elcome to the 39th Annual Northern Select Sale. Once again the consignors have stepped up from the top of their herds and brought to town great females for you to evaluate. The selection process is always a tough one but made a lot easier with such great genetics, great cattle and great people involved. The animals that are graduates do go out and work for their new owners, just ask the contributors. The Northern Club always steps with their Junior program, offering a 10% discount to Junior members with any purchase, the kids sure do come to find their next project from the elaborate sale and it is so nice to see the tradition continuing over the years for these new herds they are starting and soon to be a possible consignor in the sale down the road. The Northern Select Sale was always the sale of the year dad enjoyed the most because of you the people involved, such good families with good hearts and your commitment to the Angus industry. He would want you to celebrate this year’s sale and also to continue to taking your programs to the next level. In closing, Roger, Bob and I will continue to carry on the Legacy of this event this year as dad would not have it any other way. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any members of sales staff, OBI or the consignors directly or better yet come down to the sale on November 18 in Camrose. Mark Holowaychuk, OBI

SERVICE: A.I. ON APRIL 16 TO SAV TEN SPEED 3022. EXPOSED FROM APRIL 20 TO JUNE 20 TO DTA INTIMIDATOR 17C. One of our top bred heifers; this fancy Pioneer daughter comes from one of our top producing cows that has raised a top selling bull to K Cow Ranch and Lazy HE Ranch, as well as one of the top bulls in the pen this year. 9Z is a cow we are looking to flush in 2018. We think the style and shape are so complete in this heifer with an udder setting down to be perfect like her mothers, that we decided if we were going to sell one it should be one of the best. Also 5D was part of our pen of 3 show heifers this summer we brought out to Lougheed pair taking home prize money.

One of my top picks this is the biggest ribbed stoutest made heifer calf we have, backed by the 14Y cow who has been a no miss cow, every calf of hers has been shown as 18E will be at stockade and farm fair. Her 3/4 sister 3C is pictured and been a top show female of ours. Love our Instinct calves as the are all the top end as well as an Instinct bull calf on our show cow.

Allandale Lady 42D combines the Tiltest and Rito lineages and being out of a first calver. Her great grandam was purchased from Darin Bouchard at his Dispersal Sale. We purchased her dam from Hahn Angus in the 2015 Northern Select edition. With Adaptor and Rainmaker up close in the pedigree, 3E has maternal bred into her bones.

Red Clegg Baroness 9D is a great example on how cattle purchased out of this long running Northern Select Sale work very well. We purchased this heifer’s dam (56B), an embryo transplant daughter of Staunch 64Y as calf in the 2014 sale from Bob Hahn. She has now produced us two excellent heifers. 9D is a long bodied direct daughter of Rambler 1000, we still have a few straws of 1000 in our tank that only get used on our very top females. This heifer has an excellent disposition. Actual weight – April 9/17 – 1080 pounds.

Blackbird 12D is sired by the A.I. calving ease bull Red Andras New Direction R240. This heifer is dark red, moderate framed and easy doing. We wanted to start a Blackbird Cow family in our herd, so purchased her dam as a yearling heifer at Lauron’s annual spring sale. She is bred to the direct son of Knight 640 F, Red Glesbar Knight 4C that we purchased as a calf from the Glesbar dispersal. This bull has met our expectations with his first calf crop. The Calves were all born unassisted, they have good frame. His calves, many from first calves heifers are at the top end of our replacement pens, for both bulls and heifers. Her mother, 4B, continues to impress me as she continues to produce the type of females that catch your eye and will make you want to take her home. Her sire, Peak Dot Enforcer 8A has done a great job on his first set of calves at our place. They are long and deep sided and just have that “look at me” presence about them. When you get in behind Pride you can see all of the natural muscling that she carries and the overall width, while also having eye appeal that can bring home ribbons from the show ring. You don't find many females any more that are direct daughters of BC Lookout himself. This ET daughter out of our AFA 356R donor cow is one that for sure will catch your eye. This sweet heart of a heifer is as quiet as they come with a great personality. A true junior prospect. It may be a while before you see another BC Lookout female for sale, so make sure you stop and take a look at this one. Watch for her this fall on the show road with us, our youngest is taking her out to the junior shows.

