Individually, Alica Sara Ott and Francesco Tristano are two of their generation’s brightest young stars. Together, they are a pianistic dream team. At 24, Ott already has major repertoire on record and a busy international schedule, giving performances that critics call ‘elegant’, ‘vibrant’ and ‘superbly accomplished’. Tristano is equally at home with electronic dance music as he is with Bach, with an openminded approach to music-making that has won over fans of techno and classical music alike. The combination of the two promises a meeting of strong minds and spectacular playing that is already generating buzz. GREAT PERFORMERS 2014
Alisa Weilerstein A Cello Alone ‘Passionate, direct and powerful – the solo cello of Alisa Weilerstein.’
Alisa Weilerstein makes an unforgettable impression. The immense, impassioned sound she creates and her body and soul commitment to the music have astonished audiences around the world. Her recent electrifying performance of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra left audiences stunned and calling for more. Still in her early-30s, Weilerstein already has a stellar career, been the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur ‘Genius’ fellowship, and recorded the Elgar Cello Concerto under the authoritative baton of Daniel Barenboim, in addition to an intense concert schedule. After convincing her parents to buy her a cello at the age of four, she made her public concert debut six months later, her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at 13 and her Carnegie Hall debut two years later. Weilerstein has performed with Australian orchestras several times, but this is your first chance to hear her solo. Bach’s C major cello suite demonstrates Weilerstein’s gift for shaping a single line into a thing of dancing grace, while Kodály’s richly-textured masterpiece gives the cellist scope to showcase her intensity, virtuosity and expressive gifts. Young guitarist/composer Brett Thompson was the inaugural recipient of the Australian Art Orchestra’s Young Artist in Residence program and during a six-month period explored meeting-points between composition and improvisation with the AAO’s brilliant musicians. Now in its 20th year the AAO’s work constantly seeks to stretch genres and break down the barriers separating disciplines, forms and cultures. INFORMATION

Never Say Farewell
Chris Stout & Catriona McKay ‘Emotional music of stark beauty using vulnerable tactile sounds.’
The story of the Farewell Symphony is the stuff of musical legend. Frustrated with Prince Nikolaus Esterházy’s drawn-out stay at his summer palace, Haydn composed a fiery new symphony with a strong musical hint: in the final movement, the musicians gradually left the stage, until only two remained. The Prince got the message: the court returned to the city the very next day. Young bassoonist Jack Schiller is a remarkable talent whose passionate musicality has already won him many fans. He joins the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra for this concert to perform Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto, a rarely-heard gem with which he recently made his debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Chris Stout and Catriona McKay have performed, explored and sculpted their musical identities together for almost 20 years. Through a respect for tradition and a spirit of experimentation they continue to evolve and create a sound sensation and style operating at a rarefied level of expertise. The result is a dynamic and adventurous sound that retains the identity of their traditions yet allows the music to have a freedom and connection to other musical styles they are drawn to. 'Mozart's delightful flute concerto' Jean-Philippe Rameau was one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era. His Les Indes galantes, termed an opéra-ballet, is a delicious song and dance spectacle exhibiting the French flair for colour and movement. Rameau’s French compatriots Jean Baptiste Lully and Cécile Chaminade add to this rich musical bouillabaisse with works that will transport you to continental Europe. Chaminade’s Concertino for flute and orchestra is considered fiendishly difficult with a highly decorative solo part that is quite demanding for the soloist and Mozart’s flute concerto with its unassuming grace, imaginative workmanship and expressive power is equally challenging. Mozart exhibited a special affinity with the woodwind family, writing prolifically for the instruments throughout his lifetime. The G–major Concerto is a stand-out work with its delectable melody and elegance.

Three masterpieces, from arguably the three greatest composers for the string quartet performed by the Australian String Quartet. Haydn’s Op.77, No.1 is the grand, crowning achievement of a life inventing, exploring and perfecting the genre. Written 10 years later, in Beethoven’s middle period, the Serioso quartet is all fire and crystal whilst remaining compositionally one of the strictest and most tightly structured works he ever wrote. Tognetti in Recital Tognetti and Osborne: A rare and intimate recital Pianist Steven Osborne’s recent concerts with the Australian Chamber Orchestra were hailed as ‘the most thrilling musical memory of the entire 2012 season’ (The Australian), ‘an evening of pure delight’ (West Australian) and ‘a ripsnorter of a performance’ (News Local) so it’s no surprise Richard Tognetti chose Osborne to partner in this rare and intimate recital. Together they perform three violin sonatas; Prokofiev’s virtuosic and lyrical showpiece, Debussy’s powerful last-ever completed work, and the final and most reflective of Beethoven’s violin sonatas. The concert opens with Prokofiev’s lyrical and graceful melodies and Fratres, described by Tognetti as ‘Arvo Pärt at his instrumental best.’

GREAT PERFORMERS 2014
Nicolas Hodges Debussy: The 12 Études Destination Sweden 17th-century Sweden was one of Europe’s great powers, and the region’s grandeur and splendour are reflected in its rich musical heritage. Specially programmed by celebrated lutenist Tommie Andersson, Ludovico’s Band embarks on a historical quest, tracing the music of three generations of the Düben family – a great musical dynasty of composers and kapellmeisters. The Swedish celebration continues with the Australian premiere of unpublished trio sonatas of Johan Helmich Roman, regarded as the ‘Father of Swedish Music’, and an accompanying treasure trove of Swedish folk music, including sounds from the province of Dalarna, certain to make you want to dance the Polska.

