Grow old with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. —Robert Browning, poet
Golden Years.

More like rusty years, maybe. As another birthday approaches, I find myself doing what many “old” people do—looking back. I used to be able to climb fences. I used to ride my bike so fast that I had to pedal standing up. I used to eat candy from Bonfanti’s store, sfingi fresh from Aunt Nickie’s pan of oil, pizzelles and chocolate chips as fast as my grandmother could make them. Never once did I give calories or cholesterol a thought. I used to watch non-cable television for hours—Bozo, Gilligan’s Island, Garfield Goose, Romberg Rabbit, Charlie’s Angels, Knight Rider—and was never aggravated like I am now by cry-baby commentary and overpaid celebrities and athletes. I used to have mosquito bites that weren’t lethal and scrapes and scabs that never saw a drop of Neosporin; now I have aches, pains, carpal tunnel and heartburn. I’ve had to trade in my sugary Frosted Flakes for Raisin Bran; my white-blonde hair is now white-blonde because so much is grey; the medicine cabinet that I lined with cans of mousse, musk oil and Charlie perfume is now home to Advil, Zantac and lidocaine patches. And my once pretty-awesome wardrobe has been reduced to my menopausal hot flash uniform—white v-neck tee-shirts. What the heck. Gone are the days when I could thread a needle or read a menu without my “cheaters” magnifying eyeglasses or when I could sit on the floor cross-legged and didn’t have to crawl over to the couch or need help getting up. Most of my friends have one bad ear so now it’s always “talk in my good ear.” Most have at least one prescription for something that isn’t working exactly the way it should be and most just aren’t eating enough fiber either. I don’t like it. Not one bit. I’m not thrilled about birthdays where there’s only one candle on the cake because putting 50+ candles is ridiculous or (this I saw online) when you pick up what looks like a really old penny but then you find out it has your birth year stamped on it. Not that anyone picks up pennies anymore. And when I asked a friend’s dad how he was doing, he joked and said he had more friends in Hillside (in the cemeteries) than he had in town these days—except he really wasn’t joking. I read a quote by Lawrence Block, famous American crime writer, that really did make me laugh out loud because it put the perfect spin on birthdays: “As my late mother famously observed, the one thing to be said for growing old is that every year there are a few more things I don’t have to give a rat’s ass about.” Of course, there are good things and an upside, too. I have such a good time when I visit Presence Casa San Carlo Retirement Community in Northlake that I wouldn’t think twice about moving in and enjoying every amenity imaginable and, more importantly, the perks that aren’t written into a lease: compassion, friendship, peace of mind and the lush landscape that the late Rev. Armando Pierini imagined would make a perfect setting for aging mothers and fathers back in the 1940s. It took years of fundraising—my own mother and her young girlfriends were recruited as kitchen help for countless spaghetti dinners, scrubbing pasta pots so big they couldn’t even reach the bottom without a stepstool. By 1951, Villa Scalabrini was a reality; years later, Casa San Carlo would be built next door, for seniors who enjoy the company of others and hate the headaches of home ownership. Inside Casa as well, there are breathtaking sights, including the National Borsato Museum. And there’s a fountain in the lower level foyer which reminds me of something attributed to Sophia Loren: There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will have truly defeated age. Being at Casa also reminds me of an amazing man I interviewed there back in July 2000 on his 101st birthday—Antonio Faustini. He had no secret to his long life except that he lived a “plain life” and he never worried about tomorrow. “Worry kills. Worry blinds you,” he told me. So as another birthday looms on the horizon, I realize that frequently taking two Advil is inevitable but regular doses of Antonio’s advice to be kinder, to enjoy music and to pray might be the best prescriptions for getting older.

Empowering Young Women for 100 Years! One hundred years ago, a group of bold, fearless Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters believed in themselves and in their mission of educating young women with the same opportunities as men. They established an all-girls school now known as Trinity High School. The curriculum for this new school followed their belief in a strong education for women. This included science, engineering and math—what we refer to today as STEM.
“Trinity provided me with the foundation and confidence necessary to succeed professionally. It is unique in its ability to encourage discipline and leadership while also fostering life-long friendships and a sense of community. Trinity will forever remain a part of who I am today.” Margaret Rowley, Trinity Alumna ‘81 Partner, HPM Partners, Chicago
The spirit of those brave, pioneering women continues today. Trinity girls find their voices, stretch their minds, and prepare for college in a rigorous program of study. Trinity’s excellent International Baccalaureate Program, boldly initiated twenty-five years ago when no other local school found it relevant, has been recognized by Newsweek as a standard to emulate. Whether students choose a partial or full IB program, they earn college credit at the top colleges and universities worldwide. Trinity was founded by fearless women, and we continue to encourage our students to find their own pioneering spirit, be fearless, and follow their individual visions for the future.

