Now in our fourth year of partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre, we are proud that our Principal Partnership is playing a key role in the ongoing success of this Australian cultural icon. Our partnership is based on a shared commitment to progressive performance brought to life with energy, quality and passion. The Audi team is looking forward to the upcoming August and September season and the world-class performances that will be showcased. The ongoing partnership between our two successful brands is a great way to give back to the Australian community through cultural endeavours that can be enjoyed and accessed by all Australians. I commend the impending concerts to all music aficionados – enjoy!

The Best Place to Hear Melbourne Recital Centre is home to Local Heroes and Great Performers, tango legends and bluegrass mavericks. Discover them during August and September. The next of our Great Performers, soprano Christine Brewer, sings exquisite music by Wagner and a selection of her favourites in an Australian exclusive recital. New York quintet Punch Brothers are going to be big. Already earning rave reviews for their blend of pop, folk and bluegrass (with nods to Radiohead and Wilco), the boys were featured on the Hunger Games soundtrack and are currently storming the US summer festivals. Black Arm Band’s dirtsong honours the 20th anniversary of the Mabo ruling with stirring songs from some of Australia’s leading Indigenous musicians. Singer Katie Noonan and guitarist Karin Schaupp were also inspired by Australia (and our neighbours in New Zealand). The entrancing duo perform Songs of the Southern Skies featuring hits by Gotye, the Finn brothers, Nick Cave and other luminaries. Don’t miss these concerts, and many more, at Melbourne’s best place to hear.

An Australian in Paris – Jane Rutter Internationally acclaimed flutist Jane Rutter stars in a semi-autobiographical celebration of French music, from La Belle Époque to the present day. ‘I went to Paris at the age of 18 to study the flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion, two of the instrument’s great luminaries. In many ways it was the making of me,’ says Jane. Listen as she intersperses tales of her own experiences of Paris with those of the artists, writers and musicians who flocked there to form their ‘artistic personalities,’ all the while bringing her artistry to the music of Debussy, Fauré, Piaf and other French favourites. INFORMATION

Thu 2 Aug 7pm Sat 4 Aug 3pm & 8pm Salon – in cabaret mode Jane Rutter flute Tickets $65 ($55 concession) Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre Pre-order food and beverage options available.

Christine Brewer Storytelling is at the heart of all singing. A song is a one person play and a recital is an evening where a dozen characters unfold a dozen dramas. Christine Brewer is the consummate singing actress – with a double career as operatic star and recitalist, she can command an audience of thousands or just a lucky few with a voice that has been described as ‘a sound like molten gold.’ Christine has inhabited the roles of Isolde and Brünnhilde from Wagner’s epics, which require a voice of hall-filling power, but it is in recital that the nuances and

colour of her opulent voice come to the fore. She has selected a program of works by Wagner, Smith, Arlen and Britten – composers who wrote ecstatically for voice, especially one like hers. This is a recital that promises transcendent beauty, superb technique, drama and warmth in equal measure. INFORMATION

One of the most exhilarating bands to come out of New York in recent years, Punch Brothers explain their music as ‘that of a bluegrass band, but our influences range from Radiohead and Wilco to Bach and Mozart and Bill Monroe’ – The New Yorker reviewing their work as ‘wide ranging and restlessly imaginative.’ Made up of Chris Thile (lead vocals/mandolin), Gabe Witcher (fiddle/violin), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris Eldridge (guitar) and Paul Kowert (bass), the band’s virtuosic credentials are unsurpassed. In their first visit to Melbourne, they showcase music from their latest

album Who’s Feeling Young Now?, hailed by Vanity Fair as ‘their most expressive work yet as an ensemble – sophisticated, poppy, kinetic and profound, all at once.’