Debussy said that his 12 studies were only for pianists with ‘remarkable hands’. Fortunately, Nicolas Hodges possesses them. These late masterpieces are a distillation of Debussy’s revolutionary techniques, demanding that pianists transcend their instrument and themselves to create unimagined sonorities. They are also examples of Debussy’s sly wit and pop cultural interests: full of waltzes, jazz, Spanish guitars and parody. In short, they’re the perfect vehicles for a pianist like Nicolas Hodges, whose own wide-ranging tastes encompass everything from Beethoven to brand new works, often in the same concert. Hodges has stunned audiences with his skill and his ability to communicate in the most challenging of new music and his insights into the core piano repertoire. Common to all his performances is a desire to cross centuries
and continents to illuminate old and new repertoire with surprising juxtapositions demonstrating even more surprising parities. In this case, it is the late works of Beethoven and Debussy. The late sonatas of Beethoven are a radical redefinition of the form: freewheeling, philosophical and sublime, they are endlessly fascinating musical mazes. In the second movement of the Op.111 Sonata Beethoven transcends time itself, with a set of celestial variations that resound into infinity. Beethoven regarded his sketch-like Six Bagatelles, Op.126 as the best he had written, and there are tantalising hints of his most innovative works. Hiding behind the deadpan facade of Debussy’s Études are worlds of colour and invention as imaginative as anything he ever wrote, so that even as pianists are perfecting their octaves, they are learning how to dream.

Flinders Quartet is joined by prolific Australian pianist and composer Paul Grabowsky and Genevieve Lacey on recorder for a program inspired by the art of literature. The Quartet premiere a newly commissioned work by Grabowsky based on Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, and pair it with Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor, which uses themes from his previous compositions based on the play, Rosamunde. Using Bach’s two part inventions as a starting point, Grabowsky then performs the original solo piano score, followed by Kats-Chernin’s popular Re-Inventions for recorder and string quartet. Grabowsky then concludes with his intriguing musical commentary on each reinvention – by reinventing the aforementioned Re-Inventions.

Trio Anima Mundi
In 2014, Trio Anima Mundi explores geographical and historical ideas from the 19th and 20th centuries. Both Camille Saint-Saëns and Lili Boulanger competed for the coveted Prix de Rome at various stages of their careers, but it was only Boulanger who won the title in 1913 at the age of 19. Her early demise at the age of 24 resulted in a relatively small output and her Deux pièces en trio was one of her last works. In contrast, the first piano trio of Saint-Saëns was written when the composer was 28 years of age.

The Observer writes: ‘Annelies (Anne) Frank has a permanent place in history as the Jewish schoolgirl whose diary of her years hiding from the Nazis makes unbearable reading when we know her fate at Bergen-Belsen. Melanie Challenger has fashioned an elegiac libretto from its poetic pages which James Whitbourn sets with such tender respect it’s almost impossible to hear without tears.’ Ensemble Liaison is joined by renowned Australian soprano Greta Bradman and Extrinsic (former members of the Choir of Trinity College, Melbourne), directed by Michael Leighton Jones for this special concert.

A Secret Life Story on 4 Strings The legendary Martin Feng ventures beyond China for the first time. Blending rock, jazz and traditional Chinese music, he has defied stereotype. He has captivated audiences with his virtuosity, eclectic repertoire, and relentless quest to redefine the boundaries of Chinese and Western music. Music runs in Feng’s family. Growing up in Northeast China, Martin was tutored by his father, Shaoxian Feng, the leading exponent of the exquisitely expressive yueqin (a traditional Chinese lute). Since 1978, Feng has been a solo performer and principal with the National Chinese Orchestra, and founding member of the first ever Chinese rock band ‘White Angels’ and becoming proficient in electric guitar. In addition to guitar, he plays many traditional Chinese instruments. A Secret Life Story on 4 Strings is Martin’s journey from being a young man in exile to
his determination to defy conventions and embrace Western contemporary forms. Martin explores being an individual in his home country, where political and social constraints define identity. With his band, Martin’s program combines Chinese and western musical forms, reflecting how jazz, rock and world music influences were introduced to traditional Chinese music, in an inspiring story of meeting of very different sounds and traditions. For over 24 years, Joe Henry has left a unique imprint on American music. His poetic songs incorporate a broad swathe of American musical styles – rock, jazz, soul, folk-imbued blues and alt-country stylings. With his growling, soul-inflected vocals and tales of a shrewdly observed America, Henry is often likened to Tom Waits. A songwriter with a deeply reflective point of view, the warring forces of romance and chaos in his songs give his live shows an unforgettable emotional impact. In this solo Australian tour Joe will be launching his 13th studio album Invisible Hour and will be performing new acoustic songs alongside rarely performed older material. One of Australia’s leading pianists, Kristian Chong teams up with one of Australia’s foremost violinists, Natsuko Yoshimoto for a lively program that showcases the wit, complexity and determination of Beethoven’s compositional creativity with two of the composer’s most iconic sonatas for piano and violin. The formidable and thrilling C minor Sonata (nicknamed the Eroica) is complemented by the striking Op.12 No.3 Sonata, and is contrasted with Debussy’s whimsical and colourful sonata for violin and piano. Adelaide Chamber Singers Monteverdi’s creative fire burns brightest in his madrigals. Full of passion and musical invention, they are the pinnacle of an intimate yet dramatic musical genre that eventually led to the creation of opera. Award-winning Adelaide Chamber Singers (‘Grand Prix’ Musica Sacra a Roma 2013, “Choir of the World at Llangollen 2013”) presents Monteverdi’s Fire – a music-theatre presentation of Monteverdi’s complete Sixth Book of Madrigals devised by opera director Andy Packer and conductor Carl Crossin.
