NATURAL BEAUTY
Melanie Ichigo Sugiura Thesis 1 . Fall 2011 Jane M. Pirone
Natural Natural Beauty... how would you define that word? Would you take it as more a “natural” point of view or “beauty” point of view? How do males think of the word “Natural Beauty” differently from females? My thesis project will be based on a book called “The World Changing” where this book is like an encyclopedia about so many topics. My book will be based on the format of this book, and to create a book based on how “Natural Beauty” can help in our daily lives. I would include certain plants or flowers and explain each one of them, and explain how it can help your health or beauty, so guys can look at it as a health guide but girls can look at as a beauty guide. This book will also include on the information I got form my survey and to explain how “natural beauty” is defined and how people think about it.
Concept
Beauty
something that doesn’t require anything and just your TRUE self
My target audiences are concentrated more on “students” in schools. I chose them as my target because our lifestyle patterns are very unstable and that ruins our health especially and then it comes to our beauty, which includes, skin trouble the most. Overall this project also can be a target for anyone, since it’s a very open theme and what we all need in our daily lives. When you hear the word “Natural Beauty” everyone just assumes that word only goes for females, but NOPE, it’s also something that a male can answer and think about as well. My point is to bring and let anyone participate in this topic
Popplet
MIND MAPPING & IDEAS
I started off with 20 ideas, and then ended up with 3 ideas, and then one, which became “Natural Beauty” 2 ideas I had before picking “Natural Beauty” as my main theme was one, Flower two, Cigarettes. I realized how those two can actually become part of my main topic “Natural Beauty” after doing my Popplet (Mind Mapping)
Mini Project #1: Survey
I created two surveys. One for Femal and the other for Male. Since there are some specific questions you can’t really ask the Male’s so i had to split the survey into two. I had 48 Females and 24 Males that did my survey.
Result
The results i ended up with the survey was that females and males has very different opinions in “Natural beauty” but i did also get similar answers as well from both genders. The interesting information i got was probably how everyone defines “Natural Beauty” some people gave me answers based on “nature” but some people also gave me the basic answer based on “beauty.” For Male i got some answers that i wasn’t really expecting them to give me which were a lot more detailed then females. I though this survey explains very well how this topic can be for both genders but they take it in different ways and thoughts about it.

Mini Project #2: Making my own face mask
Created several types of masks that i have researched online and created with natural things, or things you have in the kitchen in your daily life.
The Results i ended up with the face mask I created was that using natural products can actually help your skin very well. I especially like the honey and milk face mask. In the beginning it did feel a little awkward because it kept dripping to my mouth and of course it is edible and tasted so sweet that it just didn’t feel right tatsing, “the mask but overall after putting it on for 10 minutes, my face became very soft and was moisturized that it was glowing. The other face mask were the same, its just the honey and milk was the most successful one for my skin.

Mini Project #3: Re-designing “Algaeron”
I re-designed the logo for “Algaeron” which is a brand that uses natural seaweed product and it’s manifesto of the business is based on “Natural Beauty.” But they’re logo and design does not fit well with the concept of their brand so I wanted to re-design and make it look more “natural” and not to forget about “beauty” which they have in their design.
Result
The results with redesinging the brand logo for “Algaeron” was i think in a way successful it can be a little bit more “natural” looking but adding a more soft tone of color and all it gives the feeling of “naturalness” and plus also the feeling of “beauty” by using the the pastel color, keeping it to look “pretty.” The original look doesn’t give a good explanation of “natural beauty” especailly with they’re 8 manifesto they have based on Natural Beauty. So creating something that can relate to the manifesto i think can help the logo and branding of this company.

Mini Project #4: Observing “The Body Shop”
I went to go observe at a natural beauty shop, which I went to “The Body Shop” I went into the store and just observed on what they have that makes they’re product “Natural Beauty.” I only over heard some questions that customers have asked and what the staff there would recommend. Also I observed on how they present they’re ads by showing “natural” and “beauty” together.
The results with observing “The Body Shop” it made me realize that many people actually do really care if the product is “natural” or “organic” a lot. I personally just thought that it was a trand and not really serious about it. But when I was pretending to shop and observ what other people were asking the staff in the store, the question was always about if they’re thing is natural. Body shop does have a whol thing based on using “natural” product but they are also aiming for how they’re thing is natural but also tries to show that the product inside doesn’t always have to be natural inside but it can also be the outside.

Mini Project #4: Observing “The Body Shop”
The Body Shop was handing out a packet abut they’re products and the slogan they had was “Find your skin’s natural match!” which I thought was a perfect match for the topic “Natural Beauty” While I was observing the shop there was a customer that asked “what’s the most popular thing they have and that is “very” natural?” and the staff answered they’re tea tree products is the most natural product they have and the best selling product in they’re store.” Also there was another customer that asked “how natural they’re product is in the store?” the staff actually answered something that I wasn’t expecting she said, “our product isn’t 100% natural, but we inspired by nature. Which, we do feature ingredients such as marula oil and sesame seed oil, which is sourced through the Community Fair Trade program.
