52nd + Market Street West Philadelphia Fa l l 2 0 1 1 | D e s i g n 5
Nearly 35% of adolescents in West Philadelphia are considered obese. In low income areas of Philadelphia, there is a lack of affordable healthy food available as well as general knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle. Our studio proposed a mixed-use program in an area of Philadelphia lacking healthy food access: a grocery store combined with a health clinic.

Three prominent towers designed by Renzo Piano were par tially constructed, and now sit un-used. This project took a manufactured plastic waterwall below and redesigned it in order to allow sunlight and ventilation through the wall. The parameters are set so when t h e s u n a n g l e i s l o w e r, t h e h o l e facing the sun is smaller with a larger surface area, whereas when the sun angle is at its highest, the holes are larger towards the sun for sunlight and ventilation and decreasing the direct gain surface area.
