tina valentino How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon? —Dr. Seuss

Killing time. Sometimes it’s one thing that happens right before an issue goes to press that sets my thoughts in motion. In this case, it’s the fact that a 63-year old Schiller Park woman was killed in a hit-and-run near 25th Avenue and Irving Park Road in the early morning hours on February 25th, probably on her way to work at about 5:30 am. Adding insult to her already life-threatening injury, she was hit a second time moments later by a mini-van. Every month, when we deliver magazines to the businesses on that very corner, I know I will find myself taking a moment of silence for this person that I never knew. The story will take many turns before all is figured out: Were the drivers speeding? Will the drivers face any charges? Did the woman avoid the crosswalk, which is clearly a safer way to navigate an extremely busy intersection so close to the airport and tollway access ramps? How will her friends and family cope with such a senseless loss of an innocent life? I know nothing about the law but I do know that there was an indisputable crime in play here: it’s called Time. And it reminds me of an old Alabama song entitled, I’m In A Hurry. Part of the lyrics are: “I hear a voice that says I’m running behind. I better pick up the pace, it’s a race, and there ain’t no room for someone in second place.” Isn’t that the truth? I hear the same voice in my head every day. Rush to work, can’t be late. Rush at work so you don’t get a poor evaluation. Choke down lunch because you’re on the clock. Change lanes, check messages, make calls all the way home, fly through the yellow light, pick up an extra few minutes, can’t be late for dinner. Rush through dinner and dishes and homework, kill some time watching meaningless TV, get to bed on time to get enough sleep before tomorrow comes and brings the same intense routine, which hopefully doesn’t include a freight train. It may not grab the same headlines as the Coronavirus, but Time—the way the world, our society, our jobs, family demands and even the healthcare system, force us to abuse it—is a true pandemic. Nothing ever runs efficiently so we waste time at the DMV, at doctor appointments and in emergency rooms, standing in line at grocery stores and airports, looking at our watches and smartphones constantly, trying to squander mere minutes for something peaceful, something meaningful in the day. Maybe even a prayer. What can we learn from this woman’s horrible tragedy? We can re-learn at least two things we already knew—that lost time is never found again and, as Jack Kornfield wrote, “The trouble is, you think you have time.” And, as always, this issue features events and people who make time for others, despite any and all the chaos in their own lives—they keep St. Joseph Table traditions alive; they volunteer to make parades happen and communities vibrant; they experiment, like Natale Caputo at Caputo Cheese and create new products; and, in our feature story, we proudly shine the light on employees at Al Piemonte Nissan who, without regard for their own safety, ran to a burning building to try to save lives. They had no rescue training but they were armed with the knowledge that time waits for no one and there is no time like the present to step up. Bravo.

M

ost days at work are fairly uneventful for the employees at Al Piemonte Nissan, 1600 W. North Avenue in Melrose Park. Recognized as “Best of the Best,” one of the best dealerships worldwide for sales and service by Nissan, several members of the Melrose Park staff also displayed their personal best: extraordinary courage and compassion, risking their own lives last month on February 6th. The all-glass showroom gave Nissan’s Tommy Fakhoury a clear view of the intense flames and billowing smoke pouring out of the house at 1826 N. 17th Avenue, directly across the street. Upon

directing his co-workers’ attention to the blaze, he dialed 9-1-1 for help—but the thought that neighbors could be trapped in the residence sent Shane Soto and Adam Kolodziej racing to the scene. “I knew I was going into that house,” explained Shane Soto. “My house burned in 2013—this was personal for me.” Without giving a thought to the danger that could be in front of him, Adam focused all of his strength and energy on kicking down the door on the north side of the home while Shane went south and into the backyard, where he banged on doors and then spotted two dog leashes on the railing. “I yelled out to

Suzanna Garcia that I thought there were two dogs trapped in the house.” Gaining access to the burning building from the south entrance, Shane, backed up by Garcia, got on his knees and began to search for the dogs. In a cage, located not far from the door, there was just one dog. Shane grabbed the entire cage, passed it to Suzanna and all three—Shane, Suzanna and the trembling small white poodle-mix were fortunate to escape without injury. Once the fire was contained by the Melrose Park Fire Department, Oscar Cano took the dog to a local veterinary clinic. Story continues on page 10

In the days following the incident, Melrose Park Fire Department (MPFD) Lieutenant Sebastian Lorenzo explained that the fire started because the family, mourning the loss of a loved one, left a votive candle lit and unattended while they were at work. “Once the candle ignited the drapes and the couch, it got intense and the fire vented itself,” Lorenzo said, adding that firefighters on the way to the scene from the 15th Avenue Fire Station could see the raging fire above the roof and smoke surging from the windows. “What these Nissan employees did was amazingly brave, said Lorenzo, reflecting on the day. “They were driven solely by their compassion for other people, intent on getting them out if they could. They had no training, they had no idea that a fire doubles in size every minute and yet they put themselves in harm’s way. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We searched the premises twice to make sure that no one was in the home and no other pets were left behind. If they didn’t rescue that dog, the odds of it surviving the ordeal were quite low.” The dog was lucky and discharged from the River Forest Animal Hospital and was returned to its owners. The neighbors on both sides of the destroyed home are extremely fortunate as well. Had Tommy Fakhoury not acted as quickly as he did, a tall fence to the south would have certainly obstructed their view of the spreading flames until it was too late and an elderly man living in the home to the north might have faced deadly consequences. Soto said, “You don’t really think at times like that, you just react. I knocked on the neighbor’s door to help protect them, too.” Trained like the MPFD or untrained like the Nissan employees, Lorenzo said it best when he shared an expression that epitomizes firefighters: “Risk a lot to save a lot.”

