WELCOME TO SEASON 2019 Our 2019 Season brings you stories filled with adventure, love, friendship, discovery and drama. We have curated a year of international hits like Photograph 51 and Heisenberg, reimagined Australian classics including Storm Boy and Così, and brilliant new writing such as Black is the New White, assembling some of the country’s best creative talents to bring them to life. In 2019, MTC celebrates the power of storytelling on an incredible scale with a raft of challenging, brilliant and entertaining works in another exciting year of theatre. Making theatre relevant to 21st Century Australia is the lifeblood of MTC, and in 2019 we are thrilled to present six stunning works by Australian writers, including the first new play from our landmark NEXT STAGE Writers' Program, Golden Shield. This bold new work is an urgent legal drama by the astounding Anchuli Felicia King and is destined to be a hit. We couldn’t be prouder to see our first NEXT STAGE production take to the stage. We open the season with the legendary Miriam Margolyes starring in the contemporary classic The Lady in the Van and we close with musical theatre icon, Caroline O’Connor, in Australia’s first professional staging of the Tony Awardwinning Kander & Ebb musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman. And in a coup for MTC audiences, the illustrious Simon Phillips will direct a new staging of the Oscar-winning film and West End hit, Shakespeare in Love.

In 1974 Alan Bennett befriended Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric, cantankerous and rather smelly old lady. She ‘temporarily’ parked her dilapidated van outside Bennett’s London home – and stayed for 15 years. The Lady in the Van is a mostly true story of the fascinating relationship between the award-winning British writer and his long-term guest. Was she a fugitive on the run? A talented pianist? A nun? Or just an old lady struggling with mental health and homelessness? Touching, uplifting and heartbreakingly funny, The Lady in the Van is classic Alan Bennett. Share the fondness and frustrations of the legendary writer as he navigates life with a very peculiar tenant in this moving, bittersweet comedy. Best-known for the celebrated 2015 film starring Maggie Smith, this incredible new stage production stars international icon Miriam Margolyes (I’ll Eat You Last), directed by Dean Bryant (An Ideal Husband).

Hollywood bombshell Mae West built her career on lookin’ good – walkin’ the walk and talkin’ the talk – while legendary photographer Diane Arbus was famous for finding beauty in the everyday. When Diane turns up at Mae’s glistening LA apartment in 1964 to take her portrait, tensions quickly flare. Mae’s version of herself is very different to the one Diane wants to catch on film. But whose version wins out when a master of illusion meets a master of truth? Drawing on actual events, award-winning Australian playwright Stephen Sewell imagines what might have transpired between these two extraordinary women, creating a powerful portrait of beauty, sexuality, wildness and longing. Melita Jurisic (The House of Bernarda Alba) takes on the role of the irrepressible Mae West, with Diana Glenn (The Slap) as Diane Arbus in this World Premiere production, directed by MTC's 2018 Helpmann Awardwinning Associate Director Sarah Goodes (The Children).

Brooklyn dockworker Eddie Carbone and his wife Beatrice agree to take in two Sicilian relatives – illegal immigrants trying to find work. Hardworking Marco is sending money home to his wife and sick children. Rodolpho is chasing the American dream, but finds being different makes him an outsider. When Rodolpho falls for Eddie’s niece Catherine, the protective uncle must confront his own feelings and his jealous mistrust threatens to expose an unspeakable secret. Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece A View from the Bridge confronts the American dream in a stripped-back, muscular drama that simmers with tension and explodes with passion. We might be in 1950s Brooklyn, but the themes of family, loyalty, immigration and justice are as relevant for contemporary Australia as ever before.
Contains sexual references, violence and mature themes
Since it first premiered in 1955, A View from the Bridge has electrified audiences around the world. In the hands of award-winning director Iain Sinclair (The Beast), whose 2017 Sydney staging for Red Line Productions created a chorus of critical acclaim, this brand new production promises to be a riveting and emotionally-charged night at the theatre, featuring Ivan Donato (Richard III) and Daniela Farinacci (Lantana).