HRH 90E is from our first set of calves from our newest Red herdsire Red Towaw Zeppelin 499B. What a great uniform set he left us. They are very thick and hairy, yet feminine females and 90E is no exception having been an eye catcher since day one. She looks great from all angles and has been praised by many visitors this year. We can’t say enough god things about her and she is a very hard one to let go of. Her black-hided mother is moderate framed with a perfect udder and feet to match. She was purchased from Howe’s fall female sale a few years ago. There is some nice outcross genetics in this girl. Kyle is proud of this “Black Ink” heifer calf, she is another March born powerful heifer calf. She is the first progeny from the Anchor 1 Who’s That 9C to be offered for sale. His calves are proving to be uniform, smooth made with lots of performance. Black Ink 4A is nothing short of exceptional, she is feminine, super uddered, big-footed in a brood cow package. The Belvin Georgina 126W that shows up in the pedigree was a Masterpiece graduate. Black Ink 8E is a heifer with tons of potential to raise some herd building progeny. The spring of 2016 we were fortunate to tour the herd of Jason and Jenny Bedwell of Lloydminster, in two short hours our families became instant friends and their small herd of exceptional Black Angus cows became the foundation of KC Stock Farm’s Black Angus herd. Jenny’s keen eye had built a herd of strong maternal cornerstone cows rooted in heritage from Happyvale Angus and mated to outstanding sires from SAV, Belvin and Remitall. These three females will be the first to sell from this foundation herd. We thank the Bedwell’s for believing in our vision and hope that Jenny’s dream will continue at KC.

SERVICE: A.I. ON MARCH 26 TO HF TIGER 5T (ULTRASOUNDED SAFE) Straight off the top of the replacement pen, this fresh female is a progenitor of the great Crescent Creek Rosebud 115F. The "Rosebud" family name is synonymous with true Angus phenotype, impeccable udders, capacity, stoutness, and efficiency. 232D is no different. Sired by our senior herd sire Fortress, and out of one of our bests, 32Y - the guess work is out of the equation for this up and coming factory. Sells confirmed with the early mating to the 'Original Tiger'- a cross we feel will be very complimentary.

It is no coincidence 32Y (pictured) produced the top heifer in both our 2016 and 2017 calf crop. The heritability and genetic power of the Rosebud family is second to none. Rosebud 32Y will enter our transplant program in the spring of 2018, and we eagerly anticipate the large impact she will indeed have. 332E in her own right is a correct, wide topped, long spined female with great hair and a wicked hind leg. Sired by our 2016 feature bull, Willis, the pedigree of this female combines the great Rosebud tribe with the immortal Kodiak 5R and our leading donor, Lady Blossom 3R. A unique opportunity to acquire proven, predictable genetics.

132E combines the real-world traits of Northline Fortress with the calving ease, docility, and efficiency of the Coneally Thunder progeny. Her dam, 132B (pictured) is one of our top 3 year olds on the farm. 132E is a complete, docile, practical heifer stemming from one of the most prolific cow families across the west. Picture time rolls around pretty early, so be sure to check out this female in the flesh on November 18th in Camrose. PAGE 21

Lady 42E is one of our favorite heifer calves this year and will most likely be marked in a few catalogues come sale day. She is the first daughter of PFFR Convoy 9Z to sell in Canada. We tried Convoy to inject some fresh curve bending genetics into our herd and boy did he get the job done! The calves are eye appealing and so easy doing...the kind that get fat off air! 42E's dam 12C stems from our favorite cowline "Lady." The maternal grand dam 12W is a big time producer/donor and a favorite among visitors. All of her direct daughters are under lock and key. We can't say enough good things about this cow family! If you want a show heifer that will make a top notch cow look no further!

Taboo 53E or "Hairy" as we call her is one we are super excited to bring to town. She may very well be the first Silveiras Mission Nexus 1378 heifer to sell in Canada this fall. I'm not one to follow the beaten path when it comes to choosing bulls for our A.I. program but when we heard all the buzz about Nexus 1378 I knew we had to try him. That was a promotion worthy decision on my part! 53E is a brood cow in the making. She's super soft made and has hair galore...bring your teddy bear to compare if you don't believe us! Her dam 53Z was purchased from Ter-Ron Farms and has been the "little cow that could" in our herd...the kind that you don't take note of till you see the calf she has at side. Knowing 53Z this deal is fresh genetics that will prove themselves down the road.

