Nearly 35% of adolescents in West Philadelphia are considered obese. In low income areas of Philadelphia, there is a lack of affordable, healthy food available as well as general knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle. Our studio proposed a mixed-use program in an area of Philadelphia lacking healthy food access: a grocery store combined with a health clinic.

LIBRARY

2nd + Spring Garden; Northern Liberties, Philadelphia; Spring 2012, Design VI Can a singular wall separate the loud community spaces of a library with the individual quiet study spaces? Located near one of Philadelphia’s most used subway stations, Spring Garden, the library sits on the unnamed entrance to Northern Liberties and acts as a messenger of our current multi-media.

EUR TOWER

REGROWTH Cristiforo Colombo & Americana ; EUR district, Rome, Italy ; Fall 2012 ; Design VII

Mussolini’s EUR, or the Esposizione Universale Roma, was chosen in the 1930s as the site for the 1942 world’s fair, which Mussolini planned to open to celebrate twenty years of Fascism. The exhibition never took place because of World War II, yet the architecture and urban planning began according to fascist ideology, the result being a modern, simplified neo-classicism laid on top of orthogonal axes and stately buildings. Three prominent towers designed by Renzo Piano were partially constructed, and now sit un-used. The idea of this project is to bring life back to the EUR through culturally active program and living facades.

The Patch Adams Group of Philadelphia chose 17th and Allegheny to repurpose this 5-acre vacant lot along one of the city’s commercial corridors to put a free health clinic, community garden, and public recreation. Located in one of Philadelphia’s most dangerous neighborhoods, the project has the potential to help clean up the city and decrease crime rates while creating a spot for the community.

URSINUS COLLEGE

ART SCIENCE

M EDIA CENTER Ma i n St r e e t , U rs i nus C ol l ege ; C ol l egev i l l e, PA ; F a l l 2013 ; D es i gn I X Ursinus College is a small, liberal arts college in the suburbs of Philadelphia. They currently lack a visual identity from their primary entrance, the front yard along Main Street. The intent of this semester was to create a cohesive project which scaled from a masterplan of the entire University’s campus, to the proposal and design of a building program which would solve many of the campus’s problems. The Ursinus Art.Science.Media center aims to connect the arts and sciences at Ursinus College while creating a stronger visual identity on the front lawn.

The parameters are set so when the sun angle is lower, the hole facing the sun is smaller with a larger surface area, whereas when the sun angle is at its highest, the holes are larger towards the sun for sunlight and ventilation and decreasing the direct gain surface area.

Our group focused on how technology could enhance the lives for those living below the poverty line, and with that we developed a new technological hearth that will bring families together, rather than separating them.

This year, the program was set on the 1500 block of Ridge Avenue in Francisville, just north of Center City. Similar to many other areas of Philadelphia, This region aims to bring more creative arts and mixed use development. This project sought to create a new architectural language to Ridge, by exposing the light structure to contrast the original heavy brick. This project was chosen among seven students to further in the Stewardson Competition.

ADAPTIVE RE-USE

PASSIVE STRATEGIES

PHOTOVOLTAIC GLASS

The intention of this complex is to make use of all structures and materials already on site. The aesthetic of the complex is to compliment the original rowhomes on the site by contrasting the heavy brick with light steel and accented wood.

The complex uses an abundance of overhanging structures to shade internal spaces from the harsh summer sun, while allowing the sunlight to warm the spaces in the cold of winter.

On the main southern facades, the curtain wall will be glazed with photovoltaic glass to maximize solar energy.

GREEN STREETS

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

COMMUNITY GARDENS

Along the street are vegetated planters which will capture much of the storm water, the overflow will then be directed to above ground cisterns.

Green roofs will capture much of the rainwater, and the overflow will drain into above ground cisterns which will be reused for irrigation as well as gray water throughout the building.

The vacant lots throughout the area will become community gardens to contribute to the Francisville Farmer’s Market as well as local restaurants and residents.
