SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW...

1. INFORMATION: We strive to provide you with useful information to help you with bull selection. In addition to the data in this catalog, current weights and scrotal measurements will be available sale day. 2. CALVING EASE: Our cows and heifers generally calve without problems. We have assisted only 2 heifers in the last 3 years and one of those was a malpresentation. 3. PREWEANING: We started calving 2 to 3 weeks later last year so our bulls are younger than in previous years. To ease the stress of weaning and to ensure our bulls are ready to breed by sale time and we have introduced some creep prior to weaning. 4. RATIONS: Our bulls are started on a ration of silage and chopped alfalfa hay in a TMR (Total Mixed Ration). Mineral and Vitamin fortified 14% pellets are gradually added followed by some rolled barley to meet their energy requirements. A TMR and large pens for adequate exercise keep the bulls healthy and sound. 5. COWHERD: Our cows are not pampered! They graze on swaths and native grass through the winter until calving starts at the end of February. It makes sense to buy bulls from a cowherd that works for a living! 6. EPDs: We believe that EPDs are a useful tool to help evaluate certain traits in our cattle, BUT... Quality cattle are more important than the numbers used to describe them. 7. SALE ELIGIBILITY: Only the best of 150 bulls weaned sell. Each bull must meet our expectations before he earns a spot in the sale. 8. DISPOSITION: We continue to get compliments about the disposition of our bulls from everyone who works with them. We are a family operation and disposition is as important to us as it is to you. 9. Where once again you will have the opportunity to evaluate one of the best, most honest sets of Angus cattle for sale each year. The management practices at Windy Willows never vary from importance put on calving ease. As well maternal traits and instincts are certainly monitored; this being the basis of a very sound cow herd. The constant search for herdsires is relentless as one will see throughout that catalogue. Bulls represented are SAV International 2020, Titlest 1145, Tour Of Duty 177, Boomer and the ever poplar resident herdsire KG Focal Point. In the Red division once again sees Red Rock Provincial; his sons have been well received. This year the opportunity to purchase a larger set of open heifers in years. The offering is deep and follows some great well established cow families. Buying bulls from good folks and a good program is something we all strive for. Windy Willows go above and beyond with service for their customers, this not always found at many places. Once again the bulls are performance tested and developed with you in mind. As well the bulls have been carcass evaluated so that you may use this information for evaluating your prospective purchases. Carcass Data In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology. ULTRASOUND CARCASS MEASUREMENTS Rib Fat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and13th Reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3, & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 1000lb carcass would have 600lbs of lean muscle and 400lbs of bone and fat. Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat will lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield. Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal. Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield. Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/ Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in “%”, it is used to determine the quality grade of the carcass. As %IMF increases so does juiciness, flavor, and tenderness, all factors affecting eating quality.

USING ULTRASOUND DATA TO SELECT BULLS 1. Fat levels, including marbling, will normally be higher in steers than in similarly fed bulls due to the lack of testosterone. 2. Carcass traits such as ribeye area (REA) and marbling (%IMF) are highly heritable, therefore using sires with high ultrasound scores for these traits will significantly improve carcass quality. 3. Significant premiums are being paid by packers for carcasses that meet high quality grade and yield grade standards. There are extra profits to be made! 4. Less backfat is not always better! Extremely low backfat bulls may sire steers with high yield grades, but they may be slow to finish. Their heifer counterparts may reach puberty later and have more difficulty milking, rebreeding and maintaining a short calving interval. On the other hand, overfat bulls may have reduced fertility. 5. Evaluate your cowherd, decide what kind of progeny you wish to produce and choose bulls with the ultrasound data to match your needs. WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN! Windy Willows Farms have been performance testing our herd on the Canadian Angus Performance Program (CAP) since its inception.. We use the information within our own herd and we pride ourselves in providing useful performance information to you so that you can use it to help select the bull or bulls that best suit your operation. We do understand, however, that all these numbers can be mind boggling. This page will try to make some sense of the performance information that is provided in this catalog so that you may use it more effectively. GROWTH TRAITS Birth Weight (BW) – the actual weight of the calf taken within 24 hours of birth, not a guess and not a taped estimate. Calving Ease (CE) – describes the type of birth. Codes used are: U – unassisted, E – easy pull, H – hard pull, M – malpresentation and S – surgical. Age of Dam (AOD) – age of dam at time of calving. Two year olds, 3 year olds and very old cows tend to have lighter calves at birth. Weaning Weight (WW) or (Adjusted 205 Day Wt) - the weight taken at weaning and adjusted to 205 days of age, also adjusted for the age of dam. Weaning Index or Adjusted 205 Day Index – a means of comparing an individual bull’s weaning weight to the average weaning weight of his group. Weaning weights and indexes are only comparable within the herd of origin, not between herds. Yearling Weight (YW) – the weight taken at end of test and adjusted to 365 days of age. Average Daily Gain (ADG) – the average daily gain while on 112 day gain test. The gain test begins after a 28 day adjustment period to allow bulls from the 4 different herds to adapt to a common environment at the feedlot. ADG Index – a means of comparing an individual bull’s ADG to the average of his group. It is expressed as a percentage of the group ADG. Weight Per Day of Age (WPDA) – the weight of a bull at end of test divided by his age in days. WPDA Index - a means of relating an individual bull’s WPDA to the average of his group. It is expressed as a percentage of the group WPDA. What is an EPD? (Expected Progeny Difference) – An EPD is a measure of differences in a trait that will be expected from progeny of different sires. EPDs are expressed in pounds plus (+) or minus (-) a zero standard. Why are EPDs valuable as a selection tool? – EPDs can be used to compare bulls in different herds within the same breed. They are based on an individual’s performance as well as that of his relatives and progeny. They factor out the management and environmental differences that may exist between herds. Accuracy (Acc) – the more information that is used to calculate an EPD, the more reliable it is. Accuracies are expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The closer the accuracy is to 1, the greater the probability that the EPD will not change with the addition of more information. BW EPD - the difference in birth weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a BW EPD of 0. It is a much more accurate indication of expected progeny birth weight than the bull’s own BW. All the Black bulls designated as Calving Ease in this catalog have BW EPDs of +3.0 or less. Black bulls designated as Calving Ease Elite have BW EPDs below +1.0. WW EPD – the difference in weaning weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a WW EPD of 0. Bulls with higher WW EPDs will sire heavier calves at weaning.

