The Continuo Collective, formed by Samantha Cohen, is a showcase for the unsung hero of Baroque music, the theorbo (bass lute), and the improvisatory art of basso continuo. The Collective’s first series, The King’s Bedroom (intimate music from Europe in the time of Louis XIV), invites you to get up close and personal with the largest member of the lute family in a series of duet performances with the elegant and softly-spoken voices of the viola da gamba, recorder, voice and Baroque guitar. King Louis XIV’s patronage of the arts helped shape the Baroque period in all its grandeur. The intimate space of the Salon is the ideal venue to experience music fit for a King.

In 2012, Flinders Quartet (Erica Kennedy, violin; Matthew Tomkins, violin; Helen Ireland, viola and ZoĂŤ Knighton, cello) have challenged themselves to come up with new ways of looking at and listening to string quartets. They meet a jazz icon in Vince Jones; composers creating masterpieces in spite of, or perhaps because of, their hearing impediment; and a play that takes us behind the scenes of a string quartet, revealing the intricate interplay between four artistic personalities, culminating in a performance of Death and the Maiden. Directed by Marshall McGuire and Tommie Andersson, Ludovico’s Band is one of Australia’s leading period instrument ensembles. Combining the lush plucked sounds of theorbos, guitars and triple harp with refined violins, viola da gamba and percussion, the group creates a unique sound world in which to explore the depths of human emotion in 17th and 18th century music. Improvisation plays a key role in the realisation of Baroque music, and this is a defining element of Ludovico’s Band’s performances. The ensemble’s 2012 concert series, The Baroque Destination, will take you on a journey to the Baroque heart of Europe, placing music in its historical and social context with readings and visual artistry.

MELBOURNE ART SONG COLLECTIVE A BO U T
Melbourne Art Song Collective is one of the most fascinating musical groups in a busy local scene. The starting point for all MASC events is the presentation of art song in all its guises: from popular classics to neglected masterpieces. MASC draws on a wide range of brilliant singers, both established artists and the stars of tomorrow, and performances are further distinguished by the inclusion of chamber music and solo piano repertoire that puts art song into a richer context. MASC’s philosophy is that great music should be appreciated in a comfortable and intimate environment. All MASC events take place in cabaret-style, so order a glass of your favourite wine and a cheese platter to get ‘up close and personal’ with superlative performers.

The engaging concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Wilma Smith, invites her friends to the Salon to perform three programs she has curated to showcase their diverse talents. First up, Wilma invites Phillip Arkinstall to perform the Brahms Clarinet Quintet. Other guests in the series include cellists Howard Penny and Rohan de Korte, Brett Dean and Simon Oswell on viola, violinists Daniel Kossov and Roger Jonsson and pianist Ian Munro. Most of Wilma’s guests will be well known to chamber music fans but she will also present rising stars during the season when two brilliant young performers, bassist Phoebe Russell and cellist William Hewer are guests in the October concert. The chemistry of mixing youth and experience is guaranteed to produce an effervescent collaboration. TAG S
