One Less Coffee. I recently saw on the morning news, in advance of National Bubble Gum Day, that the record for the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble at the same time still hasn’t been broken. In September 2012, 536 nothing-to-do Nintendo game character Kirby fans got together in Seattle to break the previous Guinness World Record of 304 people blowing chewing gum bubbles in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Thank you, WGN, for this useless information. Really? In the midst of freezing temperatures and all of the chaos and suffering in the world, we needed to pay homage to bubble gum. In my wandering mind, all I could think about was how much more effective nearly 1,000 people could have been if they had done something useful together or even on their own. One of the themes for a much more meaningful calendar day, Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Day on February 17, is “Kindness Starts With One.” As I made a conscious effort to include RAK information in this issue, I dug a little deeper into a Facebook post by a friend’s daughter that caught my attention during the holidays. Melrose Park resident Stephanie VazquezHaskins works in downtown Chicago and each day she walks underground where countless homeless people hunker down throughout the year. Finally, on a very cold day, she just couldn’t take it any longer: all those people can’t buy gloves, hats, socks or even stop in somewhere for a hot cup of coffee. “I had to do something. They have nothing,” Stephanie told me when I messaged her for more information. “I started a gofundme page and asked everyone to think about the warmth in their own lives and to consider donating just $5—that’s five toothbrushes to use at a warming center, five pairs of socks, five bars of soap for a shower, five pairs of gloves. I promised everyone that they would see their money go to good use.” She kept her promise...and then some. Donations came in from family, friends and strangers, like me, and before long they were loading four trucks and heading to “tent city” to personally deliver basic necessities to human beings curled up at the rock bottom of our society. Little kids were fascinated by the cookie snacks and one lady, who never panhandled for money, was so grateful for the “blessing bags,” as Stephanie calls them. “For six long hours, we distributed everything we had to everyone we could find. Did it make a difference? We’d like to think so. Once we got back home and sat around my mom’s dinner table, she asked us all to comment on what we got out of the experience. We all took away something different: gratitude, humility, compassion. In the end, all anyone had to give up was one less coffee.” I suggested that she start a Facebook page by that name, One Less Coffee, and within hours the page was launched. I encourage all of you to “like” the page, be inspired and help if you can. Mega-companies like Google and Amazon might donate millions but nothing compares to the exchange between someone who is shivering, someone whose stomach is growling with hunger and someone who leaves the comfort of their own home to personally hand them a coat and some food. It’s sad to me that we have to set aside a day in February to be kind; every day is an opportunity to help a stranger or a friend. I should know. Many thanks to those who come through for me when I need it most.

MAYWOOD’S OWN
John Prine to be inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame
COURAGEOUS
TRITON STUDENTS
Finally, at age 72, former Maywoodian and Proviso High School graduate John Prine will attain the Hall of Fame status. After decades of writing prolific ballads for himself and legendary entertainers such as Johnny Cash, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Miranda Lambert and others, Prine will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the organization’s 50th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in June 2019. “I’m very proud that in my first year as Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) that we are recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time. The 2019 slate of inductees represents diversity and unity across genres and genders, highlighting our dedicated mission to honor music creators who have enriched our lives. These are writers who, in their time, literally transformed music and helped make what’s happening today possible,” said Nile Rodgers. Prine, a two-time Grammy winner, is also a nominee for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Almost 50 years into a remarkable career, Prine has drawn effusive praise from the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and more. With music relevant to any age, Prine’s iconic songs like “Sam Stone,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Paradise,” “Hello in There,” “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” and “In Spite of Ourselves,” have established him as a legendary singer, songwriter and performer worthy of every industry accolade. Prine’s first album featuring new material in 13 years, “The Tree of Forgiveness,” was released last year to overwhelming acclaim. It garnered three nominations at this year’s 61st Grammy Awards including Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song. Despite two bouts with cancer (1998 and 2013), Prine forges on like the mailman he was back in his 20’s. His world tour begins February 27 in Auckland, New Zealand and his inaugural music festival, All The Best, will take place November 11-15 in the Dominican Republic. After traveling and strumming through Sweden, Denmark, Australia, England and throughout the United States, Prine makes a stop at Ravinia on Saturday, June 8 (visit ravinia.org for ticket information). For more information on the renaissance of John Prine’s career, visit the official website at www.johnprine.com for links to his tour dates, playlists, digital downloads, the latest news, online store and details on the festival in Punta Cana.
On November 19, Nadia Campbell, a student in Triton College’s Nuclear Medicine Technology Program, had just finished her clinical assignment shift at Mercy Hospital in Chicago when she saw people running from the emergency room toward the main lobby. A person had been shot in the parking lot and it was uncertain whether the shooter had entered the hospital. Campbell’s first instinct was to run for safety, but something inside her told her to stop. “There were four or five people in wheelchairs in the main lobby so we (Campbell and co-workers) grabbed those people and started putting them in a room that was off to the side of the main lobby,” she recalled. Only a few yards away, Mary McKimmon, a student in Triton’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, had a similar experience. She was also on clinical assignment at Mercy, when she and a co-worker began hearing gunshots. After locking and pushing cabinets in front of the door to her department, she calmly informed hospital staff and a patient in an adjacent room of what was happening. Campbell and McKimmon were recognized for their professionalism and bravery by the Triton College Board of Trustees during its December meeting. “These women are what we hope all health career students will be,” said Dr. Sue Campos, Triton’s dean of Health Careers and Public Service Programs. “I commend them for their efforts, for their bravery and for their quick thinking. They are well on their way to becoming professionals.” Left to right, Dr. Sue Campos, Nadia Campbell and her daughter Kaylee, Mary McKimmon and son Jacob, Triton President Mary-Rita Moore and Board Chairman Mark Stephens.