Sunken Dreams François Couperin

By Royal Appointment The Continuo Collective’s Samantha Cohen (theorbo) and Ruth Wilkinson (recorder) invite you on a sojourn to 17th-century France and the magnificent palace of Versailles. Hear the exquisite music François Couperin and Jacques Hotteterre wrote for King Louis XIV’s chamber, tap your toes to the minuet and gavotte, and be touched by the beauty of the French air played on ‘voice flute’ and theorbo.

The Song Company’s Sunken Dreams is a concert in two halves – two unique and contrasting performances that fuse classical and contemporary influences. The Song Company first delves into the heart of Impressionism – Monet’s iconic Waterlilies – using six voices and the liquid sounds of the vibraphone played by Claire Edwardes. Genuine water percussion, including the rare waterphone and submerged gongs, forms the context for a work by Jack Body; his beautifully balanced sequence of lullabies and dreams conceived especially for The Song Company performed alongside Sculthorpe’s Maranoa Lullaby in part two.

Duo Chamber Melange (Ivana Tomaskova, violin & Tamara Smolyar, piano) presents a concert best encapsulated by one word: kaleidoscopic. Journey from the classicism of Spohr and the deep-set romanticism of Brahms, to the early 20th-century rhythmic dynamism of Bartók and recent works from Jaya Suprana and Jonathan Dreyfus. Guest baritone Peter Tregear enables a performance of Spohr’s rarely heard but remarkable song settings which display his mastery of vocal and chamber music. Sweet melody, Balkans drive and Indonesian jazz influences ensure there is something for everyone.

Master Peter’s Puppet Show/ What Next?

Zubin Kanga – Spectrum Zubin Kanga is one of today’s most sought after contemporary music pianists. The London-based Australian returns home with a recital of innovative works by a diverse range of Australian and British composers. Zubin performs works by contemporary luminaries including rising star Marcus Whale, whose hypnotic Errata draws on his experience of improvising with electronics; Andrew Harrison, whose piece is inspired by his family’s personal connections to the French battlefields of the First World War; Rosalind Page’s Being and Time II: Tabula Rasa, which draws inspiration from the work of Australian painter Imants Tillers; and Michael Finnissy’s Z/K, inspired by the symphonies of 18th-century composer Sammartini, as well as those of Mahler

and Berg. These works were commissioned by and written for Zubin, who has collaborated with the composers to explore the sonic, theatrical and virtuosic conventions of the piano recital. INFORMATION

Zubin Kanga

Puppets are attacked and a theatre is destroyed as the legendary Don Quixote lays waste to a helpless puppet show. This episode from the classic Cervantes novel inspired Spanish composer Manuel de Falla to compose Master Peter’s Puppet Show (pictured). Now Victorian Opera, in collaboration with Black Hole Theatre, bring this short puppet opera to life as part of a fascinating 20th-century opera double bill questioning notions of identity and being.

‘ Kanga styles himself as an exponent of piano repertoire that explores new paradigms of pianistic performance.’

Australian Voices: James Ledger Best known to Australian audiences for orchestral compositions such as Indian Pacific, James Ledger’s equally distinctive chamber works make up the fifth program of Australian Voices 2012. Directed by clarinettist Paul Dean, Ledger’s exciting and accessible compositional style is sure to engage.

Victorian Opera’s 2011 Developing Artist Daniel Carter debuts as conductor in this enigmatic double bill.

American composer and living legend Elliot Carter wrote his only opera at 90. What Next? opens with a volley of percussion conveying the harsh sound of a car crash. The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner’s work follows a group of people who regain consciousness after an accident. As Rose, Stella, Zen, Harry or Larry and Mama all try to recall who they are, the question on everyone’s mind is, are they in fact survivors or victims?

Emily Dickinson – 19th-century American poet, genius, recluse, woman in white. Listen to her poetry and letters spoken and sung in Voicing Emily, a spellbinding work of theatre by librettist Helen Noonan. A lieder opera with music by Jane Hammond, Greg Mason and Eddie Perfect, Voicing Emily combines the intimacy and poetry of art song with the theatricality and drama of opera. Accompanied by an ensemble of musicians, Noonan is joined onstage by Theresa Borg and Caity Fowler – these three women play Emily at 20, 35 and 55. The result is an enthralling visual, aural and musical journey.

