Thank You On Saturday 8 February, the Centre celebrated its fifth birthday with a day of free performances, musical activities and fun. Over 5000 music-lovers joined us to hear some of Melbourne’s favourite ensembles inside the Centre and beyond: musicians delighted passengers on the No.1 tram and listeners tuned in to our all-day digital radio broadcast. Amateur musicians jammed with a jazz combo and performed Bach in the Salon. The party culminated with The Big Sing, a community choir of over 1200 voices led by Jonathon Welch, which was webcast to an international audience. The joy radiating from the singers in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall was palpable, a reminder of why we come to places like Melbourne Recital Centre – for the sheer pleasure of making and hearing music in an exquisite space. It was a delight to welcome all our visitors and musicians to the birthday, and I hope to see you again soon. On behalf of the Centre, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for the support of audiences, musicians, donors and business partners over the last five years, and into the future.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is proud to partner with Melbourne Recital Centre. The partnership enables Etihad Airways to enrich the experience of Centre patrons by bringing internationally renowned performers to Melbourne from across the world. This year we are excited to connect the Centre with more cultural hubs than ever before as we expand our global network with eight new destinations including Rome and Zurich. We also look forward to showcasing the quality of our guest experience and our modern Abu Dhabi hub to new, discerning audiences.
Warm regards
Mary Vallentine AO CEO, Melbourne Recital Centre

The Melbourne Recital Centre and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra recapture a time when the world was full of mystery and the ancients ruled the land. The mysteries and majesty of the cosmos and its creation have captivated many composers, especially the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whose work had a profound influence on many of the composers and artists featured in this year’s Metropolis New Music Festival. Composer, pianist and conductor, Olli Mustonen leads three orchestral programs, guest pianist Joanna MacGregor gives a scintillating recital and Australia’s best contemporary musicians present an eclectic selection of performances.
Tapiola
The boundary between myth and reality is easily crossed in dark forests and frozen expanses of the north, where encounters with the spirit-world are a regular danger. This fairy-tale landscape has shaped the work of three Finnish composers. Jean Sibelius, a national and musical hero, invokes the forest god Tapiola. Tapiola is music to be lost in, a journey through ‘thick, dark forests that dream wild dreams, forever secret’. Einojuhani Rautavaara is an heir of Sibelius’ visionary insight into other worlds. The soloist in his spellbinding Violin Concerto spins a thread of sound across a musical landscape that contrasts delicate beauty with elemental force. The baritone in Olli Mustonen’s First Symphony sings of a man taken by Death on a sleigh-ride into an icy eternity. Mustonen says, ‘In the music one can hear some kind of gates opening, revealing new, mysterious worlds’. It is a magical showcase for the MSO lead by the composer.

Frescoes of Dionysius Rodion Shchedrin is one of the most important and interesting composers in Russia today. Shchedrin was anointed as Shostakovich’s successor in the 1970s, going on to bridge the Soviet and post-Soviet eras. His music, however, adheres to no political or musical ideology, but is often concerned with memory, nostalgia, deep emotion, fused with a limitless imagination for new and surprising colours and textures. The ‘Sotto Voce’ concerto was composed for the master cellist Rostropovich. As the concert name implies, the music is full of ‘voices’ – the cello’s, the orchestra’s – wordless, yet eloquent. Marko Ylönen is the impassioned soloist in this 20th century masterpiece. Kristian Winther and the MSO also perform the world premiere of a brand new work by Finnish composer Olli Mustonen, composed especially for the Metropolis Festival.

Concert champêtre Olli Mustonen’s pastoral Concert champêtre was inspired by the colourful history of a country manor house, evoking its courtly residents, Finnish folk life and the awe-inspiring nature around it. It ends with a mysterious and fantastic vision of spirits and shamans in the primeval forests. The unique and uncompromising voice of Joonas Kokkonen made him one of the most distinguished of Finland’s composers. ...durch einen Spiegel… explores the tensile strength of the string section in a kaleidoscopic chain of melody embellished by the otherworldly chimes of a harpsichord, as if seen ‘through a glass darkly’. Young Finnish composer Ilari Kaila’s concerto embraces the cello’s warm and expansive sound. Cellist Marko Ylönen is one of Finland’s leading musicians, and a passionate advocate of his country’s contemporary music.

