Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity. —Albert Einstein

tina valentino

Hugs and Kisses. By the time this issue is printed, the place where I have put my best effort into each issue, my key in the door and my clothes into the laundry will be a memory. For the past three decades, I have hunkered down in the “dugout” on Division Street, cranking out over 200 issues of Neighbors and other “paying” jobs, as I like to call them, at all hours of the day and night. In a classified ad, it might be listed as a few hundred square feet of rental space but, in my heart, it’s more like a million miles of memories. For weeks, I’ve been going through each file cabinet and each drawer to make the move as light and full of “simplicity” as possible. Despite the fact that I have hauled countless heavy duty bags to the dumpster, nearly a dozen boxes of gently-used items to St. Paul Resale Shop and one large storage container of precious Kiddieland memorabilia to the Melrose Park Library, I beg to differ with Einstein: it wasn’t clutter. Every last shred of it had a purpose and overwhelming sentimental value. Sad and surrounded now by barren walls where dozens of photos from pivotal moments in my life have left their mark, I am well aware that things could be much worse. Earthquakes have crumbled the walls of countless homes in Puerto Rico and Turkey and the Australian bushfires forced families to flee as 27 million acres of the country went up in flames. Moving out of my office is hardly catastrophic but, as most people know, uprooting after many years can be quite emotional. After texting a tearful message to a friend, she sent me a link to the website of Netflix star, best-selling author and self-proclaimed organizing expert Marie Kondo, who has incorporated some of her Japanese culture into her decluttering trademark. In short, her KonMari method suggests that, upon assembling the things that have to go, kiss them and thank them for being part of your life, for serving a purpose—and release those things without any guilt. Move on. I took the advice to heart, hugging and kissing everything from old coats and books to old, yellowed postcards and inspiring letters. I beg to differ with Marie Kondo, too: I still feel quite guilty. In Japanese culture, apparently every object has a soul. I’m not convinced that the things I haven’t been able to part with yet—my old Bass Weejuns from college, a heap of Beanie Babies or my picture with NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana—have souls but this back-breaking moving ordeal reminds me of what we all know to be true: at the end of the day, at the end of our lives, they really are just things. You can’t take them with you. Hopefully, the things I’ve donated will find new homes and serve a purpose in someone else’s life. That would be just great. Einstein and I do agree on this—out of difficulty, whether it be closing the door one last time on the humble home-away-from-home workplace that I’ve enjoyed for 30 years or bushfires or earthquakes, there is opportunity. There is work to be done all around us and no time to dwell on stuffed animals and penny loafers. Westchester Food Pantry needs donations, the physically and/or intellectually disabled at Misericordia Heart of Mercy Home need our support, the orphans at Hephzibah need our attention, just to name a few campaigns mentioned in this Valentine issue. Find your opportunities to do more, be more and share some love.

Many people have mixed emotions about the Census but three things are true: 1) Every 10 years the country’s population is taken; 2) Census results are used to determine representation in Congress and how billions of dollars are distributed for hospitals, schools, roads and more; 3) thousands of people will be hired for temporary positions across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count. Anyone interested in applying for Census jobs that offer competitive wages and flexible schedules should visit www.2020census.gov or call 1-800-865-6384, ext. 15.

INSPIRING OTHERS: MAX BROWN CARING, PRAYING AND GIVING

Max Brown, pictured with the piggy bank he emptied and the cash he used to buy pajamas, toys and games for the children who live at Hephzibah Home in Oak Park, where they are no longer exposed to significant, severe and sustained trauma, abuse and/or neglect.

