I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming but I’m not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel.
“
—from the animated television special “A Charlie Brown Christmas”
Letter To Santa. Even at my age, I’ve been tempted to write down some thoughts and drop it in one of the local red mailboxes marked for delivery to the North Pole. I can only imagine the looks on the faces of people who open these letters, mostly from kids, of course, as they read them aloud to their co-workers. Some are probably funny once you get past the bad spelling and chiseled handwriting. Thanks to the geniuses who oversee our education systems, we no longer have to worry about sending a letter in cursive to Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Some letters are, no doubt, a little greedy—from the kids who are destined to be future politicians: they want one of everything and swear they’ve been good all year. Then, out of the hundreds of thousands of letters written by begging brats that are piled up in post offices and park districts, there is a handful of Hail Mary passes—pleas from children who sat down in a quiet, private place, got a firm grip on a pencil and figured they had nothing to lose by confiding in Kris Kringle. They wish mom wasn’t sick or dad could find a job; they wish kids at school would stop bullying; some even ask just for food, gifts for their siblings and cures for people in their lives who are suffering. Sadly, we live in a time when media and retailers just won’t let up on making Christmas a holiday that is all about spending. Back in the day, shopping started in late November for most of us. Then it was Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Now it’s Thanksgiving Day before the pumpkin pie even makes it to the table. In some stores, holiday displays are going up while kids are still out trick-or-treating. Sale prices are a scam, return policies are equally bogus, waiting in line is a waste of time and fighting over a parking space is just plain ridiculous. No wonder Charlie Brown isn’t happy. I’m not happy either. For many reasons. Christmas is a victim of abuse. Even charitable organizations abuse this sacred event. Billions of toys have been collected, turkeys and hams distributed, meals prepared and yet, much like the abuse of government SNAP benefits, the people and families who are truly in need suffer in silence. I think the greatest travesty of all is that Christmas joy is never showered upon senior citizens, as if they had their fun already and we should focus on the little ones because that’s what makes the holiday so precious and special: just seeing the look on their faces as they open up their toys and bikes and plastic junk that will end up broken and in the garbage can in no time at all. In this issue, we focus on gift-giving that changes lives and lifts up spirits. Men and women who were willing to give their lives for our freedom have to count on donations for their comfort needs, like underwear, socks, gloves and toiletries. Thanks to Berkeley residents Kelly Smock, Bridget Bajkowski and compassionate, generous neighbors, a few people were able to make a colossal difference for the patients of Hines VA Hospital in just a few weeks time. Food pantries need you. Nursing homes and forgotten seniors need you. The heartfelt letters to Santa need you: adopt a letter at www.uspsoperationsanta.com. Or at your church or school. Charlie Brown found his happiness eventually. How? In the real meaning of Christmas.

Making Spirits Bright
ission accomplished! When Berkeley residents and hometown heroes Kelly Smock and her sister, Bridget Bajkowski take on a cause, there’s no stopping this duo. This fall, the two teamed up with Tina Valentino and Neighbors magazine to attempt to surpass the 2016 Neighbors Comfort Needs drive for Hines VA veterans, which resulted in a staggering donation of more than 2,500 packages of t-shirts and underwear and over 500 pairs of socks in addition to other items on the VA Hospital’s wish list. Once again this year, Veterans Park District Executive Director Donna Leoni Peluso was first to step up to the plate and offer drop-off locations at VPD facilities in Melrose Park and Northlake; Firehouse Subs Stone Park owner Sam Stanovich signed on to help; Mayor David Guerin not only offered the Village of River Grove lobby as a drop-off but issued a robo-call to all residents, encouraging

them to participate in this effort to supply local veterans with basic necessities. Diane Lullo-Hendricks and Bright Horizons of Western Springs enlisted the help of her preschool class which made giving a priority during Sock-tober—generous children and their families stockpiled more than 500 pairs of socks for the cause. Kelly Smock collected donations on her backyard patio while her sister, Bridget, hauled home the heavy bags she collected from co-workers after her nursing shifts at Loyola. The sisters not only boxed the donations but sorted hundreds of items by content and size and, courtesy of St. Domitilla parish in Hillside, dozens of heavy boxes were able to be stored in the convent garage until the delivery date. T-shirts, socks and underwear aside, Smock and Valentino were inundated with monetary donations, through Facebook, clubs and individuals. “Goodwill” continues on page 38

