Family Readiness Group Flash 31 March - 6 April 2014 DoDEA joins the Department of Defense and the military community in celebrating April as the Month of the Military Child. Throughout the month, DoDEA will encourage schools to plan events that recognize and show appreciation for our military children. We know that military children face many challenges that are unique to their situation, such as having a parent deployed for extended periods of time and moving frequently. Deployments and family separations can be stressful times for children. DoDEA schools are part of the wide community support network available to families. Teachers, counselors, and psychologists guide honest and open discussions with students to help with easier transitions and adjustments, connected with military children. Our most important contribution is to remain focused on the educational mission and provide a stable environment for the children in our schools especially during these times of stress. This year, we’re inviting everyone to “Purple Up!” which is an annual campaign created four years ago by Operation Military Kids (OMK). OMK is an organization dedicated to military children. During the month of April they encourage community awareness and support of military children. OMK also asks the nation to join together for an event they call, “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and wear purple on a designated day in April. We are encouraging everyone across the DoDEA school system to wear purple on, April 30th as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. OMK chose purple because it is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. PURPLE UP! FOR MOST DODEA SCHOOLS WILL BE APRIL 30TH. CONFIRM THE DATE WITH YOUR SCHOOL. Military Kids Connect (MKC) militarykidsconnect.t2.health.mil/ MKC is an online community of military children (ages 6-17 yr old), and offers informative activities, fun games, helpful videos, and interesting user surveys that can guild and reinforce understanding, resilience, and coping skills in military children and their peer. Family Readiness Group Flash 31 March - 6 April 2014 Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Scientists do not know yet exactly what causes these differences for most people with ASD. However, some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition. There are multiple causes of ASD, although most are not yet known. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but they may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less. A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder. ASD begins before the age of 3 and last throughout a person's life, although symptoms may improve over time. Some children with ASD show hints of future problems within the first few months of life. In others, symptoms may not show up until 24 months or later. Some children with an ASD seem to develop normally until around 18 to 24 months of age and then they stop gaining new skills, or they lose the skills they once had. Studies have shown that one third to half of parents of children with an ASD noticed a problem before their child’s first birthday, and nearly 80%–90% saw problems by 24 months of age. It is important to note that some people without ASD might also have some of these symptoms; however, for people with ASD, the impairments make life very challenging. Possible "Red Flags" A person with ASD might: •Not respond to their name by 12 months of age •Not point at objects to show interest (point at an airplane flying over) by 14 months •Not play "pretend" games (pretend to "feed" a doll) by 18 months •Avoid eye contact and want to be alone •Have trouble understanding other people's feelings or talking about their own feelings •Have delayed speech and language skills •Repeat words or phrases over and over (echolalia) •Give unrelated answers to questions •Get upset by minor changes •Have obsessive interests •Flap their hands, rock their body, or spin in circles •Have unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look, or feel •Flaps hands, rocks body, or spins self in circles Children develop at their own pace, so it can be difficult to tell exactly when a child will learn a particular skill. But, there are age-specific developmental milestones used to measure a child’s social and emotional progress in the first few years of life. To learn more about developmental milestones, visit "Learn the Signs. Act Early," a campaign designed by CDC and a coalition of partners to teach parents, health care professionals, and child care providers about early childhood development, including possible "red flags" for autism spectrum disorders.