When Max Brown’s grandmother, Melrose Park resident Pam Laino, posted his picture and story on Facebook, the mission of a little six-year old with a huge heart nearly went viral as adults from across Chicagoland and beyond were amazed by Max’s boundless compassion. When he learned that there were children in the world who didn’t have parents or a “home,” Pam and her husband, Joe Laino, tried to carefully explain to Max what it meant to be an orphan. “He was broken-hearted,” said Pam, “and he kept asking what he could do to help them. So we started on a journey.” For the second time in less than a year, Max emptied his piggy bank into the coin counter. His first stop was a place he has visited regularly since he was just a year old: the Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melrose Park to pray for the orphaned children and light candles with special intentions for them. Max and Pam then headed to Target to buy pajamas, toys and games for the children at Hephzibah Home in Oak Park, 946 N. Boulevard (which regularly posts a “wish list” on its website (hephzibahhome.org to assist with caring for traumatized young children’s needs throughout the year). Max personally delivered the packages, bringing joy to the lives of the children (ages 3-12) in Hephzibah’s two group homes. “How blessed are we to have these special little ones to remind us how precious life is and what it means to truly care for others,” reflected Pam Laino. “They teach us the true meaning of love through their innocence.”

WESTCHESTER FOOD PANTRY’S NEW DROP SITES DONATIONS NOW ACCEPTED AT 6 LOCATIONS

Food insecurity is a reality and the Westchester Food Pantry (WFP) now offers six locations where anyone can contribute and help keep the shelves stocked. While generosity peaks at the holiday season, the need continues throughout the year and all donations, no matter how small, are greatly appreciated. According to Denise K. Kouba, WFP Coordinator, the Pantry services clients in seven surrounding towns and unopened, non-perishable food items are always in demand. Soup, canned fruit, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, beans and canned vegetables are among the most-requested but all other items are, of course, very much appreciated. Donation bins are located at the Westchester Village Hall, 10300 Roosevelt Road, the Westchester Park District Community Center at 10201 Bond and the Westchester Park District at 10835 Wakefield Street. Recently, three additional sites were added to make it even more convenient for anyone wishing to support the effort. Donations are now accepted during business hours at the Berkeley Public Library located at 1637 Taft Avenue; the Berkeley Village Hall, 5819 Electric Avenue; and the LaGrange Park Public Library at 555 N. LaGrange Road. For more information on pantry services or donating, visit the website at www.westchesterfoodpantry.org. Do A Little Good continues on page 10

SENIOR TAX RELIEF A program administered by the Cook County Treasurer’s Office assists seniors (at least 65 years old) who are hard-pressed to pay their property taxes, according to Treasurer Maria Pappas. Seniors whose annual household income is $55,000 or less can apply to the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program for loans to cover property tax payments. To apply, download the application from the website: www.cookcountytreasurer.com. Submit the completed application and copies of the required documents to the Treasurer’s Office. Deadline is March 1, 2020. First Installment for Tax Year 2019 is due March 3, 2020. Homeowners must reapply every year.

Don Harmon: New Senate President

After representing the people of Oak Park and the State of Illinois for more than 17 years, Senator Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) looks forward to serving as the 39th Senate President and thanked his colleagues for recognizing his legislative accomplishments and for believing in his ability to lead the chamber. “The Senate is a collection of diverse views and diverse experiences but consistent purpose—to best represent the citizens who send us to the Capitol, to collaborate, to compromise and to create better opportunities, better outcomes and greater faith in the honor and integrity of our state,” President Harmon said. State Senator Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood), a contender for the President’s spot, nominated Harmon. She added, “Don and I have neighboring districts, and we have since 2002,” Lightford said in the speech nominating Harmon. “So we’ve been neighbors in the western suburbs and on the west side of Chicago. We’ve been neighbors in our district offices, Senate offices, we’ve been neighbors here on the Senate floor. I can’t think of anyone else who would do a wonderful job of leading our caucus, and I look forward to working with him in unity.”

Welch kicks off a healthy new year

7th District State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch joined with Trainer Bodybydevo “Devin Davis,” Yoga instructor Gina Harris and health and fitness resource vendors last month at Lindop School, 2400 S. 18th Avenue in Broadview, hoping to give area residents the opportunities and tools they need to make 2020 a healthier year. Pictured, Welch offered a special thanks to Loyola Medical Center for providing health screenings at the New Year New You Health and Wellness event. “Did you know that Loyola operates the school-based health clinic at Proviso East High School? Did you know that the hospital is looking for over 400 employees to hire, including nurses and nurses asisstants?” asked Welch, reminding constituents of Loyola’s key role in the community.