Listeners and critics are quick to decide who the greatest interpreters of classical music are, but the evidence of sound recordings tells a sobering story regarding changes of taste and expert opinion. This is nowhere clearer than in the history of performing J.S. Bach’s music. Dorottya Fabian discusses the implications for our understanding of music’s expressive and emotional power. A facilitated panel discussion on the topic will follow the talk.

Trio Anima Mundi

Mother Russia Trio Anima Mundi takes a musical journey to Russia and its neighbours. Fiery and richly romantic, Armenian composer Babajanian’s F sharp minor Piano Trio brought him immediate fame and is hailed as a masterpiece. The Piano Trio by Paul Juon, also educated in Moscow, is powerfully imaginative and full of deep feeling. The turbulence of these two composers is contrasted with the timeless elegance and humour of Hummel’s beautiful Trio which has its own Russian hue in the final movement.

‘ Kynan Robinson’s new piece Solo in Red is both astoundingly beautiful and original. Setting out to capture the atmospheres of a Cormac McCarthy novel, it does all that and more.’

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE • AUGUST

Solo in Red, a new work by acclaimed Melbourne composer Kynan Robinson, is a musical exploration of the sparseness and fragility of Cormac McCarthy’s writing. Inspired by Blood Meridian, Suttree and The Border Trilogy, Robinson’s composition is textured and dynamically complex – a hauntingly beautiful work. ‘McCarthy’s writing and the atmosphere he creates has a sparseness, detachment and tension and is always touched with a dry wit. He presents both the absolute beauty and absolute ugliness of existence, often within the same sentence,’ says Kynan Robinson.

Ludovico’s Band takes you to the dazzling and highly perfumed world of the court of Louis the XIV, where prowess on the dance floor was as highly prized as the turn of a phrase or thrust of a sword. Feuillet’s treatise Chorégraphie demonstrates that music of the Baroque period is, first and foremost, dance music. Suites of courantes, bourées and sarabandes found their way from the streets, by way of the French courts, and went on to take Europe by storm. This buoyant music will be for you what it was for those long ago rouged faces beneath powdered wigs: an absolute toe tapper.

MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE • SEPTEMBER

Paul Lewis does things differently. Instead of performing recitals that showcase his very real technical prowess with flamboyant works, he devotes himself to the music of a single composer for several years. Since 2011, Lewis has been the willing captive of the piano music of Franz Schubert, beginning with the six late piano sonatas and the works that surround them. There’s very little difference between Paul Lewis’s musical persona and his off-stage one; he is direct, honest and intense. The transparency and candour of his playing simply push open a door into the music, allowing an intimate communion with the composer. Like his mentor Alfred Brendel, Lewis is more than a musician; his musicmaking is almost a philosophy in sound.

While Schubert’s piano music is overshadowed by his orchestral and chamber music, it contains some of his most personal and profound utterances. ‘Schubert writes something that comes from another planet,’ Lewis says. ‘It is something beyond… As though after all our troubles, this is what comes next.’ INFORMATION

His songs, less well known than his instrumental music, will take us to the destinations of his exiles and triumphs – Paris and Rome – and back to his only true love, Buenos Aires. Join pianist Andrea Katz, bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopolous and guests Ensemble Nonino for a journey with Piazolla.

What if pianist Franz Liszt had performed behind a screen – would the reported ‘poetry’ of his performance have been diminished? Do you tap your toe when listening to upbeat music? This talk examines how musicians use movements to convey emotional expressivity, rely on corporeal information to maintain group cohesion in ensemble performance, and use the spontaneously produced movements like finger clicking when listening to music. The theoretical foundation of the presentation will be ‘embodied cognition,’ that is the view that knowledge is attained through sensorimotor representations of the world and that the human body acts as the main mediator between our thoughts and the environment.
