The Metropolis New Music Festival, our annual collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, explores the sound of the city from Los Angeles to the streets of 15th-century Paris and Melbourne’s laneways. The Blind Boys of Alabama The Blind Boys of Alabama has the rare distinction of being recognised around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. Not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions, the group helped to define those traditions in the 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s, the band has persevered through seven

decades to become one of the most recognised and decorated Gospel Soul music groups in the world. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind, AfricanAmerican singers, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, went on to win five Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime

Achievement Award, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents. An Evening with Low ‘AFTER TWO DECADES, A BAND THAT COULD EASILY FEEL PART OF THE WALLPAPER REMAINS HUNGRY TO SHOW THAT YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT LIES BENEATH.’ UNCUT

In Tempore Paschali If ever someone set out to demonstrate the joy of singing in polyphony, Monteverdi’s ‘Missa In illo tempore’ — published together with his famous Vespers and dedicated to Pope Paul V — would be a natural choice. With incredible six-part detail and the contrapuntal skill the composer was so keen to show off to Rome, its gloriously harmonious part-writing glows from beginning to end. Set within the context of Easter and the Gombert motet on which it’s based, Monteverdi’s mass still sounds as new as the day it was written. From its beginnings in 1984, a cappella ensemble The Song Company has grown to exemplify its aim of providing for Australia a group capable of international standard performances in the field of vocal chamber music. The ensemble’s repertoire covers vocal music from the 12th century to contemporary classical works, and is unique in its stylistic diversity.

The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs a program of orchestral works from the 20th century, led by American conductor Kevin Noe. The concert program includes John Adams’ jazz-inflected foxtrot for orchestra The Chairman Dances, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Piazzolla’s Oblivion and the second Suite from Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe.

Ed Kuepper: Solo & Electric Four decades after the release of his first record, the iconic Australian classic (I’m) Stranded by The Saints, Ed Kuepper returns with an album that may well be considered a high point in his lengthy and uncompromising career. Recorded over three days in August at Gasworks Studio, Brisbane, Lost Cities is Ed Kuepper’s 50th release (excluding compilations) and is the 21st on his own Prince Melon Records label. It is Ed’s first entirely solo and electric release, a format he likes to refer to as ‘solo orchestral’. ‘When I was a kid I always processed recordings as a kind of singular whole, so when I started to play the guitar I wanted my playing to be the entire orchestra/band rather than just the guy strumming in the corner.

For more than 20 years, Minnesota’s finest have been conjuring both hypnotic beauty and debilitating tension with their distinctive brand of delicate, space-infused music. Low’s austere aesthetic initially found them at the vanguard of the ‘slow-core’ genre in the ‘90s, a movement developed as a direct foil to the nihilistic heaviness of then-dominant grunge. Low outgrew that restrictive moniker long ago expanding their musical palette with each album. Low’s music is an art-form of intertwining dark themes and undercurrents

with gently gorgeous and uplifting music. Low’s nucleus is husband-and-wife Alan Sparhawk (guitar/vocals) and Mimi Parker (percussion/vocals) – abetted by bassist Steve Garrington. Camilla Tilling’s recitals are lessons in superb storytelling: with consummate poise and radiant voice, Tilling weaves magical spells in song. It’s a talent that has her in demand on concert and opera stages from Berlin to Los Angeles — and, naturally, Melbourne. Her highly acclaimed recordings of Schubert and Strauss have won her fans around the world, but the best way to experience what makes Tilling special is to see her sing live. Tilling’s purity of tone is complemented by the warmth of her personality. It makes her the perfect Mozart interpreter, for example, but also makes her ideal for Schumann’s great song cycle, Frauenliebe und —leben, a woman’s journey from the first flush of love through marriage and finally the death of her beloved. Handel’s Messiah with The Choir of Trinity College The Choir of Trinity College and conductor Jonathan Grieves-Smith are renowned for performances of excellence and searing intensity. Here at Eastertide, with four outstanding international soloists, they sing the most-loved and thrilling oratorio of them all. Written in just 24 days in 1842 and performed for the first time that year in Dublin, Handel’s Messiah tells of the prophecy, birth, suffering and resurrection of Jesus in music of intimacy and grandeur, desolation and joy. It is a superb operatic drama written for the intensity of the concert hall and is impossible to hear unmoved.

Yes, a real cannon fired by the steady hand of a Royal Melbourne Hospital neurosurgeon, none the less. The cannon will be in the 1812 Overture, of course. Cellist Julian Smiles will enrapture you with the delicacy of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra and the entire orchestra will breathe fire and passion in the vigorous Symphony No.4. Songs to a Distant Beloved Songmakers Australia welcomes its newest core member, Sydney-based international tenor Andrew Goodwin, with a program of old and new favourites. The concert begins with Mozart’s beautiful Notturni for three voices, followed by Beethoven’s heart wrenching tribute ‘To the Distant Beloved’ on the bicentenary of its composition. The ensemble turns to quartet mode to conclude with a performance of the Spanisches Liederspiel as originally intended by Schumann. One of Australia’s leading ensembles, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s most prominent singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of chamber music.

