MEETING DAIRYMEN’S NEEDS

UK Fertility Index is calculated using 6 management traits – Calving Interval, Non-Return Rate, Body Condition Score, Milk Yield around Insemination, Days from Calving to Insemination & Number of inseminations to pregnancy
•
A 1% increase in FI indicates 0.6 fewer days open, e.g daughters of a bull with a 10.5 FI will get in calf, on average, 8 days quicker than a bull with an FI of -3.
WWS recognises that dairymen use different criteria to select service sires, based on their own economic and breeding philosophy goals. WWS has created designations to help farmers refine their selection of bulls from the WWS’ portfolio to best meet their breeding objectives. Look for the following logos to indicate bulls that best suit these breeding objectives.

Sire Conception Rate is the North American industry standard for evaluating sire fertility based on hundreds of thousands of inseminations

LIFESPAN •
It is a prediction of involuntary culling for any reason – i.e. a measure of the ability to survive
•
Allows for the selection of animals with a longer herd life
•
Long-lived cows are more fertile – poor fertility is the major reason cows leave the herd
•
Is calculated from real daughter survival data where possible, & from F&L, Udder Composite, SCC and family information in young bulls
•
Expressed in days, i.e. daughters of a bull with a lifespan of 153 days should last half a lactation longer (or milk for 153 days longer) than daughters of a bull at 0 lifespan (on average)
The FertilityPRO® designation identifies sires with semen that will likely improve pregnancy rates. This designation is assigned by examining industry service sire conception rate values, along with intensive in-house semen quality evaluations.
GForce™ indicates sires with elite genetic evaluations based on a combination of traditional pedigree data and genomic data, but does not contain actual daughter data. This combination of data increases the reliability of a young sire’s genetic prediction prior to the availability of actual daughter data.
CALVING EASE •
UK Calving Ease is expressed as percent easy calvings around a breed average of 0
•
Attention should also be paid to Maternal Calving Ease as long term selection for DCE without any regard to MCE could store up problems for the future
•
US Sire Calving Ease is expressed as % difficult calvings, with the average score being 2.2%
•
For genomic bulls with no actual calvings in the UK the US figure gives a good indication of what to expect as it is generally based on actual observations
The GForce+™ lineup includes genomic young sires with selection on rigid semen quality standards and their high-ranking Sire Conception Rate (SCR) from progeny test semen usage. GForce+ sires must have outstanding genetic merit, a highly reliable sire stack and actual calving ease observations.
SOMATIC CELL •
SCC evaluations have been used successfully for many years to breed lower cell counts in dairy cattle

SCC is expressed as a percentage, with every 1% increase in a bulls SCC evaluation predicting a 1% change in his daughter’s cell count
•
Negative scores are desirable
