CITY INSIDER SATURDAY 5 NOVEMBER
CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN CONSECUTIVE HOME GAMES. PLAYING IN FRONT OF THE CITY FAMILY IS ALWAYS SOMETHING WE LOOK FORWARD TO AND IT’S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO DO IT TWICE IN THE SPACE OF SEVEN DAYS. The impact of COVID in the last few years has just made it even more special and from a player’s perspective, it’s always nice to be able to keep to our usual routines and sleep in our own beds. Touching on last week, there’s no shying away from the fact that we were disappointed with the way the game ended. The boys were in great touch early and we had some good chances to put the game to bed, but it wasn’t to be. While of course it was a frustrating way to end the night and we felt like we deserved more, the beauty of football is you never have to wait too long for a chance to get back out there and improve. It’ll take a 90 minute performance to get the job done tonight but I’ve loved the signs I’ve seen on the track this week and we’re ready for the challenge. The vibe around AAMI Park has been great over the last couple of weeks and we love seeing you turn up in bigger and better numbers each and every time. The boys have been playing some great football so far this season and the support we get from you in the stands only helps to spur us on. The World Cup break is now fast approaching and with it comes the unknown of encountering something we never have before. As a playing group we’ll enjoy a few days off after next week’s game, but it won’t be long until we’re back on the training pitch ready to do everything we can to get better ahead of the next part of the season. Tonight we‘ll play our last home game for over a month, so make sure you make plenty of noise out there in the stands and we’ll make sure we do everything we can to give you some great memories to think back to over the next few weeks until we return! See you in the stands, C’mon City! Scott Jamieson Melbourne City FC captain

CITY OUT FOR GLORY HUNTING DESPITE DROPPING POINTS FOR THE FIRST TIME OF THE SEASON LAST ROUND, PATRICK KISNORBO’S MEN REMAIN TOP OF THE TABLE AHEAD OF OUR CLASH AGAINST THE GLORY. Last time out Jamie Maclaren’s fifth goal of the season had City ahead early following a penalty won by Marco Tilio, who added his own name to the scoresheet not long after. While these goals from the Socceroos duo put the team in a great position, City wasn’t able to kill off the game and would’ve been disappointed to concede twice in the final 15 minutes as Wellington salvaged a point. Further adding to Kisnorbo’s headaches in those dying stages was a second yellow
card picked up by Thomas Lam, ruling the Finnish defender out for tonight’s clash against Perth. The impending return of Nuno Reis could make things a little easier at the selection table though, while Scott Jamieson also could return to the starting line-up in the role he’d played earlier this season. Perth has scored the second least goals of any team in the competition, but you wouldn’t imagine Kisnorbo and co. will be taking them any lighter as a result.
Glory’s fixture to start the season hasn’t made life any easier for them too, with Saturday marking a fifth consecutive away clash. Most recently they were in action away to Adelaide and would’ve felt a little stiff to go down 2-1 with Giordano Colli on the scoresheet thanks to what could well go down as the goal of the season.

SEASON STATS - PERTH GLORY
AARON MCENEFF The Norther Irish midifelder has been one of the bright light’s in the Glory’s slow start to the season. McEneff has scored twice in his four games with the Glory this season, finding the back of the net from the spot against Newcastle and the winner away to Central Coast a fortnight ago. The crafty midfielder has represented Derry City, Shamrock Rovers and Hear of Midlothian and his first venture outside the British Isles has been positive so far, looking to run the show for the Glory in their engine room.

