Your Melbourne Rebels sit a top the Australian Conference and the Vodafone Super Rugby table after five matches, and are playing an entertaining brand of rugby built on intensity, team work and belief that should make Rebels fans proud of your team. The players made history last week in more ways than one, recording our biggest ever win over the Sharks, while one of our favourite sons, Reece Hodge, overtook Jason Woodward’s record as the Rebels’ leading point-scorer. Tonight’s Good Friday carries additional significance as we host our first ever Buildcorp Super W-Super Rugby double-header, with our Melbourne Rebels Womens XV taking on the ACT Brumbies Women.
Our Rebels Women have had a tough initiation to their Super W campaign, but are showing improvement in leaps and bounds under the guidance of Head Coach, Alana Thomas. We are expecting our biggest crowd for a couple of years tonight which is a great sign that rugby in Melbourne is growing and is very healthy. Looking ahead, our men’s team well enjoy a well-earned rest with next weekend’s bye, before they go again when we return to The Stockade to host the Jaguares on Saturday 14 April. Go Rebels! FEATURE STORY
WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Jason Woodward
What have you been up to since finishing up with the Rebels? Since leaving the Rebels, I played two years for the Hurricanes before moving to the UK where I am currently playing for Gloucester along with James ‘Chibba’ Hanson. Outside of rugby, I’m still pursuing my Aviation qualifications plus Rachael and I are engaged and have a baby girl on the way so life off the field has been quite exciting!
4
What was your most memorable Rebels victory? Our 32-24 win v Brumbies at home in 2014. It was a personal favourite after scoring 27 points, but also a team favourite as we were down 10-3 at half time. It showed the teams character and resilience coming out after half time and playing some of our best rugby against a quality Brumbies side.
Most inspiring team mate? Scott Higginbotham was a great captain to play under. Always lead with his actions rather than his words which I admire in a captain. He was freakishly skilful for such a big man. Maybe less yellow cards though!
Current favourite players? Reece Hodge and Anaru Rangi. Big congrats to Reece on becoming the highest points scorer in the club’s history. Great achievement and I’m sure there will be many more points to follow. Also played a lot of my club rugby in NZ with Ru so I’ve always kept an eye on his career and I’m glad to see he’s going so well.
A final message to Rebels fans? The Melbourne Rebels will always hold a very special place for me. It was where I was given my chance to play Super Rugby. Melbourne was an amazing city to live in – home to some of the most loyal and vocal supporters I have had the privilege to play in front of in one of the most unique stadiums. It’s good to see the club off to such a great start this season under new management and with so many new faces. I have no doubt the city will be right behind the boys every step of the way this season. Good luck in 2018 – me and Chibba will be watching with pride!
Your tip for this weeks game vs. the Hurricanes? For me, I think this game will be won by who ever has the better defence. Both teams have the ability and the players to score tries from anywhere. So it will be a matter of limiting their attack, making 1 on 1 tackles especially in the wider channels where the Canes like to score a lot of their tries, and not letting them back into the game with easy penalties. It’s a game I cannot wait to watch!

MELBOURNE REBELS WOMEN
historic first match at home

Melbourne Rebels Womens Head Coach, Alana Thomas can see things are starting to come together for her young team. Two games into their inaugural season in the Buildcorp Super W competition, Thomas has seen significant improvement from the Rebels in a short space of time, despite opening losses against the Western Force Women and the Queensland Reds Women. The Rebels host the Brumbies Women at AAMI Park on Good Friday with both teams looking to get their first win for the season. “There’s been massive improvement from round one to now,” Thomas said. “The work we have put in is starting to come through even though people may look at the scoreboard and see 60 points (conceded against Queensland on Sunday). “We have made good steps forward and the playing group know that. They can see things are starting to come together.”
“To play on a stadium like AAMI Park is something our players will cherish,” Thomas said. “To play our first home game as a curtain raiser to the men is a great reward for all the players’ hard work and sacrifice. “The most important thing is to be playing in front of family and friends that have supported them along this journey.” The emergence of Jayne Kareroa as leader of the Rebels has been a highlight of the season, with a strong culture being built at the club. “Jayne is a fantastic leader,” Thomas said. “She is quietly spoken but when she speaks everyone listens. “She has been good in driving the off field culture with our leadership group and we are starting to see that transition on field.”
The opportunity to host the Brumbies at The Stockade, the Rebels’ historic first match at home, has the players champing at the bit to perform.
