THE RACE FOR THE CHINESE ZODIAC

Three beloved fairy tales, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, come to life in elegant and rarely-seen animations by animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger with a live performance by contemporary Icelandic band Amiina.

The story of how the animals of the Chinese zodiac came to be is told through music and projected images. Amiina Amiina create beguiling soundscapes and majestic songs with a haunting warmth and intimacy that transports and hypnotises to incredible effect. The Icelandic sextet, of Sigur Rós fame, possess astonishingly immense talent and their exquisite contemporary and magical musicmaking reflects a pure adoration and reverence of sound. With a plethora of instruments and found objects including strings, glockenspiel, theremin, bells, harp and electronics, Amiina create a sound experience that will immerse you body and soul.

Three-time ARIA Award-winning jazz pianist Keller is acclaimed for her original ensemble The Andrea Keller Quartet. In this special concert Andrea presents a solo performance of original compositions, arrangements and improvisations, including works created under her Australia Council fellowship. A feature will be a number of Andrea's highly sensitive and compelling arrangements of Wayne Shorter originals, from her 2007 solo album Footprints.

Takemitsu Between Tides Copland Vitebsk Bunch Swing Shift The 'knockabout' Benaud Trio (Lachlan Bramble, violin, Ewan Bramble, cello and Amir Farid, piano) celebrate music from around the globe. Toru Takemitsu's gentle, poetic sound world recreates the hypnotic calm of the ocean, Aaron Copland embraces his heritage in Vitebsk, a study on a Jewish theme and Kenji Bunch takes us on a whirlwind tour of New York City nightlife.

Scattolin joins Erica Kennedy in a program that features rarely heard works by Paganini, whose manifold talents extended to the guitar, and Astor Piazzolla's whirlwind visit through the four ages of the tango from its beginnings in the bordellos of Buenos Aires through to the concert hall of today. The program is rounded off by one of Massimo's own compositions, The Autumn Song.

Mozart Symphony No.40 in G minor, KV.550 Weber Clarinet Concerto No.1 in F minor, Op.73 The urgent opening gesture of Mozart’s Symphony No.40 ushers us into a dark and dramatic world of turbulent operatic emotion, in the words of one critic it is ‘a work of passion, violence and grief’. This most famous of Mozart's symphonies is instantly recognisable and gripping. Equally powerful is Carl Maria von Weber's First Clarinet Concerto, a glittering star turn for an instrument with a mercurial temperament and a gift for virtuoso 'vocal' acrobatics. Clearly talent ran in the family: Weber was Mozart's cousin-in-law. In the spotlight is ANAM clarinettist Alexander Morris and Orchestra Victoria (no strangers to opera) directed from the violin by concertmaster Adam Chalabi. Wreckage is a collaborative work between Australian composers Oren Ambarchi (Sunn O))), Jim O'Rourke, John Zorn) and James Rushford (Golden Fur, Jon Rose String Quartet, Francis Plagne). Premiered in September 2011 at Oslo's Ultima Contemporary Music Festival, the material, though repetitive, shifts itself in unpredictable ways to create an amorphous, and extremely delicate, sonic world. Wreckage draws upon both avant-garde and avant-pop sensibilities, loosely influenced by the work of Alvin Lucier, Luciano Cilio and Roberto Cacciapaglia. This is a reflection of both composers' engagement with rock, experimental and improvised musics.

Melbourne Prize for Music 2010 award-winning drummer David Jones showcases his artistry in an intimate solo concert. Drawing on his experiences travelling to the East, he combines Eastern metaphysics and sacred rhythms with the mesmerising showmanship of a drumming maestro. David improvises around a stage strewn with more than 30 percussion instruments, including Tibetan and Japanese singing bowls, two drum kits and an African kalimba. He deconstructs the modern drum kit, revealing a hidden world of vibrational energy as ancient and sublime as it is powerful. A visual and aural feast to inspire all music lovers.

Debussy's Cello Sonata was originally entitled Pierrot Furious with the Moon. Its ethereal portrayal of a distorted world is matched by Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh's splintered utterings in Towards the Beginning, and Brett Dean's Night Window – the musings of a self-confessed insomniac.

Diego Guerrero & his sextet Singer, guitarist and producer Diego Guerrero looks beyond convention and history to fuse the passionate music and songs of flamenco with Afro-Cuban rhythms and the added spice of contemporary jazz – a blend reflected in the personnel of his sextet. With his Spanish compadres of flamenco guitarist José Fernández and singer Naike Ponce is a skilled Cuban rhythm section – bassist Dany Noel, pianist Luis Guerra and drummer Pico Miliám – and flamboyant percussionist Nasrine Rahmani, of Persian and Mauritian heritage. Diego, born in Andalusia and now living in Madrid, is recognised as a ground breaking young innovator, twisting strains of tango and copla, salsa and jazz into flamenco, yet remaining faithful to the purity of the music’s essence.