Lass 203E requires a trip down sale memory lane....back to Red Round-up 2008 when HLR Lass 1T was consigned by Blair's.Ag and sold for $21,000 1/2 interest to Soo Line. Fast forward to the summer of 2013 where our travels took us to Blair's.Ag Hanley pastures. This is where Kylie and I spotted the mother to this heifer; 203A. A jaw dropping moment for us both...finding that good Power Eye heifer and then finding out she was the natural calf to the iconic 1T cow. She is a cow that needs to be seen in the flesh to truly appreciate! All I'm going to say is thank goodness Kevin Blair is so fond of juniors and let us deal on 203A! 203E is super long bodied and o so sweet through her front end. We believe if she can produce anything like her mother there will be a serious return on investment to be had.

SERVICE: EXPOSED FROM MAY 1 TO JULY 25 TO COUNTRY LANE JUST DO IT 8D. DUE EARLY MARCH 2018 (ULTRA SOUNDED SAFE FOR A BULL CALF) Here is an embryo calf from a tremendous flush from our great 184S Donor. This would be a full sibling to Quinn’s Junior project this summer where she was Champion Peewee Bred Heifer at the AJAA show and was a division finalist at showdown in the open division for Riley Pashulka. Another full sibling heifer went to Luke Wenekamp last fall and she went on to be the Champion Bred Heifer and Reserve Female at the Kitscoty 4-H show. 310D is also maternal sibling to our bull, Pedersen Bulldoze 296B that did a terrific job for Clifford Land and Cattle and ourselves. Needless to say, we think an awful lot of this female and sure hate to let her go. We believe in bringing the good ones to town and putting our best foot forward. Latch on to this opportunity. She is moderate in her frame but large in terms of rib shape, top, and future. We will be taking her full sister out this fall as part of our show team. Interesting enough the Lady Ann cow family originated for us right from this very sale with a purchase of 10W from the Great Gord Rattray. We felt her name was fitting of our program and would build with it, it has and she has been a major part of it all. Each year we have had a sibling or descendant of her in our show string. She is the dam to Alpine 241A bull that did a terrific job for HR Hahn and left them with a nice set of calves. She always adds that extra dimension and hip to her offspring. Crossed with the surefooted sire, Vision Unanimous, is sure to create a lot of excitement. We feel this is a match made in heaven and are sure it will create a highly marketable coupon.

Taylor bought this bred's dam at the Northern Sale a few years ago as his first Angus purchase. 9D dam has been a never miss producer and we feel 9 D will follow in her dam's footsteps for her new owner. 9D was ultrasounded SAFE to her AI.

Dedication to
Rob Holowaychuk T
he Northern Select Sale was the sale that Rob Holowaychuk enjoyed the most from day one, 39 years ago. The people involved, the cattle marketed, and the good times at this event were cherished by him. This is where RNH Livestock, and then OBI, got started. He did love to meet you all and took his time at everyone’s farm selecting just the right animals for the sale that year, even if it took a lot of convincing or searching in that next pasture that the consignors didn’t want Rob to see. “Well who is she?” he would say and then another entry would be coming. He knew what the sale needed even before going to the farm. He gathered up the best quality animals every year with his persistence and dedication to this sale with the mind set of making the sale better each year. Of course there were some tough years along the way, but he always was positive that good cattle will bring good value and he made sure they did. This sale was always intended to sell hard working cattle, and a lot of times down the road the Northern Select purchases worked out so well for all the new owners. Dad was so proud of this feat. He would never want the stories to end on how the Northern Select cattle did across the nation. He also was a people person as you all know; he wanted to know everything about the farm, family and your future goals. This quality made him into whom he was, and that is something to say about anyone. Dad was also so proud of the Junior involvement in the sale, from young kids consigning to the sale or the Juniors that came to buy their new 4-H project. He lived for the future of the cattle industry. He was dedicated to the cattle industry as a whole and always put it in front of his personal stuff. The eye the man had for cattle was second to none; as many of you know first hand. The ability he had in sorting cattle was just amazing to all. He stood behind the product he bought sight unseen to the new owners, so confident on which farm needed which bull to fit their program. He travelled a lot, and I mean a lot of miles (can’t even count how many Volkswagens he drove over the years), to find new genetics for all of his customers and loved every minute of it. Finding that new herdsire for his customers was such a satisfying feat for him. He was a proud man, but you wouldn’t hear him boast until he saw the calf crop and how the females would milk a few years later. Again he would say, “Well who is he? Oh right, the son of the herd bull I found you” and he would chuckle to himself. When dad passed away on October 4th, he was doing exactly what he loved to do his entire life - in a pasture with the cattle, studying them, taking pictures and enjoying his life. So everyone smile when you read this. There are not many people in this world that can say they went doing exactly what they loved to do. Mark Holowaychuk Proud Son & Proud Member of OBI
