I AM AN ENTHUSIAST FOR GOOD DESIGN. Design is the most important element in effective communication delivery. I love creating designs that evoke an emotional response. In order to create such work one must put care into the details. I am continually inspired by the beauty that surrounds us and believe every moment of every day brings new opportunities to inspire us. It is a joy for me to imagine an idea and make it reality. I look forward to surrounding myself with other creative and imaginative individuals to collaborate and create designs that not only serve a need by the client, but also engage an audience. I invite you to revel in the best of my work while at Point Loma Nazarene University.

CONCEPT During the 2013-2014 academic school year, Point Loma Nazarene University experienced some of the most spectacular sunsets San Diego has ever seen. PLNU happened to be in just the right place, with an oceanfront view. Phases was inspired by the beautiful sunsets and PLNU campus. The book mimics these features of PLNU in a landscape orientation to allow for grandiose photo layout opportunities to showcase the faith, community, academics, and beauty of the students and campus. Every sunset goes through different phases of colors, clouds, and positioning of the sun. Each phase reflects the faith and experiences of students, which is seen through the different colored dividers to separate each section. A handpicked orange cloth was selected for this hardcover book as so to ensure the authenticity of this school year, and to preserve the book’s everlasting memories. This yearbook uses a simple layout structure. The Baskerville and Avenir typefaces are kept consistent throughout the book with clean and minimal type styles. The Phases yearbook captured every memory of this year whether it be a sunset or school event.

CONCEPT The Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM) is known as a place of education and mutual understanding about the common history of the Germans and Europeans over the past 2,000 years. The museum presents history from its early German roots to the present day and strives to give visitors a clear idea of their Germanic and European history, as inhabitants of a region and members of a worldwide civilization. With the most recent addition of a modern architecture exhibition hub, DHM embraced the idea of a re-brand. Transitioning from a baroque style, the new identity is bold and forward thinking and is branded into the displayed exhibition work, making the brand feel to be a part of history. The mark is directly derived from the arc found on the new architecture piece, and the Helvetica Condensed typeface and strict grid reflects German graphic design styles. Advertising for the museum is made boldly by the placement of the logo and a single large exhibition photo as the center focus, immediately sparking viewer interest.

CONCEPT Life Daily is an app that was created for Life Community Church as a way for church members to more easily connect to the church. This app allows users to take notes of Sunday sermons, access daily devotionals, find out more about upcoming church events, send prayer requests, and to give for offering; the home page, and side navigation bar, instantly connects users to these links. This app is designed with the user in mind, so they can easily navigate through the app. The app accomplishes this aim with its simplistic interface. The light Avenir Condensed typeface contrasts beautifully with the Kepler bold italic typeface, used for the LifeDaily word mark. The text is styled into different sizes, weights, and styles to create hierarchy. Minimalistic photography was chosen to not distract the user away from the text. Life Daily will leave users satisfied with their experience, and will have them want to use it daily.

CONCEPT Immersed is a story about a young girl and her father going on an epic adventure by traveling the seven seas to find their way back home after a shipwreck. On this journey, the father and daughter come across a pair of killer whales by the lure of their jellyfish. This illustration was made, for the most part, for my passion for killer whales. I have drawn and taken photos of these magnificent creatures since a very young age, making this animal the reason I fell in love with art and design. The following quote, by Kenneth Brower, exemplifies the reason for my passion for killer whales: “For me, killer whales...seem to shout design louder than terrestrial creatures can murmur it. [He is] all about form and function. His markings are as lovely as any in the animal kingdom. The ovoid of his white eye patch and the lobes of his white, tripartite belly patch make a beautiful geometry. His flukes are the finest sculpture in nature...The killer whale represents a pinnacle of evolution. I enjoy capturing the emotion and personalities of these animals in my photography and illustrative work.

CONCEPT Skyscraper is a study of the use of modular grids, image, and type styles. A single body of text was selected describing what skyscrapers mean to a city. With this text, several dynamic layouts and type styles were created. These distinct designs were created by changing the weight, point size, and type styles, to highlight the most important words and phrases with the Berkeley typeface. In result, these styles created a beautiful hierarchy. As the process continued, several image studies of skyscrapers and city skylines were conducted to find the most powerful image to complement the type and the conveyed message. Upon finding a photo, several more type studies were created until the image and type worked harmoniously.

CONCEPT TED, Technology, Entertainment, and Design, is notoriously known for its keynote TED Talk conversations and speakers. The goal of these talks is to share “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Every year, the TED Prize is awarded to a leader who has a spark for global change. In this brochure, Sylvia Earle is highlighted for her “Mission Blue” movement, which would provide Hope Spots, in the ocean, large enough to save and restore the blue heart of the planet. A brochure was created to exemplify Earle’s “One Wish” with powerful images and a clean layout to make reading fluid. Baskerville and Avenir are harmoniously paired together and organized into five column grid. In result the images are larger than life, making them splash off the page, and the typographic styles immediately immerse the reader into the writing.

CONCEPT GoldenGate Chocolate was founded in San Francisco in 1937, the year the infamous Golden Gate Bridge was completed. This rich chocolate has grown to become the West Coast’s most luxurious chocolate brand, ranging from Belgian truffles to mini chocolate squares filled with caramel, mint, raspberry, or sea salt. GoldenGate Chocolate needed a brand and packaging identity that would distinguish them from any other elegant chocolate brand. Using inspiration from the art deco time period and the Golden Gate Bridge itself, a logo was created to reflect both the era and the infamous landmark. The all caps typeface, Mouse Deco, is very geometric in style and clearly reflects the font style from the time. For creating a unique packaging style, the logo was converted to outlines and repeated to create a decorative patterned motif. This texture was then separated to more clearly communicate information with the use of sharply defined outlines. Following the bold colors of this era, black and gold is luxuriously paired with rich colors to differentiate the types of chocolate. This chocolate will surely be the most luxurious chocolate one will ever taste, and will bring tasters back to this glamorous time period with every bite.

CONCEPT I wanted to design an identity that would truly captivate who I am as a designer and who I am as a person. I wanted to create something not only elegant and quiet, but also something bold and loud. Looking back through my notes I’ve taken through the years, I stumbled across the Gestalt principles. When looking at my name more closely, I realized that closure could be accomplished with the two initials of my first and last name; in result an elegant and simple mark was created to represent my name. My love for sunset photography and my love for the typeface Avenir were paired together with my new mark to create a harmonious logo. My brand is simple and elegant and carries throughout all of my design work.

I GIVE MANY THANKS. My portfolio could have not been done without the encouragement and advice from those who mean most to me. Thank you family for your love, support, guidance, and advice when I needed it most. Mom and Dad, thank you most of all for giving me the opportunity to attend the school of my dreams to pursue my passion in graphic design; I love you both so much. The Mac Pack of 2015 and fellow designers: each of you were a blessing in my life and I’m so grateful to have learned, laughed, and grown with you. Courtney Mayer, you changed my life and taught me to be fearless; your guidance, encouragement for the use of grids, and design expertise was sterling. PLNU Art and Design faculty, thank you for walking with me in my exploration of new mediums and teaching me about the finest of details in art. To my colleagues from Life Community Church and Parron Hall: your insightful ideas have pushed me to become a better thinker and problem solver. All of my PLNU roommates: thank you for the friendships we have and the adventures we had, it truly means so much to me. To the Media Services employees who printed out colored copies for me for free when they weren’t allowed to, you are appreciated. Most importantly, I could not have created my portfolio without Jesus Christ, for He works powerfully in me. I will forever thank Him for His love, guidance, and creation, and will forever glorify His name in all that I do.