‘ Joanna MacGregor is one of contemporary music’s great individualists, a uniquely enlivening presence who slices her way through all the barriers she sees as false and limiting.’ The Independent (UK) Joanna MacGregor has forged a brilliant career as a provocateuse at the keyboard and as a festival director. The laterally-thinking performer is known for weaving together surprising and apt pieces into fascinating concerts, delivered with passion, intelligence and brilliant technique. J.S. Bach has been the focus of her recent work: ‘Of course, Bach is the godfather of everything for me, in the mafia sense as well as anything else’ she says. Bach’s daring exploration of the 24 major and minor keys is mystical and joyous, fanciful and rigorous, and the cornerstone of the pianist’s art. Inspired by Bach’s example, Shostakovich pushed the genre into the realms of deeply personal emotion, from bleak despair to giddy exuberance and created an unequivocal 20th century masterpiece. In contrast to Shostakovich’s searing intensity, Gubaidulina’s set of miniature Musical Toys is an evocation of childhood wonder: magical but sometimes a little scary. In the same innocent mode, composers have tried to capture the sounds of birds and nature in their music since music began. From the elegant Baroque cuckoos and nightingales of Daquin and Couperin to the wild and strange blackbirds of Messiaen, MacGregor creates an aviary in the concert hall.

Soul Rebels The fact that they were named after an album by Bob Marley and the Wailers should give you some indication as to where the magnificent Soul Rebels have planted their flag – but make no mistake: these guys pack a thoroughly modern punch. Initially formed when percussionists Derrick Moss and Lumar LeBlanc met as members of Harold Dejan’s Young Olympia Brass Band, they made the timely decision that they wanted to reinterpret the tunes they were hearing on pop radio within the context of old-school New Orleans brass and marching bands.

The Soul Rebels have traversed the line between the old world and the new so well that they’ve ended up collaborating with the likes of Metallica, Green Day, Suzanne Vega, Alabama Shakes and Arcade Fire. They harness their horns and enthusiasm to create a party-like atmosphere when they play live and have been billed on shows with the likes of Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and Cee Lo Green. Legendary American rag The Village Voice describes the Soul Rebels as ‘the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong’, proving that sometimes all it takes is energy, talent and a great idea to create timeless music.

‘ A relentless Nigerian funk-fest.’ The Australian Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti, brings his father’s 16-piece funk-fuelled orchestra, Egypt 80 and the spirit and beats of Africa to the Centre. Hailed for continuing Fela’s musical legacy, Seun Kuti took control of his father’s band Egypt 80 at the age of 14 and has been laying down a potent version of those indestructible rhythms ever since. A number of the current members of the Egypt 80 line-up not only played with Fela, but were participants in Nigeria’s political and social uprising in the early 1980s alongside him. Fans of the Afrobeat movement will be counting down the days until Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 present their electrifying live show and spread their powerful musical message to Australia. INFORMATION

Leading lady of the 1980s folk-music revival
Suzanne Vega ‘ A groundbreaking singer with a talent for a killer line.’ The Independent (UK) With songs such as ‘Tom’s Diner’ and the Grammy-nominated/MTV-award-winning ‘Luka’, ‘Caramel’ (from the movie Cats and Dogs), ‘Solitude Standing’ and ‘Woman On The Tier’ (from the movie Dead Man Walking), Suzanne Vega became the vanguard of a new generation of female singer-songwriters in the 1980s. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, her contemporary folk music has inspired a generation of female singer-songwriters such as KT Tunstall, Tracy Chapman and Alanis Morissette. A masterful storyteller, her distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice finds poetry in the everyday. Notably understated, often cerebral but also streetwise, her lyrics invite multiple interpretations.
Suzanne Vega
Suzanne Vega’s work is immediately recognisable, distinct and thoughtful, and as creative and musical now as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 20 years ago. Vega is an artist who continues to surprise. In 2006, she became the first major recording artist to perform live in avatar form within the virtual world Second Life. She has also dedicated much of her time and energy to charitable causes, notably Amnesty International, Casa Alianza, and the Save Darfur Coalition.

