After 21 days, it’s a warm welcome back to the ‘Stockade’ for all Melbourne Rebels members and fans ahead of tonight’s clash against the Sunwolves. Firstly, congratulations must go to Dave Wessels and the playing group for their fantastic comefrom-behind win against the Brumbies in our last start. To be down 24-5 midway through the contest, yet find a way to win away from home was a fantastic team effort. Although most people will remember Reece Hodge going back and kicking the winning penalty, it was the great period of team play in the second half that resulted in us coming away with a victory in hostile territory. I look forward, as I’m sure you will as well, for the players to continue the momentum into tonight’s game. The positives have kept on coming following the club’s win. Test-capped flanker, Richard Hardwick re-committed to the Melbourne Rebels for a further two years last week, while rising star Jack Maddocks also signed a new two-year contract during the week. The extensions tie both players to the club until the end of 2020, and it speaks volumes to the rugby program and club environment that is building at the Melbourne Rebels. As Richard aims to return to the playing field in the coming weeks, we look forward to seeing Jack continue his brilliant start to his Super Rugby career and put in the performances towards gaining Wallaby selection.
On the international front, It’s an exciting time for the Club, with the announcement of the Wallabies squad for Australia’s upcoming Test series against Ireland next week. And to celebrate the return of Test Rugby to Melbourne, I’d like to invite all fans to the 2018 Melbourne Rebels Weary Dunlop Test Lunch. The event will be held on Thursday 14 June at Palladium at Crown. For more details, including ticket options - please visit www.melbournerebels.com And finally, I’d like to welcome the Sunwolves to AAMI Park for tonight’s game. It’s the first time we’ve had the pleasure of hosting the Club in Melbourne and we hope the travelling players, coaches and officials enjoy the contest in which the two sides will compete for the Ganbatte Trophy. Enjoy the game, in what promises to be a crucial contest against an in-form and hungry Tokyo outfit. Go Rebels! Baden Stephenson CEO Melbourne Rebels
A key component of our Club’s program is to ultimately produce Wallabies at junior or senior level, so we wish all of our players involved the very best in what should be a rewarding and beneficial experience. Our four Junior Wallabies representatives will also kick off their World Cup campaign on May 31 in France.

JACK MADDOCKS
Locked in 2020
Highly-rated Melbourne Rebels young prospect Jack Maddocks has signed a two-year deal, keeping him at the Club until the end of the 2020 season. The 21-year-old back has extended his contract into a third and fourth season in Melbourne, following his debut in 2017. Maddocks now boasts 16 Super Rugby caps and six tries with the Melbourne Rebels, the highlight of these a hat-trick scored against the Sunwolves in Tokyo in March.
4
One of the Rebels and Australian rugby’s brightest prospects, Maddocks has played in all but one Super Rugby match for the Rebels in 2018, predominantly as the starting full back
covering for injured Wallabies full back, Dane Haylett-Petty. Maddocks’ bright season to date continues on from his impressive debut year, that saw him invited as a Development player to the Wallabies’ Spring Tour last November.
He’s highly-regarded within our club and by his teammates because of the way he plays the game; with a lot of love and care for the team. “We are striving to build a world-class environment in Melbourne to be able to support players like Jack to fulfil their dreams of playing Test rugby.”
The Sydney-native said he was happy to continue calling Melbourne home. “I’m really happy to be staying at the Rebels. The development of the rugby program and the environment that we’re creating under Dave (Wessels) made it a really easy decision in the end,” Maddocks said. “We are definitely on the right track to building a long-term, successful club and I can’t wait to be a part of it. “The Wallabies are an ambition of mine, but I know that can only happen if I play good rugby for the Rebels, so I’m looking forward to putting my head down and working hard.” Melbourne Rebels Head Coach, Dave Wessels said Maddocks’ re-signing was another big tick to the Club’s rugby program. “We’re delighted that Jack has chosen to commit his future to our club and wants to continue his development in the environment we are building in Melbourne,” Wessels said. “Jack is a quality person and has played well this year – a real testament to the work he’s put in.