CALL FOR CATERING • NEW EXTENDED HOURS
Just off Chicago’s shoreline during World War II, the U.S. Navy trained more than 15,000 carrier pilots on a pair of coal-fired, side-wheel passenger steamers transformed into “flattops.” Not every pilot landed successfully on the pitching decks of the USS Wolverine and USS Sable and many aircraft plunged into the watery depths. Today, more than 100 WWII aircraft rest at the bottom of the lake. The acclaimed PBS documentary “Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan” tells the story of the recovery of those rare war birds and the ingenious training program that changed the course of the war on the Pacific. The Italian American Veterans Museum, located on the third floor of the Office Center of Casa Italia at 3800 Division Street in Stone Park, will screen the documentary on Dec. 7; doors will open at 2 pm and the film will be screened at 3 pm. Museum Board member Joseph Troiani, a retired Navy commander and consultant for the film, will give a PowerPoint presentation and field questions before the screening. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Seating is extremely limited and reservations are a MUST. Call 708-338-0690 and leave your name, phone and the number of people in your party. 2020 STAND DOWN EVENT IN FRANKLIN PARK
Franklin Park American Legion #974, 9757 Pacific Avenue, will host its 4th annual Stand Down for Homeless Veterans and those in need on January 26, 2020 from 11 am to 3 pm. As in previous events, members will provide bags filled with toiletries, a hot meal and clothing, blankets and other items. There will also be organizations on hand to work with veterans to assist with VA benefits, housing and employment. The Post is currently accepting donations of clothing, blankets, coats, shoes and toiletries. If you have questions about donating or supporting the event, contact Cathy at 847-560-0459.

VILLA SCALABRINI
Named to Best Nursing Home Lists Presence Villa Scalabrini Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Northlake, a skilled nursing community owned by Ascension Living, has named by U.S. News and World Report as one of “America’s Best Short-Stay Rehabilitation Centers.” U.S. News and World Report identified the Best Nursing Homes for 20192020 after evaluating more than 15,000 homes nationwide, in every state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas. Only 19% of those evaluated earned at least one “High Performing” rating. “It is an honor to be nationally recognized by this leading publication,” said Daryce Fields, Executive Director, Villa Scalabrini. “I am grateful for our talented, caring associates, who are driven by a commitment to deliver quality care.” Danny Stricker, president, Ascension Post-Acute Services, added, “This year, Villa Scalabrini Nursing and Rehabilitation Center joins 14 other Ascension Living communities to achieve national recognition. This designation is evidence of our dedication to our mission and to providing personalized care and service to our residents and guests by every member of the Ascension Living team.” In October, Northlake-based Presence Villa Scalabrini Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was among three Ascension Living skilled nursing and rehab centers named to Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes 2020 list. The first-ever list recognizes just over 400 of the best nursing homes across the 20 largest U.S. States: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, George, North Carolina, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, Arizona, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, Maryland and Wisconsin. The designations were based on an analysis of over 15,000 nursing homes in the U.S. The Ascension Living owned and operated skilled nursing and rehab centers awarded the Newsweek honor also include Presence Resurrection Life Center in Chicago and Presence Resurrection Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Park Ridge. The three centers receiving the awards are also currently carrying a 5-star overall rating by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

Established in 1931, Trailside Museum served as the first public nature education facility for the Cook County Forest Preserves. Trailside is set within a historic 1876 mansion and the building has served many purposes through the years, including being a residence and even housing two schools. In 1919, the Forest Preserves purchased the building, having already bought much of the surrounding land. NEIGHBORS MAGAZINE | FIREHOUSE SUBS | VETERANS PARK DISTRICT | VILLAGE OF HILLSIDE continued from page 6
Kelly Smock (at right) and her sister, Bridget Bajkowski stockpiled a massive amount of donations in the convent garage at St. Domitilla parish in Hillside; below, Tom Brimie, President of the Franklin Park-based The Unity in Community, has been impacting lives through fundraisers, food drives, scholarships and benefits since the foundation was launched in 2009; bottom photo, Diane Lullo-Hendricks and her proud and generous preschool class at Bright Horizons in Western Springs as they pose for a picture with the hundreds of socks they collected during Sock-tober this year.
Making Spirits Bright
“This year, my sister Bridget and I got an idea to set out and collect much-needed items for veterans at Hines VA. We only had an idea and needed the community to join our efforts if we wanted it to be successful. We are speechless at the support we received from residents, local businesses, Loyola Hospital and local municipalities. We always believe if you want to see change in the world you have to be a part of it—and to those who were a big part of this, thank you,” said Kelly Smock after tallying up the numbers on the 2019 drive. Nearly $8,000 in items were delivered and the total amount of monetary donations is still being tabulated. Jill Kalkofen-Jacobsen, Voluntary Service Specialist at Hines VA, was truly speechless as the Hillside Public Works crew carried in the steady stream of boxes. “Wow! The kindness and generosity of the community is overwhelming and heartfelt,” she told Neighbors magazine. “Giving a veteran a new, clean sweatsuit or t-shirt when it is needed, giving a veteran toiletries while they are here receiving care and making each veteran’s hospital stay more like home—these are the life-changing things you have accomplished. Thank you to everyone who pitched in, no matter how small or large the donation. You have truly helped our entire hospital, from inpatients, those in the homeless program, women’s program and community living centers with this colossal contribution. Thank you for making every day a Veterans Day.” Not pictured and still to be delivered as this issue goes to press is the substantial collection of items still at the Village of River Grove. Funds raised will be dedicated to specific needs in various areas of the hospital, such as Blind Rehabilitation, Hospice, Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders, Homeless Program and Fisher House. There are countless ways to support local veterans at Hines VA throughout the year. Visit the website at www.hines.va.gov/giving for details on voluntary service and monetary and non-monetary donations used for the comfort and welfare of the veterans. Monetary donations may be dropped off or sent to: Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Voluntary Service (135), 5000 S. 5th Avenue, Hines, IL 60141.