‘These Sculthorpe pieces have a special place in my heart. My teacher was the first Australian to play Songs of Sea & Sky, and it really stands at the pinnacle of Australian clarinet music for its beauty and beguiling sonorities. Tabuh Tabuhan is a piece I have played many times including several times in the presence of the composer. In fact, the last time we were together I was talking to Peter about the mistakes in the new score and I at last have an excuse to revisit the work with both my scores (old and new) and correct the new one so performances in the future can be much more as Peter wanted them. And the 8th string quartet, well, it’s a true Australian icon.’ Paul Dean

‘Your parents can make you practise, but they can’t make you want to be an artist,’ says Michael Barenboim. That practice paid off, because Michael’s reputation as a soloist and as concertmaster looks likely to match that of his famous pianist parents’, and on his own very substantial merits. With a repertoire that stretches from Bach to Boulez, Michael’s playing is a blend of the cerebral and the visceral — the emphasis is on finding connections and stimulating thought. In his Melbourne debut, Michael performs four of Bach’s most sublime, yet intimate works — they’re like eavesdropping on soliloquies that seem to touch upon every human emotion from tragedy to joy, solemnity and dancing grace.

Kimba offers jazz standards from her recent album as well as original works by Ryan Griffith and Peter Emptage, the composer behind the album’s stand-out track ‘Sickness and Health’. Lee Abrahmsen & Omega Ensemble Critically acclaimed soprano Lee Abrahmsen joins Sydney’s Omega Ensemble for a chamber recital exploring works by Schubert, Strauss and Poulenc. Richard Strauss is today best known for his grand orchestral work and operas, but was in fact also a brilliant miniaturist. Strauss’ Four Songs Op.27 were the result of a wedding gift from Strauss to his wife Pauline, a soprano. Francis Poulenc is one of the finest 20th-century art song composers. Poulenc chose modern poems, texts free from tired imagery and romantic clichés and often replete with humour and a quintessentially modern sense of irony. This concert also features his colourful clarinet and piano Sonata and concludes with Schubert’s much-loved Shepherd on the Rock.

Singer/songwriter, Lior is renowned for his beautiful voice and lyrics that radiate truth and sincerity, and as the world searches for compassion and understanding, the importance of music as a means of communication cannot be undervalued. In this musical narrative of love, loss and compassion, Tinalley String Quartet premieres a new song cycle by Ade Vincent and Lior, plus three of Dvořák’s rousing love songs from his collection of Cypresses. These echoes of love cherished, tormented and forgotten are paired with Barber’s haunting Adagio from his String Quartet Op.11 and Lior’s achingly beautiful ‘My Grandfather’. In a final quest for peace, Lior and Nigel Westlake reimagine ‘Sim Shalom’ (Grant Peace) from Compassion, merging the symphonic world with that of the string quartet. Ravel’s effusive String Quartet opens the program. Critics and public alike rejected the quartet when it was first performed, and yet now it is one of the genres most beloved works. At times wistful and at other times melancholic, even devastating, the work is in itself a reminder of the changeable nature of public sentiment.

For the very first time, Melbourne Recital Presents a solo recital featuring one of the most distinctive and mysterious instruments of the 20th century. You’ve probably heard the ethereal voice of this early electronic instrument the ondes martenot in Olivier Messiaen’s symphonic music, in the TV series Thunderbirds, in film scores including Ghostbusters, The Revenant and countless horror and sci-fi movies, in popular recordings of Edith Piaf or on Radiohead’s 2000 album Kid A. The Company of Pianos V with Tony Gould Pianist and composer Andrea Keller has established herself as an important contributor to Australian jazz and contemporary music. Described as having one of Australia’s most consistently interesting musical minds (Doug Spencer), she has released numerous albums as leader, toured nationally and internationally and received commissions from a wide array of musicians, ensembles and organisations. The Company of Pianos is a series, created by Andrea, which is now entering its third year. Masterful pianist/improviser and composer, Tony Gould joins Keller for an hour of improvisations and songs played on two pianos. The repertoire features compositions by Keller and her guests, and others from the Australian songbook.

Conductor Richard Gill guides his audience through Maurice Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin (The Tomb of Couperin). Ravel’s suite of piano pieces was composed in 1917 and later orchestrated. It pays tribute not only to an age of French grandeur, but to Ravel’s friends who died in the Great War. Charismatic musical personality Richard Gill and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra take you on an interactive journey through this immortal piece of music.