CAPUTO’S ELEVATED COW CBD-infused crafted fresh mozzarella

Award-winning Caputo Cheese, with a retail store located at 1931 N. 15th Avenue in Melrose Park (and another in Lake Forest), is set to launch Elevated Cow (www.elevatedcow.com), a new brand of CBD-infused crafted fresh mozzarella. The new range of unique cheese is created with 100% organic hemp sourced in the United States, lab tested and verified. “A rigorous amount of research and testing went into developing Elevated Cow and we are excited to provide our customers with a new cheese experience,” said Natale Caputo, President of Caputo Cheese. After positive personal experience with CBD, Natale was on a mission to craft something unique: combining Caputo’s award-winning fresh mozzarella elevated with CBD. After methodical lab tests, Natale put his stamp of approval on the cheese and began working to make CBD fresh mozzarella available to cheese lovers looking for elevated offerings. “I believe in the positive effects of CBD,” continued Natale. “Infusing CBD into my passion of fresh mozzarella just seemed natural.” Cannabidiol is independently lab tested for potency, solvents and for any potential contaminants. Verified CBD is then infused into the cheese making process under the watchful eye of Caputo’s microbiologist staff. Final product is then lab tested a second time for potency accuracy. Each Elevated Cow Fresh Mozzarella production run is specially lot coded for potency and traceability. Elevated Cow is currently available in both wholesale and retail packaging. To reach the Melrose Park store, call 450-0469 or stop in during business hours.

Upcoming Special Events on the Triton Campus STARS seeking volunteers. The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Training Academy and Triton’s Retire and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) are looking for older adults to volunteer for STARS Interview DAy, an instructional program for new police recruits. This interactive program helps the police academy recruits refine their interview and reportwriting skills by practicing with the senior volunteers. Volunteer training is set for Wednesday, March 18, 10 am in the Robert M. Collins Center (R Building) Room R-221 on Triton’s east campus. STARS Interview Day will take place on Thursday, March 26, 11:15 am to 4 pm also in R-221. For more info or to volunteer, call the RSVP office at 456-0300, ext. 3603 or 3835 or send an email to kayfrey@triton.edu. Transfer Center Now Open. Triton hosted the grand opening of its new Transfer Center in Building B, Room B-110 last month. The center was created to be a resource center for Triton students to explore and properly execute the transfer process to four-year colleges and universities. The center houses: Private cubicles for students to meet with college and university admissions representatives; computers for students to create profiles and sign up for online tools such as Transferology; informational viewbooks and brochures from college and university partners; and a viewing area for transfer workshops, university information sessions and events. “We now have a place where students can receive one-on-one guidance, meet with an academic advisor, develop an academic plan,” said Nelly Marcial, director, Transfer Center.

RSVP OFFERS FREE TAX ASSISTANCE Volunteers provided through IRS’s TCE The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of West Suburban Cook and Southern DuPage Counties, sponsored by Triton College in River Grove, is offering the Internal Revenue’s Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), a free program for community members age 60 and older form low-to-moderate income households. Volunteer tax assistors are specially trained to help individuals complete their taxes. The assistance includes helping participants complete federal tax forms 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040 and state income tax forms. All tax returns are submitted electronically once completed. “This is a valuable program that we offer to the community. Each year we help approximately 900 taxpayers who are 60 and older file their state and federal income tax returns electronically for free,” said Kay Frey, RSVP director. “The volunteers can also inform the seniors of tax credits they may qualify for,” she added. Those seeking assistance must make an appointment by calling Triton’s RSVP office at 708-456-0300, ext. 3895, from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. After receiving a scheduled date and time, participants should bring W-2 forms from all employers, Form 1099s (interest statements from banks), a copy of last year’s tax return and any other relevant tax information to the appointment. The program will be offered now through Tuesday, April 14 at various locations throughout the community as follows: Mondays: Melrose Park Public Library Tuesdays: Elmwood Park Senior Center and Eisenhower Library, Harwood Heights Wednesdays: Proviso Township in Hillside Thursdays: Leyden Township’s Westdale Park in Melrose Park Fridays: Senior Assistance Center in Norridge Saturdays: Triton College For more information on Triton’s RSVP and TCE tax assistance or to schedule an appointment, call 456-0300, ext. 3895.