‘Despite his youth, Guerrero’s voice is flecked with the grainy expressiveness that characterises authentic flamenco singing. The final number of the night – a fascinating Latin–Flamenco hybrid that referenced John Coltrane’s Resolution before dissolving into a Cuban rumba.’ The Age

Monteverdi Erotic Madrigals Banchieri Barca di Venetia per Padova (Boat from Venice to Padua) Prepare to laugh and fall in love as Australia's leading vocal ensemble, the Song Company presents an hilarious comedy set in the waters of Venice – complemented by nine mind-blowing madrigals. Venice’s power at sea once seemed indestructible. For centuries the city’s economic super status was reflected through an incredible flowering of the arts demonstrated in painting and in music. The palaces and churches alongside its famous canals became the repositories of extraordinary work; to this day the envy of the world. For this all-Venetian extravaganza, Roland Peelman has selected nine breath-taking madrigals by Monteverdi as counterpart to Banchieri’s 1623 Boat from Venice to Padua. This hilarious early musical comedy sees the Song Company expertly flit between a set of dubious commedia characters who share an unlikely encounter on a small boat.

In affirming our country's significant musical lineage, Melbourne Recital Centre and the Australian National Academy of Music continue to celebrate the work of leading Australian composers in this chamber series directed by ANAM faculty and special guests, with musicians of the Academy. The Australian String Quartet begin 2012 with Peter Sculthorpe’s quartet inspired by the starkly beautiful landscape of Kakadu and its inhabitants. From Australia’s unique interior to the sunlit uplands of old Bohemia, few composers wrote music which radiated such spontaneous warmth and charm as Antonin Dvorák. Even by his exalted standards, this string quartet is full of gorgeous melodies where exuberance is masterfully fused with poignant tenderness. The program culminates with one of Shostakovich’s towering chamber pieces, the Piano Quintet, composed in 1940 and described as ‘a last ray of hope’ for Russia. It is a work of grand symphonic proportions combining the composer’s hallmark skittish humour and austere dignity with an underlying tension. v

Rachmaninov famously said that in music, a composer expresses ‘...the country of his birth, his love affairs, his religion, the books that have influenced him, the pictures he loves. Joe Chindamo piano When Australian jazz legend Joe Chindamo plays the classics (as he has done with Mozart on the latest Hush recording) he doesn't merely ‘jazz them up’, but expands the musical language of the original in such a way that preserves the integrity of the composer while creating a new music. He also reminds us that until recent times, the ability to improvise was de rigeur. It has been said that Chopin's pieces were but pale distillations of his own improvisations. At this concert, Joe brings Chopin to life in a way in which he has not been heard before.

A stunning concert series of performances by outstanding young musicians. Be inspired by these talented performers. The three Top Class Music Performace, Music Investigation concerts feature students who received very high grades for their VCE performance examinations in 2011. The concerts are compered by the Chief Assessors and present a range of instruments, interpretations and styles by soloists and groups – both contemporary and classical. For more than a decade she was muse to the legendary French singer, songwriter and enfant terrible Gainsbourg. Birkin and Gainsbourg produced six albums and continued to collaborate long after their relationship finished. During her illustrious career, Jane Birkin has starred in countless films and released dozens of recordings. The muse-lover-mentor web of Birkin and Gainsbourg connects her intimately with these lyrics. Many of his songs were written specifically for her (with that voice in mind) and given that they are mostly about love – love of her and with her – Jane sings them with a very real, if understated, passion.

Janácek String Quartet No.2 Intimate Letters Bowman world premiere of a new work based on Michael Leunig’s The Curly Pyjama Letters Costello The Juliet Letters The days of letter writing have all but left us. Together with Vince Jones, Flinders Quartet explores this now antiquated form of self expression combined with music, and revel in the personal stories they reveal. Letters of unrequited love, innocent letters sharing the joy of life's beauty, letters marking history. They all serve to inspire this concert of personal stories through the most intimate music-making.

Hypnotic, mystical and beautiful, Shivkumar Sharma creates music that transcends time and cultural traditions. As a celebrated santoor player (a Kashmiri instrument similar to a dulcimer), Shivkumar produces a complex web of mystical sounds from the ancient 100-string instrument. Barshai) Chamber Symphony Op.110a Beethoven VioIin Concerto Kolja Blacher is the complete musician, recognised around the world as a superb violinist and dynamic leader. In this concert, Blacher guides the orchestra through a musical journey encompassing the grace of Haydn’s early symphony, the intensity of Shostakovich and the poetry of Beethoven’s glorious Violin Concerto.

Everyone will enjoy these stunning original dance performances presented by VCE Dance and VET Dance students. These talented performers received very high grades for their VCE performance examinations in 2011. The two concerts have different programs and include a range of VET Dance styles and both VCE Dance Technique and Composition solos. Concerts are compered by the Chief Assessors for Dance whose commentaries address the assessment criteria.

