Reminding the traditions and lifestlye Individual Work (Design Part) 2019 Winter 3 Months Thesis Studio Advisor: Prof. Mason White In the past three decades, as a result of modernization and urbanization, a large number of people have migrated from rural to urban areas in China. Many villages have become ghost towns, and the traditional rural lifestyle has been forgotten. The change has been so fast and so dramatic that most Chinese citizens have not been able to reflect on its consequences. By using traditional methods of design and construction and assembling old materials, and by choosing a perfect “ghost” — a town that has been abandoned and reoccupied by nature — this project aims to preserve and encourage the traditions of rural China and provide a model for a new ruralism in this era of urbanism.

Echo of the Lost

In Fuyang area, which is a urban area near by Hang Zhou in Zhe Jiang Province. Base on researchs by Wang Shu, there are 300 villages in this area. Unfortunately, to his perspective, about 20 villages are worth to preserve.

City Small Town

Half- Abandoned Abandoned

Abandoned Hang Zhou kept its scale until thirty years ago. The character of Hangzhou is “half city, half landscape”. The west lake has the similar scale to city. In 1990 the populationis 2.2 million. In 2007, the population is 21 million.

Disadvantage: Lack of integrated social resources. "remote", "infrastructure", "education" etc. Advantage: "natural resources", "existed space", "relatively better transportation" etc.

Houtouwan which is near by Ningbo and Shanghai, where tourists can take 6 hours boat to it, was once a prosperous fishing village, with a 1980s population of more than 3,000 residents. However, because of its remote and hard-to-access location, its residents started to move out in the '90s.

7

In 2002, the village was officially depopulated and merged into a nearby village. After decades of abandonment, empty houses in the ocean-facing, cliffside village -- some of them still furnished -- have been taken over by a blanket of lush climbing plants.

Process of assembling

Facade Spliting: Structure walls are created with precast concrete like this. They are rotated to make them similar to the random buildings on my site. then for facade splitting, structure walls are extended out of the facade then the floor came then added a corridor to view the abandoned walls near by.

Reassembling: Old materials are reassembled to construct other wall. The result is the center has same texture and materials as the site and looks grow from the site, instead of a complete new building. And it is a way of preservation.

11

Old Materials: In selected site, according to research and analysis, there are several different kinds and styles of old materials to be reassembled and reserved.

Translate lifestyle and space from a Mongolian yurt Individual Work 2017 Fall 3 Months Site: Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China Concepts and operation modes of architectrual design can be translate from observing and experience in daily life like other arts. This project extract architectural elements from a Mongolian yurt depend on my 20-years life in Inner Mongolia. By assemble structure translated from structrual system of Mongolian yurt, this market creates "flowing space" which is the main element of nomadic buildings. Moreover, extracting form of space from a yurt, there are some traditional programs in this market which can recall memories of local people and impress visitors.

"Architecture" derives from possible medium Individual Work 2018 Fall 4 Months ARC3015Y F, Option Studio Instructor: Prof. Kelly Bair Why stop at Medium or, rather, why start? As a term with which to define architectural efforts, “Medium” comes relatively late, its significance was established much earlier in other fields. Medium does not encompass the entirety of its many inflections— social, technical, political and cultural. Medium is not construction, nor is it form (not exclusively), nor is it a par-ticular configuration of building as a typological definition specifying the range of buildings into functional units. As a way to define an “architectural” impulse, Medium has a less specific, but perhaps more resonant, implication at this juncture. In reaction to the circumstance of current architectural work (a specific kind of advanced proto-architectural effort or “experimen-tal” architecture), to consider Medium is to seek a way of defining a body of work outside the limitation of more established frameworks. By delineat-ing what an architectural Medium is, or could be, the search for a singular definition quickly gives way to multiple lexicographic, but also disciplinary, definitions. With some help from the Oxford English Dictionary, what follows is a précis of Medium definitions, how those definitions relate to contemporary architectural questions, and how the overlap of these questions explicates and problematizes possible Mediums.

Site: Could be anywhere Chosen Site: Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China Instructor: Prof. Han Ying People in different areas has common relationships. Serving relationships as beinging of space design, a series of spaces can be general that they can be beuilt everywhere. This project chosen love as a starting point, then extract movements from it.These movements and vectors intersected some kinds of envelopes, I got a general architectural concepts and built general spaces without restricted by locations.

POWER STATION AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT WORKS Responsibility: Junior Architect Professional Work 2022 2 Years

Site: Shanghai, China Contribution: Architectural Design; Landscape Design It is the former site of Shanghai Power Station Auxiliary Equipment Works East Campus. The design aims to preserve the wildness, freshness, nature and downshifting character of the site by adopting the concept of limited disturbance. The existing camphor trees are retained and one of the former warehouses is transformed into an open Pavilion of Symbiosis. The design also takes into consideration the historical texture of the site and introduces a system of pedestrian routes and bicycle paths. The newly built elements, Garden of Vestige, Meadow in Succession and Eco Pond, are established through historic relics, the canal and building remains, and as the skeleton to the landscape. As an ensemble, the site provides visitors different touches of landscape when strolling inside, and together they make the East Campus an everyday landscape which not only functions as the riverside open space for city life, but also offers fun and diversity similar to traditional gardens in the Yangtze River Delta.

"Near by Tadao Ando" Responsibility: Team Leader Competition 2021 2 Months

Site: Bamako, Mali Team members: Zheng Mei, Zhiyao Shu, Xiangyang Chen, Chenyi Xu Contribution: Architectural Design; Drawings Our proposal of Enko aims to create a comprehensive educational institute as a symbol of knowledge and unity for the region of Mali. We believe in the practical thinking and our design methods tightly related to the practical condition of the site and trying to apply the maximum of "Flexibility" and "Efficient-managements of circulation" to solve the issues within rational solutions. Our goal is to create a sustainable study place considering serving as many students as possible when Mali has further development in the future.

Responsibility: Team Member Competition 2019 2 Months

Site: Beijing, China Team members: Zheng Mei, Jiacheng Wang, Muyao Zhang Contribution: Architectural Design; Drawings Large cities often show people in an objectively visible giant structure, complex and indifferent. In Beijing, urban dwellers enjoy the convenient life of the metropolis, but they barely notice that the city's underground is home to nearly one million distant migrants from the countryside and towns. The weak management of the underground space has enabled people above ground and underground to gradually form a distorted micro-urban “broken belt” in the communities where they live together. Negative emotions filled with vertical space make. The residents of both sides contradict: the dwellers on the ground are ignorant of the invisible “communities” underground, and the extreme living conditions of the underground dwellers make them desperate for the unfamiliar urban life on the ground.