Mozart Requiem: 100 Voices The voices of 100 children and the Brandenburg Choir weave through the extraordinary beauty of the Renaissance and climax with Bach’s famous Cantata 140 ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’ (Sleepers Wake) and the rousing, celebratory chorus from Handel’s Messiah, the Hallelujah Chorus. A composer of unchallenged genius, at the height of his powers, desperately tries to finish a lucrative commission — a requiem mass for the dead – while he himself is dying. It is impossible not to be moved by the poignant irony of Mozart’s Requiem. Beginning in the Renaissance and ending in the Classical period, this majestic and moving concert features the Brandenburg Choir united with a spectacular children’s choir, selected in each city for this tour.

Experience the urgent restlessness of two great American cities: Los Angeles’ famous Sunset Strip as depicted by Michael Daugherty; and Steve Reich’s City Life, his brilliant account of the surging, cacophonous streets of New York City teeming with the sounds of car horns, sirens and pile-drivers. Unsuk Chin’s Graffiti — a celebration of street art in all its forms, and Alex Turley’s City of Ghosts, commissioned through the Cybec 21st-Century Australian Composers Program complete the urban soundscape.

Threaded through this program are the sounds of city streets through the ages — as composed by Orlando Gibbons of Tudor England and Luciano Berio of 20th-century Italy. It includes Aaron Copland’s gritty Music for a Great City and two works inspired by Atlanta, Georgia: Jennifer Higdon’s City Scape, and Michael Kurth’s Everything Lasts Forever.

Cities of the imagination dominate this program including Olivier Messiaen’s celestial city of many colours and Heiner Goebbels’ self-descriptive ‘phenomenon of the city from various sides’. Composed shortly after the Olivier Messiaen’s release from Stalag VII and in the midst of World War II, Visions de l’Amen, an hour-long devotional fresco was given a clandestine premiere in Nazi-occupied Paris. At the pianos were Messiaen himself and the brilliant young pianist Yvonne Loriod, later his wife and muse. It was the first of a lifetime of collaborations. Sharing the apocalyptic imagery and coruscating musical language of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, Visions de l’Amen is a fiercely beautiful, exquisitely sensuous meditation on heavenly power and love.

Messiaen said his faith was the ‘grand drama’ of his life; Visions de l’Amen is one of his most majestic performances. Virtuosi Aura Go and Tomoe Kawabata close the 2016 Metropolis New Music Festival with this profoundly moving masterpiece, a pendant to the MSO’s Heavenly Cities concert. THE LETTER STRING QUARTET

FLINDERS QUARTET

Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven; together, their string quartets have inspired and intimidated composers for centuries. Australian composer, Stuart Greenbaum cites Mozart as having been a guiding force in his string quartet writing, stating ‘… in the best works of Mozart, the elegance is genuine from the smallest harmonic sequence through to the larger architectural design. I’m also intrigued by Mozart’s melodic contours, whose notes loop back inside others like an interlocking pattern you might see in Escher.’ Flinders Quartet performs string quartets that inspire and delight from the great masters of the genre, and premiere a new work by Melbourne’s own Stuart Greenbaum.

The Letter String Quartet (TLSQ) performs an exciting amalgamation of the musical musings of two continents. Central to the performance is the world premiere of Australian/American composer Wally Gunn’s latest string quartet commissioned by TLSQ, Blood, an aural mapping of the circulatory system of the body. Also featuring the works of renown American composers Erik DeLuca and Caroline Shaw (2013 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for music) and Australia’s award winning pianist/composer Andrea Keller, this concert will captivate the quartet’s growing cult audience and introduce new listeners to their wild music highs, unique fusing of strings and voices and love of improvisation.

