onto YouTube.

YouTube and success He became an overnight success as many people saw his videos and immediately loved his pop/rhythm and blues style. Shortly after he was contacted by Scooter Braun who invited him to Atlanta, USA to record his songs in a studio. His debut single was released in 2009 and reached a high position in the music charts*.

His image After he started to become successful, Justin changed his ‘normal’ image to a more ‘streetwise’ look. He started wearing baseball caps, hooded tops and ‘flashy’ trainers*. Recently he’s also had his hair cut, but his original hairstyle was well-loved and was one of the most copied hairstyles by teenage boys. After he changed his hairstyle, a piece of his hair was sold on eBay for $40,608 and the money was given to charity.

Facebook forever? By next year Facebook will probably have exceeded* 600 million users. Who will be its friends and who will be its rivals?*
Who will use it the most? Probably the biggest age group will be those between 18 and 34, like today. However, the over 65s will see the fastest increase in users (+ 124%) and teenagers between 13 and 15 (+ 82%). If the trend* continues like this, Facebook will be used by all age groups.

Who will collaborate*? In different countries like China, it’s forbidden* to connect to Facebook. But Wang Jianzhou, head of the biggest Chinese telecommunications company, met Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg in January. Mark said: “We’re considering the possibility of working together in some way”.
Who won’t be able to use it anymore? In 2010, the Ontario teacher’s association (Canada) forbade* 230,000 teachers to accept requests for friendship by their students on Facebook. Who knows if others will do the same?
Who will be its rivals? In the film The Social Network (2010) the director (Fincher) tells the story of Facebook. The most famous phrase in the film is “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making some enemies”. According to the experts, the most likely* competition will be Diaspora, Google me and Path.
Facebook’s rivals Diaspora: it’s a software that you have to download onto your PC. It isn’t a social network. It was created by four friends who abandoned Facebook because it didn’t protect personal information. Google Me: Its creator Adam D’Angelo says that “Google Me will soon be reality”. But nobody has said yet what it’ll be like, only that it will be simple to use. Path: it’s called a “personal network” because it only allows you to have 50 friends. On Path you share information about people, places and things in a comfortable and practical environment.

The film The Social Network is based on the book Accidental Billionaires by the writer Ben Mezrich. It tells the story of Zuckerberg and Saverin, both Harvard students and computer geniuses. After having invented Facebook, they both become famous but have problems and break off their friendship.

The Highland Games
Every year all over Scotland we can find a very important and exciting event called the Highland Games. It is a celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture, and also takes place in other countries around the world, especially in the USA, where people of Celtic origins live. The games include tests of strength such as the Caber Toss (throwing a long pole), the Stone Put (throwing a heavy stone using only one hand), the Scottish Hammer throw (throwing a round metal ball attached to a chain) and much more. There are also contests of Scottish dancing and music contests using traditional Scottish instruments like bagpipes and drums. In September you can visit the Braemar Highland Games in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This event is attended every year by the Royal Family.

Sherlock Holmes Elementary, My dear Watson!
This famous, fictional detective needs no introduction. He’s well-known throughout the world thanks to the many books written by Arthur Conan Doyle and the many films and TV series he’s appeared in. But what’s so special about this master of logical reasoning*? Read on to find out more. The birth of Sherlock Holmes The author Conan Doyle first wrote about Sherlock in 1887, which makes him a very old man! He took inspiration for his character from a certain doctor called Joseph Bell, who Conan Doyle used to work for when he was a clerk* at the hospital. They share the same ability to make conclusions from the smallest details.

His loyal assistant We can’t possibly talk about Sherlock Holmes without mentioning his faithful assistant and companion Dr Watson. The pair even share the same lodgings* at 221B Baker Street, London until Watson gets married. In 1990, the Sherlock Holmes museum was opened at the above named address, where you can visit a reproduction of how the place might have been in the 19th century.
Sherlock’s Character We can learn a lot about Sherlock’s character from reading his books. We find out that he’s a master of disguise* and a forensic* expert. He is able to use
a variety of weapons to fight his enemies such as a sword, a pistol, a cane*, his fists and even martial arts. At times he appears arrogant and he enjoys baffling* the policemen with his deductions*. His rooms are very untidy but he is able to find everything he needs in the chaos. He has strange eating habits and often doesn’t eat for long periods while he’s trying to solve a crime. He smokes a pipe and this is often one of the symbols connected to Sherlock Holmes.
The end of Sherlock In 1893, Conan Doyle decided to kill off* his character as he wanted to devote more time writing historical novels. The book was called the Final Problem in which Sherlock was pushed over the edge of a cliff* by his archenemy Moriarty. Sherlock’s fans were

not very happy with this decision and finally after 8 years, the writer decided to bring back Sherlock to life. He continued writing about him for many more years. In his final book ‘His Last Bow’ Holmes retires to the countryside where he starts beekeeping* as a hobby.
Sherlock and the big screen While Conan Doyle wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories concerning Sherlock, numerous films and TV series have been made about him. In fact, Sherlock has appeared in the Guinness World Records many times as the most portrayed* film character with 75 actors playing him in more than 211 films. In 2009, a modern version starring Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law was released with great success. The sequel is going to be released this year and is called Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows.

If you’re keen on* mythological films then you’ll certainly have seen Thor where Natalie plays a young scientist who meets on Earth a very tall, blond God who is disguised* as a normal man.
Natalie is a vegetarian. She keeps herself fit dancing and skating and reads a lot. Animals are her passion and she is involved in the organization PETA. Obviously she has her own pet, Noodles, which she’s very attached to.