The Little Match Girl Passion Hans Christian Andersen’s renowned fable & a personal passion The Song Company combines a near-forgotten historic masterpiece with a recent Pulitzer Prize-winning score in a poignant program which marks the Easter season. David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion sets Hans Christian Andersen’s renowned fable as a highly personal passion, with its incorporation of biblical texts and crowd responses from Bach’s St Matthew Passion. This melancholic pairing of Demantius’ pathos and Lang’s sobering narrative takes audiences to the heart of the Easter sacrifice. The Song Company is one of Australia’s leading vocal ensembles. Since their formation in 1984, they have developed under the leadership of Artistic Director Roland Peelman. Sutherland Trio brings together the unique talent of three of Australia’s most distinguished musicians: Caroline Almonte (piano), Elizabeth Sellars (violin) and Molly Kadarauch (cello). In 2014, the Trio explores music inspired by great literature and art. Decadent, artistic and derived from Oscar Wilde’s poem of the same name, Britta Byström’s Swedish masterpiece the Symphony in Yellow opens the program. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s terrifying tale of mystery, Danish composer Bent Sørensen’s Masque of Red Death is dramatic and evocative. To conclude, the Trio performs Ravel’s much-loved Piano Trio in A minor, featured in French director Claude Sautet’s film of love, lust and obsession, Un Coeur en Hiver (A Heart in Winter).

Jerusalem Jordi Savall & Hespèrion XXI A grand panorama of 3000 years of life and music in the holy city. A haunting prayer for peace.
Jordi Savall
‘ Jordi Savall is one of Early Music’s great souls.’ The Boston Globe (US) Jordi Savall is a true citizen of the world, voyaging in time and space from the splendours of Baroque Europe to the glories of Ancient Greece. With his blend of scholarship and poetry, Savall has reconstructed not only the music of these places, but given a glimpse into the daily lives and souls of their people. His concerts are illuminating, moving and joyous experiences that haunt you long after the last note is played. Whether playing his exquisite viola da gamba alone, or surrounded by his friends, Savall creates an atmosphere of rapt intimacy that draws you to the edge of your seat.
Jerusalem is an epic panorama of more than 3000 years of history. The holy city has been home to a polyglot Jewish, Christian and Muslim community for centuries, and has been called by some of them ‘The City of Earthly and Heavenly Peace’. Savall traces the history of the city and its inhabitants from the fall of the Walls of Jericho circa 1200 BCE to the 20th Century. Invasions, pilgrimages, crusades, war and the centuries of harmonious coexistence have left their testament in the music of Jerusalem. Joined by an equally diverse community of musicians from the Middle East and Europe, Savall and his ensemble weave a gorgeous tapestry of life in Jerusalem, culminating in an eloquent plea for peace. At the end of the three millennia of music, the voices of all the nations join in one song common to each of their cultures.

One of Australia’s leading pianists, Kristian MOOD INDIGO Chong teams up with two of Australia’s foremost violinists, Sophie Rowell and Natsuko Yoshimoto to celebrate Beethoven’s grand legacy, cemented by the composer’s sonatas for piano and violin. Juxtaposing two of Beethoven’s A-major sonatas for piano and with David Jones violin with Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne from his delicious ballet Pulcinella, this program showcases the nexus between Beethoven’s masterful approach and evolution of the form in the 20th century. The delightful innocence of Beethoven’s early Op.12 No.2 Sonata contrasts with the fire and determination of the Krezuter Sonata, considered the greatest of all 10 sonatas of the composer’s output and one of the pinnacles of the repertoire.

Venturing to The New World, the ensemble explores the work of composers with a connection to the United States of America. Pianist and composer Amy Beach (often referred to as Mrs. H.H.A. Beach), was the first successful American female musician, and her late piano trio showcases her lush Romantic voice. Despite the rhythmic energy and mild dissonance, the first piano trio of Robert Muczynski is very classical in its nature and the ever-popular Dumky Trio of Antonin Dvořák was published while Dvořák was in the United States.