It’s awesome to be recognized in such a cool way when we are just doing what we love,” said Caputo. The show airs on Sunday nights at 10 pm on WGN-TV and replays at various times during the week on WGN and CLTV. Visit www.chicagosbesttv.com for details on the Caputo episode.

Celebrating achievements around us
25 YEARS OF KINDNESS CELEBRATED North Riverside Neighborhood Services marks milestone
This summer, everyone involved with North Riverside Neighborhood Services was invited to gather in the Scheck Village Commons gym for a milestone event: 25 years of kindness and caring were celebrated and individuals, past and present, were applauded for their efforts to make the world a better place. What started in 1992 under Mayor Richard N. Scheck as an idea that had failed elsewhere has become known around the world for its success in North Riverside as adults, seniors and even children have reached out to others, creating family bonds between neighbors so that no one ever feels alone. Nearly 90 block captains comprise the group that builds bridges between the Village and its residents; though meetings are only held twice each year, Neighborhood Services Coordinator Carol Spale, who has served in that role since the beginning, is in constant contact with new and experienced block captains to keep the lines of communication open. At the meeting, an inspiring slideshow and a special presentation to former Mayor Richard Scheck were among the highlights of the evening. Mayor Hugh Hermanek thanked everyone for their continued commitment and was grateful for all the random acts of genuine kindness and compassion that prove time and time again that North Riverside is a small town with a very big heart.
GOLD Status
District 89 Preschool For All (PFA) programs receive the highest mark possible from ExceleRate, a statewide recognition system
The four Preschool For All (PFA) programs in District 89 at Emerson, Jane Addams, Lincoln and Washington Dual Language Academy recently earned GOLD Status in Illinois ExceleRate! The process has been one of continuous improvement quality planning as the teachers and IA’s engaged in Professional Learning on ECERS (Early Childhood Evaluation Rating training) and continued Curriculum Planning aligned to Illinois Early Learning Standards and best practices in Early Childhood classrooms. The Gold status recognizes programs that meet or go beyond the highest quality goals in three areas: learning environment and teaching quality, administrative standards, and training and education.
MASSA: A WORLD TOUR FINALIST
Only seven teams representing North and South America secured a place in the Grand Finale of the Gelato World Tour which took place in Rimini, Italy last month. With more than 1,500 competitors from five continents, this Tour is the most comprehensive competition in the world—and the Americas gelato “Dream Team” competed against the top 36 gelato flavors from around the world to try to capture the crown. Earning a spot on the Dream Team was the trio of Angelo Lollino, Giuseppe Lollino and Ali Caine Hung of Massa Cafe Italiano (7434 W. North Avenue in Elmwood Park), Vero Coffee & Gelato and Campanella Cremeria. Together they created the flavor “Cocco Sogno,” an indulgent blend of creamy fresh coconut, velvety white chocolate and rich vanilla bean variegated with caramelized almond crunch. While the team didn’t win first place, they did receive the Technical Jury’s Special Mention given out by Luciana Polliotti, honorary president of the Jury and curator of the Gelato Museum Carpigiani. 2000 5th Ave., River Grove • triton.edu Triton Comes through for Hurricane Relief Even though Triton College’s campus is more than a thousand miles from both Houston and Florida, Triton students knew there was something they could do to help victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. And help they did. Members of the Triton College Student Association led a successful hurricane relief supply drive that netted a large haul of bottled water, diapers, cleaning supplies, toiletries and other items. “Triton is a place of compassion and we saw there was devastation, so we did everything in our power to help out,” said Gianna Colella of Melrose Park, a member of the Triton College Student Association. Following the collection drive, Colella joined students and staff in preparing items to be loaded onto a semi-trailer and shipped to some of the hardest hit areas. Triton President Mary-Rita Moore (pictured above at left) was among those who helped pack boxes and shrink wrap them onto pallets. Elk Grove-based Hollander Storage & Moving Co. donated transportation services;the United Way is distributing the collected items to people in need. Local businesses including The Sugar Beet Food Co-op (Oak Park), Costco (Melrose Park), Fresh Thyme Farmers Market (River Forest), Home Depot (Northlake), Gambino’s Fresh Market (Elmwood Park) and Jewel (Melrose Park) donated items to the relief effort. The Triton College Foundation also accepted donations which were used to purchase additional supplies.