Amanaki Mafi READY TO FACE FAMILIAR FOES
Melbourne Rebels number eight Amanaki Mafi says he is “really excited” to face a number of Japanese internationals when the club takes on the Sunwolves tonight. Having made 19 appearances with Japan’s national side, including selection at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Mafi has enjoyed playing alongside several Sunwolves squad members, who have also represented the ‘Brave Blossoms’. It’s this experience that’s led Mafi to share some of his inside knowledge with coaching staff in an attempt to give the Rebels the edge against an inform Sunwolves outfit. “I have spent the last week with the coaches to try and give more secrets of Japanese strength,” Mafi said. “You know with the Japanese; they change (their style of play) every game. Their ruck game (is strong). I predict this game is going to be a lot of running. “They are going to throw every quick ball they can do. So I’m really excited and I can’t wait to play them.” The Sunwolves enter Friday’s game with two consecutive wins after a comfortable 63-28 win over the Queensland Reds and an impressive 26-23 victory over the Stormers, with strong contributions from Mafi’s Japanese International teammates Shintaro Ishihara, Shota Horrie and Akihito Yamada. Although Mafi will look forward to facing a raft of Japanese Internationals, there is one player in particular that Mafi is most looking forward to taking on. “I (am) looking (forward) to playing against Michael Leitch (however there is) a lot of excitement to face them. You know them well for a long time, they know your strength; they know your weaknesses.”
14
Mafi knows the real focus will be on taking the victory against the Sunwolves, rather than winning his own individual battles. Rugby is a 15 people sport,”I just have to make sure I do my own role,” Mafi said.

REBELS HEAD BACK
To School
Students of St. Kevin’s College received a thrill at recess time when they found their main oval inhabited by the Melbourne Rebels playing squad.. Last week, the playing group took their training session off-site and away from Gosch’s Paddock. The move to St. Kevin’s was one of many times the Rebels will look to integrate with the local rugby community. The College hold a special significance for the Melbourne Rebels, with three of the current playing group having played their rugby at the college.

Teacher in Charge of Rugby at St Kevin’s College, Mr Kevin Culliver, said it was a delight for the school to host the Rebels. “St Kevin’s College is a School of over 2,000 boys and this particular facility for rugby came about in 1932, so…it’s been able to develop slowly but surely over the years,” Mr Culliver said. “We are in fairly close proximity to the Melbourne CBD, so that means that the professional teams often do look for a venue.
because he’s got a little brother still here. “Henry Hutchison attended here for several years before he went to Sydney and relocated there. “Hopefully, (there will be) many more to come!” Melbourne Rebels General Manager – Rugby, Nick Ryan said relocating the venue for Wednesday’s session was part of the Rebels’ long-term commitment to strengthening the ties between the Club and the rugby community.
“The Rebels have got the opportunity to use our facilities this morning, and we’re very pleased to have them here.”
“We’re delighted and very appreciative of St. Kevin’s to host us this morning at their superb facilities. It’s been nice for the playing group to have a bit of a change of scenery,” Ryan said.
Rebels and Test rake, Jordan Uelese, and young centre, Sione Tuipolotu, are Old Boy graduates of St. Kevin’s College, having risen through the ranks of the school’s First XV.
“Taking the team to the community is a big focus so that we can connect and influence with the local community.
Young full back Henry Hutchison also called the Toorak campus ‘home’, before moving to Sydney’s St. Ignatius’ College Riverview, to finish out his secondary schooling. “We’re very fortunate that there are three Rebels boys who attended here as students,” Mr Culliver said.
“We have more plans to take the playing group to these community clubs through the rest of the year. Especially to venues like Fountain Gate Secondary College where we’ve been able to set up a strong rugby program through the support of Rugby Victoria. “We look forward to this being a regular part of the Rebels schedule and the Victorian rugby community.”
“Jordan Uelese is a St Kevin’s boy and we’re very proud that he is also our first Wallaby. “Sione Tuipolotu had a stellar career here in the first XV and is often looked towards to being the ‘star’. I think it’s