Speechless
Australian String Quartet In the days of Mozart and Haydn, chamberscale reductions of symphonies and masses gave musicians who couldn’t assemble an entire orchestra and choir together, the opportunity to play and perform larger masterpieces in their own homes. After Mozart’s death, Peter Lichtenthal distilled his idol’s Requiem into a wordless, pristine string quartet masterwork, transforming it from profoundly religious into a beautiful, abstract work of art.
Berg’s Lyric Suite is a similar song without words; there are quotes from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde and Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, and the last movement is a secret wordless setting of a poem by Baudelaire. It’s a work borne of a doomed love affair, set against the backdrop of a fin de siècle Vienna. At the heart of any Schubert work is song, and it is with his frantically scurrying and carefree singing Quartettsatz that the Quartet open this program; an unfinished work that somehow feels as if nothing more could be said.

Charles Lloyd
Larry Carlton
Charles Lloyd Sky Trio
Larry Carlton Quartet
Multi-instrumentalist and titan of the tenor saxophone, Charles Lloyd emerged in the 60s, leading one of the all-time great quartets whose crossover recordings Forest Flower and Dream Weaver introduced Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Cecil McBee to the world and established Lloyd as an international star. A perpetual seeker, Lloyd’s music has continued to evolve over the past half century, drawing together diverse music styles from around the globe with seamless confluence, enormous emotional range and an adventurous spirit. Awarded the 2013 Miles Davis Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival for his contribution to the art form, Lloyd remains at the pinnacle of his artistic powers. Lloyd makes a welcome return to the Festival to reveal his most recent sonic explorations with drummer Eric Harland and bassist Reuben Rogers. Together these fearless, inventive and distinctive musicians form one of the most exciting trios in contemporary jazz.
Four-time Grammy winner, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘Titan of Tone’ and legendary guitar great, Larry Carlton is one of the most influential, prolific and original guitarists in the industry. With a solo career spanning three decades and long associations with iconic supergroups The Crusaders, Fourplay and Stanley Clark and Friends, Larry Carlton has also appeared on over a thousand recordings, collaborating with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Sammy Davis Jr. As well as winning a Grammy for his memorable playing on the Hill Street Blues theme, Rolling Stone declared his masterful work on Steely Dan’s Kid Charlemagne one of the greatest rock guitar solos of all time. Combining his roots in blues and jazz with a crossover pop rock sensibility, Carlton’s unmistakable sound is marked by his signature warm tone, bright melodies and soulful guitar solos.

Mary Stallings
Joshua Redman Quartet
Mary Stallings
Joshua Redman Quartet
Be swept away by the supremely soulful stylings of Mary Stallings, hailed by The New York Times as ‘the best jazz singer alive today’. Debuting professionally before the age of 10 in a family gospel group, Stallings toured and recorded throughout the 50s and 60s with heavyweights such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Cannonball Adderley, and the Count Basie Orchestra. After a long hiatus, she stepped back into the spotlight in the early 80s, bringing a new emotional depth to her craft. With her supple sense of swing, blues-inflected phrasing, and unique gift for interpretation, Stallings has earned widespread praise as ‘the consummate jazz singer’ (JazzTimes) and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 San Francisco Jazz Festival Gala. Don’t miss this true jazz great as she blends the old with the new, from hard-swinging standards to breathtaking ballads.
Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists of his generation, widely considered the new giant of the tenor saxophone. Possessing ‘a profound grasp of the tradition and the imagination to transform it’ (The Guardian), Redman redefines the boundaries of modern jazz with his virtuosic technique, expansive tone and adventurous spirit. A regular collaborator with some of today’s most important and influential artists, from Metheny to Mehldau, Blade to McBride, the double Grammy-nominated Redman has consistently garnered top honours in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. His longstanding all-star quartet features pianist Aaron Goldberg – described by Wynton Marsalis as ‘a modern improviser of great clarity, finesse, and dexterity’ – the exuberantly fluent bassist Reuben Rogers, and Gregory Hutchinson, hailed by Jazz Magazine as ‘the drummer of his generation’.