WHO WILL BE ON THE PLANE TO QATAR? IT’S NOW UNDER THREE WEEKS UNTIL THE SOCCEROOS TAKE ON FRANCE IN THEIR 2022 WORLD CUP OPENER IN QATAR AND THERE IS A FAIR CHANCE THAT THE BOYS IN CITY BLUE COULD FEATURE HEAVILY. A sense of familiarity awaits, with two of the three Group Stage opponents the same as Russia 2018. While the 26-man squad won’t be officially named until next Tuesday, some familiar faces are right in the mix to be included. Mathew Leckie, a key member of the Socceroos squad throughout the last decade, looks set to be off to a third consecutive World Cup after playing every possible minute in Russia and South Brazil. Leckie has begun this A-League Men’s season looking every bit the player that knows what’s at stake, putting in some huge shifts to help City to a strong start to 2022/23. Since joining City, Jamie Maclaren has won three consecutive Golden Boots,
was the Socceroos leading scorer in qualification, plus also scored a penalty in the do-or-die shootout against Peru – so you’d think there not much more he could possibly do.
Derby win a fortnight ago, he held his spot in the starting line-up and was even better last time out. A Player of the Match performance against Wellington saw Tilio win a penalty and also score himself.
Similar to Leckie, Maclaren has done his World Cup chances no harm with a strong start to the new campaign. After just four games he already has five goals to his name, while just one other player in the competition has managed to even hit three.
Despite his age, he’s also shown he can perform on the big stage, scoring against Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics as well as goals in A-League Semi Finals in consecutive seasons.
The final member of the City trio who look most likely to be included is 21-year-old attacker Marco Tilio. Although Tilio’s CV may not have the years of consistent strong form under his belt like the other two, he’s strung together some good performances at just the right time. After

Tilio’s potential selection in the World Cup squad has been a big talking point throughout the early stages of this season and now just a few days out from the final squad being named, tonight provides the perfect opportunity for one last reminder of the quality he possesses.

CITY NEARING WOMENS SEASON OPENER WE’RE GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE NEW A-LEAGUE WOMEN’S SEASON AND RADO VIDOSIC’S SQUAD ISN’T FAR AWAY FROM BEING FINALISED. City will begin its season away to Wellington Phoenix on the 20th of November in what will be our Women’s squads first ever venture across the ditch.
historically hasn’t been seen in the competition.
The addition of Western United to A-League Women’s also means an extended season, which has been welcomed far and wide across the Australian football landscape.
City already had a jump on a lot of other teams around the league with eight players already signed up for 2022/23 after previously signing multiyear deals, including the likes of; skipper Emma Checker, Leah Davidson, Chelsea Blissett and Holly McNamara.
Looking back to last season’s campaign, there were plenty of promising signs and great moments throughout, but ultimately, the season would end in disappointment.
After standout first seasons in City blue, Kaitlyn Torpey, Rhianna Pollicina and Hannah Wilkinson all put pen to paper and will return to the club for 2022/23.
City were a win away of taking out the Premiers Plate before falling agonisingly short of qualifying for the Grand Final, but that pain is set to provide plenty of motivation this season.
The ever-inspirational Melissa Barbieri is also back for a staggering 26th year as a professional, while young guns Caitlin Karic and Sally James are also on the list of re-signings.
A hallmark of City’s squad in the last couple seasons has been its consistency, something that
There’s plenty of new faces too, with Matildas Bryleeh Henry and Karly Roestbakken both signing with City over the
off-season, while New Zealand veteran Katie Bowen was yesterday announced. Bowen’s signing is one of the biggest of the off-season. Her CV boasts 85 international caps, three World Cups and two Olympic appearances, and after spending her club career in the NWSL, she’s now set to play in the A-League Women’s competition for the first time. Current 2022/23 City ALW Squad: Melissa BARBIERI, Chelsea BLISSETT, Katie BOWEN, Emma CHECKER, Naomi CHINNAMA, Leah DAVIDSON, Daniela GALIC, Julia GROSSO, Bryleeh HENRY, Sally JAMES, Caitlin KARIC, Darcey MALONE, Leticia McKENNA, Holly McNAMARA, Rhianna POLLICINA, Karly ROESTBAKKEN, Kaitlyn TORPEY, Tori TUMETH, Hannah WILKINSON.
