MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR

tina valentino There's nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child. —Erma Bombeck

Few words make you want to leap into action and leave you feeling powerless at the same time. My first instinct when I hear the sound of those two words, “help me,” is to take a quick look around to see if anyone else is coming to assist and, if no one is on the way, well, then it’s time to step up. What exactly does this have to do with Christmas? Maybe nothing. And maybe something. After spending the last month with my mom in a nursing/rehabilitation facility, I’ve heard an elderly person down at the end of a quiet hallway yell out those two words on more than one occasion and it’s gut-wrenching. There were also times when the men and women there never said a word and the feeling in the air was equally desperate. There’s the woman who pounds on the table over and over again; the person who habitually says “hello” to everyone; the man with the Velcro sneakers who proficiently pedals his wheelchair from one unit to the next; the man with the bib who gangsters the remote control in the community area just because; the people who never leave their rooms—all I can see is their feet under the blanket as I pass by—and the few who are parked near the nurse’s station so she can keep a watchful eye. Most have “bed heads” and sad eyes, when they’re not dozing off in the middle of a crowded room. I wondered what they did for a living, if they served in the war, if they had children, if they danced and were silly or were booksmart and had good jobs. The days unfolded like a story that Britt Kennedy wrote for Florida Today in November 2014: No one to share a laugh with at the breakfast table or over a TV show. No hello hugs. No goodnight kisses. No human touch. Not a single visitor to chat with. This is life—simple, stark, and so often, profoundly lonely—for thousands.” With youth on our side, we’re all about our smartphones, earbuds, iWatches and Fitbits, keeping track of our steps and appointments and our playlists, transferring funds, downloading apps and getting directions, messaging friends at the touch of a button; jamming the malls at all hours of the day and night; waiting in line for the hottest trends and the latest fashions to please everyone on our gift lists. In reality, folks, we’re all only a blink of an eye away from being profoundly lonely at Christmastime or any other time. I think there are so many worthy causes at the holidays and throughout the year—from Toys for Tots to Ronald McDonald House and Christmas Cheer to the Salvation Army. So many of these hardworking charitable groups bring smiles to less fortunate children and families but where is the effort to bring a little joy to lonely seniors? In the UK, they are calling on people across the country to pledge their support to tackle loneliness and its devastating impact through a “no one should have no one” campaign. I watched the big fat snowflakes falling down through the windows surrounding the nursing home community room. I love the snow. Until I looked around me and no one seemed to care at all about how wondrous it looked or how it signalled Christmas was coming. And I don’t really blame them for not caring. But we should. “Christmas is a tonic for our souls. It moves us to think of others rather than of ourselves. It directs our thoughts to giving,” said B.C. Forbes. Perhaps it’s time to direct our thoughts a little more to those who have given us so much.

So many organizations rely on people’s generosity during the Christmas season to raise money and awareness. Some just appreciate a donation to the local food pantry. We’ve listed a few ways you can help. Keep in mind that senior citizens need joy, too, so send a little cheer their way.

Great news for Triton Hoops Star

After playing a key role in helping Triton College secure its first national championship in men’s basketball program history, Trojans sophomore point guard Alondes Williams has committed to play for the University of Oklahoma next season. Williams made his commitment to the Sooners and coach Lon Kruger official during a signing ceremony at Triton College in November. Williams, a Milwaukee native, averaged 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during the Trojans’ 2017-2018 championship campaign. “Alondes has started his career off at Triton College in unprecedented fashion,” said Triton men’s basketball head coach Steve Christiansen. “I am delighted to see him earn such an amazing opportunity at a school as prestigious as the University of Oklahoma.” Pictured, left to right, Triton President Mary-Rita Moore, Alondes and Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Dr. Jodi Koslow Martin.

Everyone is invited to Deck the Mounds! Enjoy this holiday event on Thursday, Dec. 6

Mark your calendars for Triton College’s annual #Deckthemounds Holiday Festival of Trees, Thursday, December 6 from 5-7 p.m. #Deckthemounds has become one the most-anticipated events of the holiday season, as Triton’s campus at 2000 Fifth Avenue in River Grove sparkles with beautifully lit and decorated holiday trees adorning our outdoor mounds. Hot chocolate and cookies, holiday movies, a photo booth and other festive activities have brought families from throughout the area back year after year. The event is FREE to attend and all community members are invited to make #Deckthemounds a holiday tradition. Special thanks to all of the organizations, businesses and individuals from within our communities who sponsored trees for this year’s #Deckthemounds Holiday Festival of Trees. All proceeds from sponsorships will support student scholarships through the Triton College Foundation. For more info, call (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3165/3172, or visit http://www.triton.edu/tritontree/.
