News baby news...

* Never awake me when you have good news to announce, because with good news nothing presses; but when you have bad news, arouse me immediately, for then there is not an instant to be lost. -Napoleon Bonaparte * News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising. -Lord Northcliffe * Friends are like television. Some are like PBS and always asking for money. Others are like the news, with sad tales to tell every day, some are like that one station with the foreign language; you don’t understand a word of it but you listen and watch. * For most folks, no news is good news; for the press, good news is not news. -Gloria Borger

Wisdom of life...

* Any fool can tell the truth, but it requires a man of some sense to know how to lie well. -Samuel Butler * Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are more pliable. -Mark Twain * The price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side. -James Baldwin * The least of learning is done in the classrooms. -Thomas Merton * Remember that as a teenager you are at the last stage of your life when you will be happy to hear that the phone is for you. -Fran Lebowitz * If you haven’t found something strange during the day, it hasn’t been much of a day. -John A. Wheeler * Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists in choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. -John Kenneth Galbraith * The ability to delude yourself may be an important survival tool. -Jane Wagner

ON MASSIVE FLOODING IN PAKISTAN

> Ousted USDA federal official Shirley Sherrod turned down an offer to return full time to the Department of Agriculture, but said she would continue to speak out about issues of racism and discrimination. ......................................................................................................... > New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that to deny Muslims the right to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site would undermine America’s values and damage its image. “We would feed the false impressions that some Americans have about Muslims. We would hand a valuable propaganda tool to terrorist recruiters, who spread the fallacy that America is at war with Islam.” ......................................................................................................... > President Barack Obama’s stimulus package may have created or saved as many as 3.3 million jobs last quarter and lowered the unemployment rate by as much as 1.8 percentage points, the Congressional Budget Office said. ......................................................................................................... > Massachussetts Attorney General Martha Coakley fired off a letter to Craiglist, calling on the Web site to yank its “adult services” section as state attorneys general nationwide also stepped up the pressure. Coakey said the “harmful role” of the site’s sex ads contrasts “sharply” with its purported community-driven mission. ......................................................................................................... > The Obama administration said that it would appeal a court ruling challenging the legality of President’s rules governing human embryonic stem cell research, as the head of the National Institutes of Health said the decision would most likely force the cancellation of dozens of experiments in diseases ranging from diabetes to Parkinson’s.

> “We cannot talk about starvation yet but I think we can talk about millions of people being hungry,” Maurizio Giuliano, the U.N. humanitarian spokesman. ......................................................................................................... > “An area the size of Italy is still submerged in floodwaters and an estimated one million homes have been destroyed or damaged. Tens of thousands continue to flee their homes for the highlands as flooding still threaten villages with destruction. Disease and malnutrition are the biggest threats to the flood victims and medical attention is hard to come by, as at least 200 hospitals and clinics have been destroyed.” -Islamic Relief ......................................................................................................... > “One piece of good news that we have heard came from Steve Claborne, country director of the Mercy Corps relief organization. He said that donations from overseas, which at first looked fairly meager, are picking up as global concern about Pakistan mounts.” -Newshour NPR ......................................................................................................... > “Climate change with all its severity and unpredictability has become a reality for 170 million Pakistanis. The present situation in Pakistan reconfirms our extreme vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change.” -Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s foreign minister, told the UN General Assembly. ......................................................................................................... > “The flood takes everything leaves nothing to survivors—most places even cell phones do not work. If more help is not brought soon we will face a disaster!” Rafi N. from Chicago-based Zakat Foundation.
