The next of our Great Performers, soprano Christine Brewer, sings exquisite music by Wagner and a selection of her favourites in an Australian exclusive recital. New York quintet Punch Brothers are going to be big. Already earning rave reviews for their blend of pop, folk and bluegrass (with nods to Radiohead and Wilco), the boys were featured on the Hunger Games soundtrack and are currently storming the US summer festivals. Black Arm Band’s dirtsong honours the 20th anniversary of the Mabo ruling with stirring songs from some of Australia’s leading Indigenous musicians. Singer Katie Noonan and guitarist Karin Schaupp were also inspired by Australia (and our neighbours in New Zealand). The entrancing duo perform Songs of the Southern Skies featuring hits by Gotye, the Finn brothers, Nick Cave and other luminaries. An Australian in Paris – Jane Rutter Internationally acclaimed flutist Jane Rutter stars in a semi-autobiographical celebration of French music, from La Belle Époque to the present day. ‘I went to Paris at the age of 18 to study the flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion, two of the instrument’s great luminaries. In many ways it was the making of me,’ says Jane. Listen as she intersperses tales of her own experiences of Paris with those of the artists, writers and musicians who flocked there to form their ‘artistic personalities,’ all the while bringing her artistry to the music of Debussy, Fauré, Piaf and other French favourites. Christine Brewer Storytelling is at the heart of all singing. A song is a one person play and a recital is an evening where a dozen characters unfold a dozen dramas. Christine Brewer is the consummate singing actress – with a double career as operatic star and recitalist, she can command an audience of thousands or just a lucky few with a voice that has been described as ‘a sound like molten gold.’ Christine has inhabited the roles of Isolde and Brünnhilde from Wagner’s epics, which require a voice of hall-filling power, but it is in recital that the nuances and
colour of her opulent voice come to the fore. She has selected a program of works by Wagner, Smith, Arlen and Britten – composers who wrote ecstatically for voice, especially one like hers. By Royal Appointment The Continuo Collective’s Samantha Cohen (theorbo) and Ruth Wilkinson (recorder) invite you on a sojourn to 17th-century France and the magnificent palace of Versailles. Hear the exquisite music François Couperin and Jacques Hotteterre wrote for King Louis XIV’s chamber, tap your toes to the minuet and gavotte, and be touched by the beauty of the French air played on ‘voice flute’ and theorbo.
The Song Company’s Sunken Dreams is a concert in two halves – two unique and contrasting performances that fuse classical and contemporary influences. The Song Company first delves into the heart of Impressionism – Monet’s iconic Waterlilies – using six voices and the liquid sounds of the vibraphone played by Claire Edwardes. Genuine water percussion, including the rare waterphone and submerged gongs, forms the context for a work by Jack Body; his beautifully balanced sequence of lullabies and dreams conceived especially for The Song Company performed alongside Sculthorpe’s Maranoa Lullaby in part two.

Duo Chamber Melange (Ivana Tomaskova, violin & Tamara Smolyar, piano) presents a concert best encapsulated by one word: kaleidoscopic. Journey from the classicism of Spohr and the deep-set romanticism of Brahms, to the early 20th-century rhythmic dynamism of Bartók and recent works from Jaya Suprana and Jonathan Dreyfus. Guest baritone Peter Tregear enables a performance of Spohr’s rarely heard but remarkable song settings which display his mastery of vocal and chamber music. By Royal Appointment The Continuo Collective’s Samantha Cohen (theorbo) and Ruth Wilkinson (recorder) invite you on a sojourn to 17th-century France and the magnificent palace of Versailles. Hear the exquisite music François Couperin and Jacques Hotteterre wrote for King Louis XIV’s chamber, tap your toes to the minuet and gavotte, and be touched by the beauty of the French air played on ‘voice flute’ and theorbo.
The Song Company’s Sunken Dreams is a concert in two halves – two unique and contrasting performances that fuse classical and contemporary influences. The Song Company first delves into the heart of Impressionism – Monet’s iconic Waterlilies – using six voices and the liquid sounds of the vibraphone played by Claire Edwardes. Genuine water percussion, including the rare waterphone and submerged gongs, forms the context for a work by Jack Body; his beautifully balanced sequence of lullabies and dreams conceived especially for The Song Company performed alongside Sculthorpe’s Maranoa Lullaby in part two.

Master Peter’s Puppet Show/ What Next?
Zubin Kanga – Spectrum Zubin Kanga is one of today’s most sought after contemporary music pianists. The London-based Australian returns home with a recital of innovative works by a diverse range of Australian and British composers. Paul Lewis does things differently. Instead of performing recitals that showcase his very real technical prowess with flamboyant works, he devotes himself to the music of a single composer for several years. Since 2011, Lewis has been the willing captive of the piano music of Franz Schubert, beginning with the six late piano sonatas and the works that surround them. There’s very little difference between Paul Lewis’s musical persona and his off-stage one; he is direct, honest and intense. The transparency and candour of his playing simply push open a door into the music, allowing an intimate communion with the composer. Like his mentor Alfred Brendel, Lewis is more than a musician; his musicmaking is almost a philosophy in sound.
While Schubert’s piano music is overshadowed by his orchestral and chamber music, it contains some of his most personal and profound utterances. ‘Schubert writes something that comes from another planet,’ Lewis says. ‘It is something beyond… As though after all our troubles, this is what comes next.’ INFORMATION

Nicky Bomba has built a solid reputation through many musical projects. These include writing and performing with his funk and reggae band, Bomba; conducting the Melbourne Ska Orchestra; playing drums on John Butler’s award-winning albums; and serving as an Artistic Producer for the Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Visible mentoring project. For this concert, Nicky Bomba collaborates with accomplished vocalist Nadee. Born in Port-au-Prince and brought up in Ballarat, Nadee joined hip hop outfit Diafrix as a vocalist in 2005. Nicky Bomba has built a solid reputation through many musical projects. These include writing and performing with his funk and reggae band, Bomba; conducting the Melbourne Ska Orchestra; playing drums on John Butler’s award-winning albums; and serving as an Artistic Producer for the Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Visible mentoring project. For this concert, Nicky Bomba collaborates with accomplished vocalist Nadee. Born in Port-au-Prince and brought up in Ballarat, Nadee joined hip hop outfit Diafrix as a vocalist in 2005. Two of Melbourne Recital Centre’s most popular programs for families return for the September school holidays. The awardwinning children’s book, The Night Garden, comes alive with animation on the big screen and a soundtrack of well known orchestral music such as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and popular nursery rhymes. Peter and his animal friends then come to life through this much loved children’s classic with the addition of a wonderful dance piece created by Patrick Studios Australia. Peter ventures into a meadow and together with his animal friends catch the wolf. This talk examines how musicians use movements to convey emotional expressivity, rely on corporeal information to maintain group cohesion in ensemble performance, and use the spontaneously produced movements like finger clicking when listening to music. The theoretical foundation of the presentation will be ‘embodied cognition,’ that is the view that knowledge is attained through sensorimotor representations of the world and that the human body acts as the main mediator between our thoughts and the environment.
