When wishes are few, the heart is happy. Gautama Buddha

Wishes. Seems like yesterday that I lived for the release of the Sears Wish Book. My aunt

worked for Sears so it’s not like I had to wait for a copy. If I had read textbooks with the same intensity and fervor that I studied that glossy Wish Book, I would have diplomas plastered all over my wall. Page by page, slowly we turned, from toys and bikes to clothes and shoes, dog ear here and dog ear there, crimping the corners for easy access back to favorite pages without navigating the colossal catalog all over again. Despite my fixation with the Wish Book and the fact that my grandfather would make a trek to Santa’s Village in Dundee in the summer months so I could personally deliver the start of my wish list to the man in the red suit as early as possible, not every wish, of course, was granted. I was hardly deprived but we all learn early on that wishing doesn’t make it so. In the more than 2,000 years since the first Christmas, I believe that wishing may have reached an all-time high this year. Clearly, we all wish for the end of COVID-19 and the devastation it continues to wreak on the economy and families. We can all agree on that. But, if I were to write a letter to Santa as a grown-up, there are just some really simple, do-able things on my always-changing list. Maybe it’s more of a gripe list but I wish everyone would just get used to wearing a mask already; I wish everyone would once and for all understand that small businesses are going to close, favorite local storefronts, restaurants, salons, gyms, bakeries, etc. will be boarded up and jobs and lives will be ruined forever if people don’t start patronizing the “little guys” instead of crowding the parking lots at big box stores and malls. I see the cars and the traffic control. I see the Amazon trucks. I know you want what you want but, if there was ever a time to make an exception, isn’t this the time? Small businesses have invested their savings in heaters, partitions, tents, delivery drivers, QR codes and have gone to great lengths to reach the masses. Hear their plea. I wish that state and city politicians would stop dictating public health—about which they know nothing. I wish they wouldn’t encourage people to rat out their neighbors and advise people to call the police for having too many friends and family over, threaten jail time and then dismiss being called out for not practicing what they preach. Morale is at an all-time low, isolation is depressing, anxieties and loneliness are as rampant as positive cases but desolation is not documented. Intelligent adults who can practice social distancing and visit safely should not be punished. Drunken, unmasked fools in bars and on party buses should be punished swiftly and decisively because arrogance and ignorance is the cause of Tier 3 restrictions—not children who desperately miss their parents, not people who want to attend church services or funerals. Despite seven months of extreme hardship, no one is grasping the moral of this pandemic story. I’m not shocked; after over 2,000 years, few have learned the real meaning of Christmas. As I see it, the moral of the pandemic and Christmas is simple: the shepherds in the field, a star in the night, a little boy with only the gift of playing his drum—or the immortal words of Dr. Seuss: “Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” Stay home when possible, stay simple, shop local and give local. Pause for just a minute and reflect on the hungry, grieving, discouraged neighbors around us. Open your hearts—through volunteering, through donating, through prayer. Wishing all a simple and safe Christmas and healthy new year.

IF YOU CAN

We know it’s asking a lot to give at this time when many people are living from paycheck to paycheck— if they’re working at all. But there are local organizations that are hustling to help the less fortunate, providing food and toys and help with utility bills and gifts for forgotten seniors right here in our backyard. If you need suggestions, send an email to mel60160@aol.com. We’re happy to help.

ACCESS TO CARE

virtual Wine Tasting/Auction fundraiser

• Affordable prescriptions ($15-$40) • Fill Rx at a local pharmacy

Access to Care will host a Virtual Holiday Wine Tasting and Auction on Friday, December 11. “During this challenging time in history, we’ve created a safe and fun way to raise support for the critical funding needed to continue the mission of Access to Care,” said Gayle Deja-Schultz, Director of Development for Access to Care. “This unique event allows attendees to support Access to Care, yet socially distance and experience a wonderful Wine Tasting and cheese pairing with an expert Wine Vintner, amazing Silent Auction, and much more.” With the ever-changing climate in health care, event participation is even more critical to our ability to continue to serve those in need. Support sends immediate aid to lowincome, uninsured, and under-insured resid ents. Proceeds from this fundraiser will allow for these individuals to be assigned to a primary care physician near their home where they will receive unlimited, low-cost office visits, diagnostic lab and radiology tests, prescription medication and mental health care. For ticket availability and opportunities to support Access to Care, visit accesstocare.org. For more information or to become and event sponsor, please contact Gayle Deja-Schultz, Director of Development, at gayled@accesstocare.org, 708-531-0680, x225.

The college won the “Future of Industry” Award which honors a school or organization that has created a successful and sustainable summer manufacturing camp program. Triton was nominated fo r the award for producing two science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) summer camps for girls that introduce engineering technology educational concepts and hands-on skills used in the manufacturing industry. “It is an honor to be considered a trailblazer in helping meet the future talent needs of manufacturing. As a part of our commitment to closing the industrial skills gap, we will continue to be a part of teaching the next generation of manufacturing professionals and introducing them to available career tracks,” said Jennifer Davidson, Ph.D., dean of Business and Technology. “I am very pleased that our faculty members are being commended for their innovative and educational community programming in the STEM fields.” GADgET, Girls Adventuring in Design, Engineering and Technology, is for participants ages 10-14 to gain hands-on practical experience with engineering tools Supported in part by NBT camp grant funding, created by Triton College Engineering Technology faculty member Antigone Sharris in 2010 and led by Triton College Engineering Technology faculty member Andrea Blaylock, the GADgET Camp has been replicated by other colleges and high schools. ONLINE WELLNESS:

final session date is december 23

If you are an Oak Park or River Forest resident, 55 years of age or older, and are looking for support amid one or more life transitions, then a new online wellness group may be a great fit. Designed to “promote meaningful living into old age” as people share and connect with others, the free group on Zoom began in early November. Each meeting is from 6 to 7: 30 pm, and the final session is Wednesday, December 23. Initiated by graduate students at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, “Meaningful Living” had two prior sessions before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Brenda Ross, an Assistant Professor of Human Services at Concordia who oversees the program, said former group members “have really appreciated the opportunity to share their own life learning with others. They have also been reminded of how their lives continue to be meaningful in so many ways, and they have learned some new skills,” Ross added. If you are an Oak Park or River Forest resident, 55 years of age or older, and are looking for support amid one or more life transitions, then a new online wellness group may be a great fit. Alicia Thomas (at right in the photo), a licen sed mental health therapist and co-facilitator, was part of an original three-person group who conceived the program. Another student from that group, Sheina Dixon (at left in the photo), is also a licensed mental health therapist and co-facilitator. “I saw there is precious little programming for a very critical population,” Thomas continued. “The ‘young old’ to older adults in the 55-to 80-year age gro up are forgotten about too much, even though they experience the most amount of change, with its impact on mental health.” “This is a great collaboration between the Townships and Concordia University, specifically the counseling center,” said River Forest Township Supervisor Carla Sloan. “It provides a practicum for the grad students in counseling. It also provides free mental wellness counseling for seniors age 55-plus. This is a group with unique mental wellness needs that are not often met.” Participation in the “Meaningful Living” sessions is free of charge but space is limited; to reserve your spot, contact co-facilitator Alicia Thomas at (312) 869-2226.