Melbourne Recital Centre 2015 Great Romantics Competition winner Aaron Liu performs a program of Russian masterpieces including works by Tchaikovsky, Balakirev and Mussorgsky. Mily Balakirev’s transcription of Glinka’s song, L’Alouette sets the atmosphere for this concert which also includes Tchaikovsky’s Theme and Variations in F and culminates with Mussorgsky’s most famous and greatest piano work, Pictures at an Exhibition. So profound and virtuosic is the composition that it is evocatively symphonic in its wonderful assortment of tone and colour. Ensō String Quartet Ensō String Quartet brings sparkling sonorities and joyous teamwork to the stage. Their first Australian program brings bold flavours, from Argentinian composer Ginastera, featured on the Quartet’s Grammynominated first album as well as Turina’s luscious, Spanish Serenata. In the second program, Spanish music appears again, but this time centuries older, among three compelling transcriptions of Renaissance pieces. The Ensō acknowledges two of the cornerstones of a quartet’s life in Beethoven’s beloved ‘Harp’ Quartet, and in Ravel’s amazing, and only, foray into the form. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Eoin Andersen directs the MSO in a fascinating program of music by Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky and Felix Mendelssohn (his beloved Violin Concerto, with Andersen as soloist). It has been noted that the full title of Strauss’ tone poem Till Eulenspiegel takes almost as long to say as the piece does to perform: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche nach alter Schelmenweise in Rondeauform für grosses Orchester gesetz (Till Eulenspiegel’s merry pranks, after the old rogue’s tale, set for large orchestra in rondo-form). The version of the work which will be heard in this performance is arranged for chamber orchestra by Australian composer Brett Dean. Opening the program is Strauss’ Serenade for 13 wind instruments, written when he was just 17. And at nine minutes, it is the soul of brevity. Paying homage to Russia and France, two countries where social, political and economic unrest fuelled great artistic creation, Tasmania’s Huon Quartet weaves a thrilling program around two ‘revolutionary’ works by string quartet masters Shostakovich and Ravel. His passionate advocacy of new music is on its own a heroic legacy, premiering important new works by Australian composers and championing Toru Takemitsu, John Cage and Iannis Xenakis. He is also a renowned interpreter of Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, and has been awarded the Chevalier dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres by the French Republic, the Commander of the Polish Order of Merit and the Companion of the Order of Australia for his services to the music of those nations. Woodward’s interests animate this recital: the poetry of Claude Debussy’s two books of Images takes flight in the pianist’s hands. Demanding a musician who is a virtuoso of both imagination and technique, the Images are some of Debussy’s most visionary compositions, inspired by the mysterious sound of the Javanese gamelan, 18th-century France, japonisme and limpid water. Woodward’s recording of Debussy’s piano music was described as the Independent (UK)

as 'masterful … matchless'. Hearing the music of J.S. Bach led to one of Woodward’s earliest epiphanies: 'I heard Bach and that was the spark that ignited the rocket,' he has said. Bach’s dark and dazzling Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor is a suitably pyrotechnic showcase for Woodward’s artistry. From the next generation of composers Woodward has asked Sydney composer Andrew Batt-Rawden for a new work which receives its world premiere here. Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata is one of the most uncompromising works of the piano repertoire: sprawling, provocative, physically and intellectually difficult. Woodward has been the master of this immense work for decades, giving the first ever performance of it at the BBC Proms in 1972. He revisits it in 2016 for new discoveries and excitement. Liaisons — Re-imaging Sondheim from the Piano American concert pianist Anthony de Mare pays tribute to Stephen Sondheim in a fascinating project. De Mare invited composers from a broad variety of genres from Sondheim's own world of musical theatre to jazz, classical, pop, film and beyond to ‘re-imagine’ a Sondheim song of their choice as a solo piano piece. Contributing re-composers included Steve Reich, Wynton Marsalis, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Fred Hersch, Jason Robert Brown, Ethan Iverson, William Bolcom, Duncan Sheik, Nico Muhly, Eve Beglarian, Gabriel Kahane, Thomas Newman, Jake Heggie and more — in total, 36 composers, ranging in age from 30 to 75 and representing seven countries and 29 Grammy, Pulitzer, Tony, Academy and Emmy Awards. ‘Each of the composers is having a conversation with Mr. Sondheim,’ Anthony de Mare told The New York Times, ‘with his material but also his influence, his musical wit and his craft.’ The acclaimed recording on cult record label ECM featured on dozens of best-of lists in 2015. LOCAL HEROES 2016

Buonamente Giovanni Battista Buonamente may have been a household name, were it not for the loss and destruction of much of the Italian composer’s work over the centuries. A singer and violinist, his vocal works are thought to be of great significance. All that survives of his instrumental music are four of seven books, which contain sonatas, canzonas and dances for violin and continuo. This program features works for two violins, which demonstrate his effortless combination of contrapuntal brilliance with artistic expression. Rachael Beesley, Emma Williams (violin) and Laura Vaughan (lirone, viola da gamba) join Continuo Collective’s Samantha Cohen (theorbo, guitar) and Geoffrey Morris (chitarra attiorbata) to create an exotic 17th-century sound world.

This first pianistic collaboration of the couple Martina and Chris Jarrett is made up of newly-interpreted piano music by Mozart and new works inspired by the mastery of the Austrian composer. Each playing solo, the internationally admired pianist Martina Cukrov-Jarrett reinstalls chosen sonatas and fantasies with energy and warmth, while Chris Jarrett performs his newly commissioned compositions: intellectual and emotional representations of his personal ‘sense of Mozart’. Martina Cukrov-Jarrett's Mozart interpretations are blessed with a high level of emotional intelligence and good taste. The courage and clarity of an individual concept are counterbalanced with an unwavering sense of the epoch. Chris Jarrett's two compositions in honour of Mozart were commissioned by the Italian Mozart Society in 2014.