Bach Johannes-Passion, BWV 245 JS Bach didn’t compose any operas: his sacred works are vivid dramas and profoundly personal meditations on humanity and its relationship with God. Bach’s St John Passion is an intimate and searing depiction of Christ’s trial and death, at once a gripping and ferocious narrative and a moving reaction to Christ’s sacrifice, expressed in music that is by turns majestic, savage and radiant. JS Bach’s art continues to touch hearts and minds in ways that no other composers’ can and his St John Passion is an iconic and essential musical experience. Continuing a Recital Centre Easter tradition, acclaimed conductor Stephen Layton, Director of Music of Trinity College Cambridge and Artistic Director of the London Sinfonia, marshals the forces of choir, soloists and period instrument orchestra Ludovico’s Band to bring to life Bach’s most powerful masterpiece in the pure acoustic of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

This year Elysium Ensemble celebrate the music of Boismortier, Telemann and Quantz, drawing from their cycles of solos and duets. True to its name, Elysium Ensemble creates a state of ideal happiness by bringing together musicians whose affinity with Baroque music is combined with a mastery of their instruments.

Brahms Violin Sonata in A major, Op.100 No.2 Beethoven Piano Sonata No.30 in E major Op.109 Pärt Spiegel im Spiegel Falla (arr. Fritz Kreisler) Spanish Dance Violinist Benjamin Breen leaves his New York base to make a rare return home to the Australian stage joined by renowned pianist Caroline Almonte for a program replete with beauty and liveliness. The sweeping lyricism of Brahms’ soaring melodies gives way to Beethoven’s innovative late piano sonata. Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel is a modern classic; it offers a moment of tranquil loveliness before the rousing flamenco-style finale of Falla’s Spanish Dance.

Greg Dikmans (Baroque flute) and Lucinda Moon (Baroque violin) explore the rich and varied repertoire of the 18th century instrumental solo without bass and duo for two melody instruments. Rarely-performed duos and works by their contemporaries will provide an enlightening context.

Musicians like 22-year-old Behzod Abduraimov come along once in a generation. When the pianist from Tashkent took to the stage for the finals of the 2009 London International Piano Competition, the audience knew that they were seeing an astonishing talent. Abduraimov’s barnstorming performance of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto brought the electrified crowd to their feet and won him the Grand Prize. His performances since then have left critics searching for new and even more glowing superlatives, and orchestras including the London Philharmonic clamouring to engage him. With a program that displays the versatility and brilliance that has drawn comparisons with Vladimir Horowitz, Behzod takes us from Scarlatti’s Baroque jewels to Liszt’s diabolically difficult Mephisto Waltz. While poles apart in mood and language, all the works on the bill require a commanding sense of colour, texture and musical sensitivity and more than a dash of bravado.

One of the great violinists of our time, Kolja Blacher takes on three peaks of the solo violin repertoire in the first half of this program: two of Bach’s partitas, and Berio’s Sequenza, which redefined the instrument’s technical possibilities, while paying homage to Bach. Blacher then joins musicians from the MSO for one of the miracles of chamber music, Mendelssohn’s glorious Octet, written when he was just 16.

Acclaimed Italian guitarist Massimo Scattolin returns to showcase the diversity and colour of his instrument with celebrated pianist, organist and composer Anthony Halliday. The program ranges from the Romanticism of Weber's Divertimento through to the best-loved movement of the best-loved concerto for guitar, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, with a detour to Buenos Aires courtesy of Piazzolla's Four Seasons.

Australia's newest vocal ensemble consisting of Andrea Katz (piano), Merlyn Quaife (soprano), Sally-Anne Russell (mezzo-soprano), Christopher Saunders (tenor) and Nicholas Dinopoulos (bass-baritone), present the Australian premiere of Stephen Hough's song cycle, Other Love Songs. In an eclectic program, they celebrate the universality of love, a feeling that knows no borders. Hough covers religious, gay and fraternal love across time. The conversations of Beauty and The Beast (Ma mère l'oye) pave the way for songs from pre WWII Weimar Kabaret. Brahms takes us around 19th century eastern Europe to end with the eternal wisdom of Goethe.

A classic start to the year with two of Mozart’s greatest masterpieces framing Beethoven’s concerto for the unusual combination of violin, cello and piano with orchestra. Here performed by a trio of exciting young artists, experience a work that combines the grandeur of Beethoven’s orchestral style with the subtlety of his chamber music.

In this Australian exclusive, renowned singer-songwriter Eddi Reader brings her acclaimed project showcasing The Bard's best-loved songs to Melbourne.

TrioKROMA was formed to give a voice to the charming Romantic repertoire written for piano, voice and clarinet. Performing works ranging from Schubert's popular iconic masterpiece Shepherd on the Rock to exposing lost gems by composers such as Lachner, Spaeth, Proch, Lindtpaintner and Kalliwoda – TrioKROMA performs a delightful selection of works from Art Song through to the Salon and Chamber Music of the German Romantic tradition.