The Orchard family runs the Ice Arena's Pro Shop and is very active at the rink. Fusion held its first Blanket Making Day in January 2014 and then again in November 2014. This started as a way to support Mason and his friends at the hospital and became an annual tradition in his memory. About 40 blankets are made and collected by Fusion each year. 60 YEARS OF SUBS

Celebrating Franklin Park’s Al & Joe’s On February 12, the Gapastione family will celebrate a huge milestone: the 60th anniversary of a Franklin Park landmark and one of Chicago’s Best restaurants. The history of Al & Joe’s Deli began when two best friends from the Italian neighborhood at Halsted and Kedzie, Aldo Conforti and Joseph Gapastione, decided to take a chance and open a small grocery store. Al, an elevator operator, and Joe, a bricklayer, put in long hours working both jobs until the store could prosper enough to support two families. Things changed dramatically, however, when Al was outside the store enjoying a sandwich on the fresh Gonnella bread that was just delivered. A truck driver pulled up and asked if he could get a sandwich made. Always the businessman, Al said, “Sure, why not!” For the next 47 years, the two friends put their heart and soul into the business that was never intended to be a deli—today, Joseph’s son, Joe (Joey G pictured above) and his family carry on the tradition of excellent products and service, treating everyone who comes into the deli like extended family, including Marley Kayden (pictured above) of one of WGN’s most-watched shows, “Chicago’s Best.” Since the Al & Joe’s “Mile High Corned Beef” episode first aired, Joey G has had over 61,000 views, introducing a wider audience to the “corner store.” Open seven days a week, Al & Joe’s offers take-out, delivery, catering, outdoor seating and even slot machines. Recently, Joey G added the Cucina Famiglia dining room next door to the deli, offering traditional Italian appetizers and entrees such as baked clams, fried calamari, soups, pasta, specialty entrees such as Steak Giardiniera, Canadian Salmon and Italian-style Pork Chops, specialty pizza (Margarita, Rustica, Classica and Sicilian), desserts and pasta-chicken-pork that you can make your own way. Patrons also have their choice of sides and wines. For more information about this area favorite, stop in at 10348 Addison Avenue in Franklin Park; call 847-678-6788; visit the website and full menu at www.alandjoes.com. Pictured below, the current exterior of the restaurant (left) and a throwback to the early beginnings when Aldo and Joseph were just getting started.

JO ANN SERPICO: WOMAN OF THE YEAR At Casa Italia’s Golden Anniversary Gala Feb. 8

Casa Italia Stone Park will honor tireless community leader Jo Ann Serpico as Woman of the Year at its Golden Anniversary Gala on Saturday, February 8 at Belvedere Banquets in Elk Grove Village. Jo Ann has been a pillar of the community for decades,” says Casa Chairman Peter Volpe. “We are so lucky to have her as a board member and we’re so honored that she has agreed to be our Woman of the Year.” Jo Ann has been immersed in the activities of the community since birth thanks to the unwavering involvement of her father, Joseph R. Salerno. “My father was a member of every Italian society, club and lodge in the Chicago area,” she recalls. ‘It’s only natural that I followed his example of promoting Italian values and traditions.” Over the decades Jo Ann has served as Elmwood Park Village Trustee, Republican Committeewoman and worked for the Illinois Department of Public Health; in 1990, she became a member of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans and rose through the ranks to become its second woman president. She has served as President since 2010. She is a member, honorary member, officer and past president of numerous organizations, including the Calabresi in America, Maroons Ladies Club and Italian American War Veterans Joseph Gentile Post 2; she has been honored by groups such as the Italian American Police Association, Comboni Missionaries and many elected Cook County officials.