Naturally 7
After two sold out concerts in 2011, N7 return with a brand new live show launching their 2014 CD release Hidden in Plain Sight. Captivating a broad, cross-generational audience with their irresistible mix of Bronx street cred’ and showmanship, N7 are an R & B/Urban/Soul phenomenon that must be seen-to-be-believed. Taking a cappella to the next level in a style they dub ‘vocal play’, astonishingly they pump out not just the melodies and harmonies, but the sounds of drums, guitars, horns, strings, turntables and beats – using nothing but the human voice. Covering a wide mix of music, N7’s performances include sensational interpretations of pop classics by iconic groups such as The Beatles, Seals & Crofts, Coldplay and Queen, music born out of collaborations with jazz luminaires Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and star rapper Ludacris, alongside self-penned hits.
On the back of an electrifying European arena tour sharing the bill with Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) and The Jacksons, and guesting with Michael Bublé and Coldplay, N7 are primed to deliver a show which was described by The Sunday Times as ‘nothing short of mind-blowing’. The viola’s exquisite character shines in powerful works played by a master.
Great Performers 2014
Maxim Rysanov The viola’s eloquent voice is rarely heard on its own, but in Maxim Rysanov’s hands, this most subtle and expressive of instruments takes centre-stage. The award-winning Ukrainian musician took up the viola because there weren’t many players – a strategy which has made him one of the most in-demand musicians in the business. It helps that he is also a player of the highest calibre, as Melbourne audiences discovered when he appeared with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra at the Centre in 2011. Dynamic and charismatic, Rysanov is the best possible advocate for his soulful instrument. Violists generally have to borrow their repertoire from other instruments, picking the best of the violin and cello works to transcribe. Rysanov has chosen two archetypal Romantic works to demonstrate the viola’s warm and lyrical qualities. Schubert’s compact Sonatina packs a great deal of charming song into just 15 minutes, with more than a nod towards Mozart.
Maxim Rysanov
‘ This amazing young artist looks like giving the viola’s profile a definite boost.’ The Telegraph (UK) The kaleidoscopic drama of Schumann’s A minor violin sonata translates perfectly to the viola, and to a player ready to investigate the emotional complexities of the piece. What musician could resist the hummable melodies of Prokofiev’s beloved Romeo and Juliet? An inventive arrangement for viola and piano shows off the instrument’s suave brilliance. Shostakovich’s viola sonata is a masterpiece that deserves a wider audience. Completed a month before Shostakovich’s death, the sonata has the serene resignation and simplicity of the last sad words of a troubled life.

American Songbook Series
The Thing About Love When Caroline was growing up in Paris, American music was played constantly on the radio. It became a backdrop to daily life in the French capital and inspired a young Caroline to pursue her passion and become a jazz singer. Many years later, with a successful international career as a jazz and cabaret artist, Caroline returns to her American musical influences in this specially devised concert for Melbourne Recital Centre. Caroline will give her unique interpretations of American songwriters including Patti Smith, Lou Reed and, of course, France’s adopted own great American artiste Nina Simone. With Caroline being French, of course, love is the constant, ever entrancing muse and theme for these concerts. Star Chorale perform Carl Orff’s
Carmina Burana Carl Orff composed Carmina Burana in 1937 using Latin and German poems from the 12th and 13th century. The poems celebrated wine and life and parodied the clergy. Carmina Burana has been described as a scenic cantata opening and closing with relatively primitive rhythmic lament about the arbitrariness of fortune. The middle section celebrates life, love and drinking. The latter sung by the male voices. Choirs of women and children bring softer delights before the closing reminder of fate.

The Callaway Sisters in
Sibling Revelry
‘Their voices blend and soar majestically like eagles!’ The New York Observer ‘Truly, sisterhood is beautiful.’ New York Magazine ‘When their strikingly different but equally splendid voices harmonize, Sibling Revelry becomes a thrilling display of vocal prowess.’ The New York Times When Broadway’s Liz Callaway and cabaret’s Ann Hampton Callaway blend their voices together in perfect harmony, the sound is, simply put, exquisite. Ann’s dark, husky and jazz-flavored sound is the perfect complement for Liz’s clear bell tones in their award-winning acclaimed cabaret act, Sibling Revelry. This dynamic duo from Chicago proves they’re one singular sensation, singing show tunes, jazz and pop.