YW EPD – the difference in yearling weight you would expect between a bull’s calves and calves from a bull with a YW EPD of 0. Bulls with higher YW EPDs will sire heavier calves at yearling age. MILK EPD – the difference in weaning weight attributable to milking ability you would expect from a bull’s daughters’ progeny and progeny of daughters of a bull with a MILK EPD of 0. Bulls with higher MILK EPDs will sire daughters that will have heavier calves at weaning due to their milking ability. Average EPD - It is helpful to know the average EPD for all calves born in 2016. BW WW YW MILK 2016 Black average +2.1 +45 +80 +21 2016 Red average -0.4 +53 +78 +21 It is important to note that Black and Red EPDs cannot be directly compared. Percentile – a ranking of a bull within the population by percentage. It is helpful to know where a bull ranks in the population for a particular trait.

BULL WARRANTY We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. Calving Ease & Calving Ease Elite Bulls In order to assist you in your selections, we have designated some of the bulls as Calving Ease or Calving Ease Elite based primarily on their BW EPD. Calving Ease: These bulls generally have BW EPDs below the breed average, +2.1 for Black bulls and 0 for Red bulls Calving Ease Elite: These bulls generally have BW EPDs below +1 for Black bulls and below -1 for Red bulls. Most of these bulls represent at least two generations of calving ease sires. These designations are general guidelines and only you can decide which bulls are appropriate for your situation. ust when you think you have seen it all Mother Nature throws another unexpected curve at us! We had one of the wettest Octobers on record and then a November which finally allowed us to finish harvest. Despite some cold weather in December and January our cows grazed swaths at the ranch until February and once at home most are still swath grazing. Our bulls on offer this year are headlined by some outstanding sons of Unanimous, International, Titlest and Tour of Duty. We have another great set of bulls by KG Focal Point 2013 who sired our high selling sire group last year as well as our high selling heifer. We have another good set of red bulls by Provincial, brothers to our high sellers in past years, that will help you wean more pounds of calves from your cows. The heifers are taken from the heart of our replacement pen and any of them would be welcome replacements in our own herd, but – we can’t keep them all! Our feature black heifer is the spittin’ image of last year’s high seller by Focal Point. Hillary is offering two feature red heifers that you will want to take careful note of, they are top cut for sure! Unlimited is an exceptional herdsire prospect. He showed unusual growth from an early age and was the heaviest 205 Day Weight calf in his calf crop. He has since developed into a deep sided, muscular bull with an awesome hair coat. He has that herd bull look, and has a proud presence about him that makes him easy to find in the pen. He has plenty of scrotal development for a young bull and most notably one of the quietest bulls we have raised this year. His dam is an own daughter of Leachman Right Time out of Jackie 12L, the Elite Dam donor cow we purchased from Shane Castle in his cow herd dispersal. If we made a mistake in our 2015 breeding program it was not using more Unanimous. Unbroken was one of the calves we watched all last summer as he always showed lots of potential. His dam is a herd bull producer having produced herd sires for Corrie Richardson and the Yuke family among others. A maternal brother to Euthalla 51T was Windy Willows Alliance 36S, a bull who left outstanding daughters at Northern View Angus.

BLACK ANGUS TWO YEAR OLDS We decided to keep some of our younger yearlings from last year that were not mature enough to sell as yearlings and offer them this year as two year olds. These bulls were fed our silage ration until mid summer and then ran on native grass and stubble until early December when they were brought in and placed on a silage and alfalfa ration to prepare them for the sale. They have been developed with longevity in mind and will be ready to breed more cows under range conditions.

Revenue combines calving ease, thickness and hair with extra length of body and explosive performance. He weaned off his mother at 903 lbs at the end of August. He has excellent feet and a quiet disposition. His first calves have arrived and they look great with moderate birth weights, wide tops and plenty of vigor.
