The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.
Patrick Henry “ “
Heroes live among us. It was 1973, I was in eighth grade and the entire class was summoned down to Carmel Hall, a place where we never gathered, reserved for only special events, so it had to be important. We were met by the late Melrose Park Police Lt. Fred Jackson formidable in that he inspired tremendous respect but not fear through his towering presence, starched uniform and confident tone of voice. Briefly, he explained the tradition of the American Legion Award, how it is given to a graduating student and, after providing us all with a plain sheet of paper and a pencil, we had our first encounter with the sacred democratic process: the secret ballot Everyone was asked to write down the name of the classmate they felt met the criteria. You could hear a pin drop as everyone carefully considered how they would vote in their first election There was no shortage of exemplary students in my class from patrol/scout leaders to incredible intellects and compassionate schoolmates, the decision would be difficult, to say the least. When all the votes were tallied and the school bell rang for the day, I walked home with one of my best friends who couldn’t wait to tell my mom all about the day’s pomp and circumstance. “Guess who won the American Legion Award?” she said, almost breathless from running up the stairs My mother calmly replied, “Who?” She never imagined in a million years it would be me. But it was. I was as shocked as she was that my classmates saw in me qualities such as courage and patriotism. The formal award included a pin, a medal and a framed certificate that has had a place on my wall and in my heart for more than 50 years. In July, I opened a letter from the American Legion Department of Illinois, assuming it was for a donation or a press release Once again, I was caught completely off guard: I was invited to the State Convention in Springfield to receive the Public Relations/Information Exchange Award for contributions to Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units in the Neighbors Magazine circulation area. American Legion Post #974 in Franklin Park had nominated me and accepted the award for me Just last
month, I had the honor of meeting with (left to right) Gene Korus, Sgt. at Arms and Past Commander; Bob Marshall, who served in the Marines in World War II; and Dr. Don Horn, Division Commander and 1st Division Medical Officer; as well as Anthony Siciliano, Past Division Commander (not pictured). I never expected either of these incredible distinctions and will always believe that there were and are others who are more worthy of the recognition because of their work, courage, leadership and service. But I can say this with great certainty that the true glory was not in receiving the award but standing next to these men My heart was beating fast and all I could think to myself was having read Eleanor Roosevelt’s “Wartime Prayer”: Dear Lord, Lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that somewhere, somehow out there a man died for me today. As long as there be war, I then must ask and answer, am I worth dying for? I stood next to heroes Not rock stars or athletes Heroes are among us every day. Thank them, support them in their efforts, donate to their causes and keep them in your prayers and never ever forget that all gave some, some gave all Happy Thanksgiving, neighbors.

On October 1, 2024, Army PFC Harry Jerele of Berkeley, missing for 82 years, returned home to O’Hare Airport and a hero’s welcome, a memorial service at Russo’s Hillside Chapels, a procession through Hillside, Berkeley and Elmhurst, and interment with full military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery
The oldest of seven children, Harry and his family lived in Berkeley Harry attended Melrose Park grammar school through the eighth grade; when Harry turned 18, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, eventually sent to the Philippines the day after Thanksgiving, 1941 PFC Harry Jerele served with Company B, 192nd Tank Battalion, Illinois Army National Guard, from Maywood Harry mailed his sister, Elsie, a set of souvenir postcards on the way during a brief stop in Hawaii that was the last time the family heard from him
Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese bombs rained down like a hailstorm in the Philippines, followed by a Japanese air and ground invasion Low on provisions and with no hope of reinforcements, U S General Edward King gave the order to surrender on April 9, 1942 Now prisoners of war, Harry and his unit, along with over 75,000 American and Allied troops, faced the grueling 65 mile march on foot to the POW camps. This became known as the Bataan Death March. Harry, Norman Spencer, and other members of the Maywood company were eventually moved to the Cabanatuan Prisoners Camp; on December 28, PFC Harry Jerele succumbed to disease and starvation He was 26
Buried with other deceased prisoners in Common Grave 804 of the local Cabatuan Camp Cemetery, remains were later moved to a U S mausoleum near Manila in an attempt to identify them in 1947 Those declared unidentifiable, including Harry, were buried as Unknowns at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. In 2020, the remains associated with Common Grave 804 were disinterred and sent to the DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) for analysis The laboratory analysis and the totality of circumstantial evidence available established an association between one set of these unknown remains and PFC Jerele Eighty years later, U S military scientists used DNA from Harry’s niece Rosemarie Dillon, now 89, his oldest surviving relative, which resulted in a perfect match
Harry was the son of the late Leo and the late Mary Jerele; brother of the late Ann, the late Pauline, the late Elsie, the late Leona, the late Rosemary, and the late Leo, Jr.; and uncle and great-uncle of many Arrangements were handled by Russo’s Hillside Chapels, 4500 Roosevelt Road, Hillside, where State Representative/House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch was among the many who attended as PFC Jerele received 10 posthumous medals before the procession to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery “I was honored to present his family with an official House Resolution 904 at his service in Hillside where he received full military honors,” said Speaker Welch. The entire House Resolution can be read at www.ilga.gov/legislation/ (keyword Jerele). PFC Jerele complete obituary can be read online at www russohillsidechapels com
