Everything changes when kids start to question Santa Claus. I remember recognizing my grandfather’s shoes and even the smell of his aftershave. I was surprised but not all that sad, as I remember. As a much-loved only grandchild and niece, every day was Christmas as far as they were concerned. My aunt took great pride in making sure that all my holiday clothes and presents, from the day I was born until the day she died, were the best— from Bonwit Teller, Saks, Field’s. My grandparents made sure every day was a special occasion. I’m quite confident that I was the only one who walked home from grade school for lunch to find a hot lamb chop and chicken noodle soup waiting for me on a TV tray set up in front of the Bozo Show. It’s no wonder I was devastated when the school decided everyone had to eat in the classroom. We played Yahtzee and Pokeno for hours and ate ice cream on sleepovers; we went fishing, golfing and for long rides to see houses lit up all over the suburbs. And my mom filled in all the blanks—cooking, cleaning, decorating our old white flocked tree, making our little apartment the best home and managing to fill my wish list even though I’m not sure how she did it. Looking back, which I do alot, it’s always the simple things that stand out. It’s not the closet that was once full of my preppy Polo and Izod and J.Crew must-haves—it’s the wax paper-lined tins of crescent cookies, nut cups, peanut butter bars and chocolate chips my grandmother stacked up in the “spare room”; the perfect matching bows my aunt would make for each perfectly-wrapped present; Midnight masses; and the steamed up windows and the smell of the calamari gravy that I never learned to make. It was never about the things or the money. It was always about giving from the heart. Bob Hope said once, “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things—not the great occasions—give off the greatest glow of happiness.” How true is that? Then again, if you have a spare $1.6 million, Neiman Marcus will gladly arrange for a pretty spectacular occasion: 150 luxury rooms for your closest friends to spend New Year’s Eve overlooking Times Square. For as little as $300,000, you can explore an emerald mine in Zambia; or for a mere $40,000, you’ll get six designer purses and a trip to Paris. At this point in my life, none of that has any appeal for me. You can’t put a price tag on the talking Christmas frame my godchild made for me when she was just a little girl, the red and green bells my grandmother crocheted in the months before she passed away or even the one very special gift I received just last week. After learning that one of my dearest friends and mentors from Rosary College (Dominican University) had been given an unpromising prognosis, one very accommodating Sister at Sinsinawa Mound in Wisconsin made a little miracle happen: Facetime. Sr. Clemente and I reminisced about all the years I would haul a real Frazier fir Christmas tree up to the second-floor chapel to adorn the baby in the manger and how absolutely thrilling it was for her to see the pictures of us together on my office wall via Facetime. What a gift that was. Now when I think of Christmas, I think of simple shepherds not wisemen; the drummer boy; the Dutch girl in A Miracle on 34th Street; of no room in the inn for Mary and Joseph traveling on a donkey; of a silent, holy night and not an elaborate gift-giving extravaganza. BERKELEY GIVING TREE The Village of Berkeley Giving Tree aims to bring smiles to others during the holidays. Once again this year, the Village of Berkeley has partnered with the Berkeley Public Library and Republic Bank to sponsor the Giving Tree to bring cheer to families in need within Berkeley School District #87. Currently, raffle tickets are being sold until December 8 with all proceeds going toward the Giving Tree. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 5 for $5 and can be purchased at the Berkeley Village Hall, Library or Republic Bank during regular hours. Prizes include a first prize of a 55” TV, second prize is a tablet and 3rd prize is a double chair with cooler and umbrella.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Through this message of hope to these less fortunate youngsters, the goal is to assist them in becoming responsible, productive and patriotic citizens through the joy of Christmas. Mutts’ Holiday Party and Adoption Event

Don’t miss the Holiday Party and Adoption Event on Saturday, December 16 at Elmhurst Animal Care Center, 850 S. Riverside Drive in Elmhurst. All proceeds from the day benefit Hillside-based Magnificent Mutts & Meows Rescue. The Voluntary Service Office at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital located at 5000 S. Fifth Avenue accepts items throughout the year to support the thousands of veterans who are patients and outpatients at the facility. The Comfort Needs List can be downloaded from www.hines.va.gov/giving. Individual/travel sizes of toiletry items are preferred. Currently, items needed include: combs, puzzle game books, deodorant, disposable razors, hand and body lotion, new undershirts (all sizes), new underwear (all sizes), playing cards, shampoo, shaving cream, new winter gloves and winter hats. Veterans Park District invites local residents and businesses to bring nutritious, nonperishable canned or packaged food items (no glass, please) to Grant Park, 44 W. Golfview Drive in Northlake or the George Leoni Complex, 800 N. 17th Avenue in Melrose Park through December 12. New toys/games can also be dropped at these locations through December 12. Sacred Heart School, 815 N. 16th Avenue in Melrose Park, is collecting canned food and unwrapped toys for Ronald McDonald House in December. Several local municipalities, including the Village of River Grove and the Village of Forest Park, have food pantries and gladly accept donations throughout the year. The Maywood Park District invites community residents to experience the first in its “Bringing Books to LIfe” series as it unveils this year’s theme “Rejected Princesses” by author Jason Porath. Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) high school art students are the creators of the artwork for this special event set for Monday, December 4 at 4 pm at Burton Park, 1616 Washington in Maywood. An area of Burton Park has now been dedicated “Storybook Park,” which will continue to feature art exhibits from Districts 89, 209, PAEC and other organizations throughout the year. The book tells the tales of 100 of history’s boldest heroines, hellions and heretics. Dawn Rone, Maywood Park District President, Kathleen Maltese, Visual Arts Instructor at PMSA and Park District Executive Director Lonette Hall, all instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, invite everyone to celebrate the season and applaud these ambitious and talented students. 2000 5th Ave., River Grove • triton.edu Stevenson Middle School 7th Grader Selected To Serve as Triton’s President for a Day Qualities of inspiring role models and leaders was the theme for Triton College’s President for a Day challenge, which brought seventh grade students from District 89 schools to campus for a day of activities last month. Prior to their visit, students participated in an essay contest in which they wrote about leaders whom they admired. Stevenson Middle School (Melrose Park) student Shantiah Watt was selected as the winner, earning her the honor of President for a Day. She chose NASA mathematician and physicist Katherine Johnson as the subject for her essay. “I wrote about Katherine Johnson because she is very similar to me,” Shantiah said. ”She is an African American woman good with Science and Math, and she is a great role model.” The students visited several areas of campus during their visit, including the newly renovated East Campus Greenhouse and the Engineering Technology lab. The group also enjoyed lunch with Triton College President Mary-Rita Moore, during which they discussed qualities that make good leaders and role models, highlighting the subjects of their essays. In the near future, the college plans to include other schools and organizations within Triton’s district. Triton Awarded 300K Grant from DOJ to Increase Student Safety Programs Increased educational programs and training focusing on sexual assault and domestic violence prevention will further ensure the safety of students and community members on Triton College’s campus. Triton was recently awarded a $300,000 grant from the United States Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) to implement the new programs in partnership with the River Grove Police Department and Oak-Park-based Sarah’s Inn, a domestic violence resource center. Grant funds will support the newly formed Triton College Coordinated Community Response Team (TCCRT), which will implement a mandatory sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking prevention program for all incoming Triton students. Increased training will also be offered to River Grove and Triton College law enforcement personnel as well as other campus employees.

Family and togetherness are key themes for the holidays. That can make the holidays awfully difficult for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. “If the grief is fresh, holiday cheer can seem like an affront. Celebrations may underscore how alone people feel,” notes my colleague Dr. Michael Miller in the December issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter. This special theme issue focuses on grief and loss. Although grief is nearly universal, it expresses itself in many different ways, and sometimes resembles major depression. Frequent crying spells, depressed mood, sleep disturbances, and loss of appetite are common during the bereavement process. Grief is not a tidy, orderly process, and there is no right way to grieve. Every person—and every family—does it differently. This can cause emotions to collide and overlap, especially during the holiday season when the emphasis is on rebirth and renewal. Here are the strategies recommended in the Harvard Mental Health Letter that may help you or someone you know who is grieving cope with the holidays: Start a new tradition. During a holiday dinner, place a lighted candle on the dinner table, leave an empty chair, or say a few words of remembrance. Change the celebration. Go out to dinner instead of planning an elaborate meal at home. Or schedule a trip with friends. Express your needs. People who are grieving may find it hard to participate in all the festivities or may need to let go of unsatisfying traditions. It’s all right to tell people you just aren’t up to it right now or to change plans at the last minute. I remember that my sister did not join in singing carols, the holidays after our father died. Help someone else. It may also help to volunteer through a charitable or religious organization. Make a donation to a favorite cause in memory of the person who died. In retrospect, I wish I had done this during that sad holiday. Give yourself time. The grieving process doesn’t neatly conclude at the six-month or one-year mark. Depending on the strength of the bond that was broken, grief can be life-long. Nevertheless, grief does usually soften and change over time. With time, the holidays will become easier to handle. The Harvard Mental Health Letter, written for mental health professionals and all interested readers, presents the latest thinking about howto promote a sense of well-being, and to understand, prevent, and treat mental distress.