It’s 1971 Australia and outside a nation is protesting the war in Vietnam. Inside, a cast of complete amateurs are preparing for a performance of Mozart’s famous comic opera, Così Fan Tutte, even though no-one can sing, act or speak Italian. Its aspiring young director, Lewis, has just finished drama school and his first directing gig is at a psychiatric facility. What could possibly go wrong? Welcome to the mayhem of Louis Nowra’s Così. A darkly funny and deeply moving ensemble piece, Così has occupied a special place in the hearts of Australians since Toni Collette, Ben Mendelsohn and Barry Otto starred in the acclaimed 1996 film. With its motley crew of loveable characters, Così offers a poignant reminder of the transformative power of music and performance, and how art can make us soar – even if just for a moment. Sarah Goodes (A Doll's House, Part 2) directs this warm-hearted, laugh-outloud comedy classic with a stellar cast including the star of ABC’s Cleverman series, Hunter Page-Lochard, Esther Hannaford, fresh from her acclaimed role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and MTC favourite Katherine Tonkin (Three Little Words).

At a bustling London train station, 42-year-old American, Georgie, kisses the neck of a much older Englishman, Alex. This electric encounter thrusts two perfect strangers into a fascinating and unlikely relationship, part friendship, part love-affair. But is Georgie really all she seems? Simon Stephens astounded audiences with his remarkable The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2018. Now, this Tony Award-winning playwright is back with an intimate and life-affirming romantic comedy. The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle helped redefine the world of physics, but Stephens is less concerned with quantum mechanics than with the atomic uncertainty of the human heart. With wit and dry humour, Heisenberg asks us to take a chance on love and embrace the magic of the unknown. Star of stage and screen, Kat Stewart (Offspring), will shine as the quirky, freespirited Georgie with acclaimed director Tom Healey (The Spook) making his debut with MTC for this Australian Premiere.

In a wild and remote area of coastline on South Australia's Coorong, Storm Boy and his reclusive father live in a secluded shack, hidden away from the harsh realities of city life. After befriending a local Ngarrindjeri man, Storm Boy discovers three orphaned pelican chicks and decides to take them in. What follows is a remarkable journey of discovery that will change his life forever. This much-loved story has enthralled generations of Australians both on the page and on screen. Now, Colin Thiele’s heart-warming classic Storm Boy is brought to life on stage in a theatrical event filled with unforgettable characters and a collection of astonishing life-size puppets by Dead Puppet Society. With epic scope and scale, this stunning Australian story is realised in a production that evokes the fragile wilderness of Storm Boy’s world. Adapted by Tom Holloway (Double Indemnity), this powerful new production featuring John Batchelor (Red Dog) and Tony Briggs (Cleverman) is directed by Sam Strong, who will again bring his magic to another timeless coming-of-age story, as he did with MTC's Helpmann Award-winning Jasper Jones.

Young Will Shakespeare has a bad case of writer’s block and desperately needs a muse. His new comedy, Romeo and Ethel the Pirate’s Daughter, is less than inspired and he’s running out of time to deliver his next masterpiece. That is, until he meets Viola, and a real-life Romeo and Juliet story starts to take hold. But Viola has a secret, and this damned Romeo play is turning out to be nothing like the comedy the Queen demanded. Shakespeare in Love won seven Oscars in 1998 when Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes stole our hearts on screen. Now, Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman’s Academy Award-winning script has been transformed by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) into a side-splitting stage comedy with a stirring love story at its heart.
Originally produced on the West End by Disney Theatrical Productions & Sonia Friedman Productions, directed by Declan Donnellan, and designed by Nick Ormerod.
In a coup for MTC, this Australian Premiere production from acclaimed director Simon Phillips (Muriel's Wedding the Musical) has been specially licensed by Disney Theatrical Productions. Don’t miss this unique theatrical event, which guarantees a rollicking night of romance and backstage fun, with lavish musical accompaniment.

It’s 2006 and less than 10% of China is online. The Chinese government looks to Silicon Valley to protect their citizens from the unfiltered chaos of the internet, resulting in the construction of an epic firewall called the Golden Shield. With American companies actively working to build it – stifling political debate in the process – are they responsible, or just doing good business? If they can be prosecuted for working against the promotion of democracy, should they? And if dissidents start disappearing, who should be put on trial? With interweaving storylines from across the globe, Golden Shield is an urgent legal drama that explores the personal and political ramifications of corporate greed in the global economy. A trail-blazer of contemporary theatre, Anchuli Felicia King finds fascination in the space where technology and tradition meet for this piercing, funny and extremely timely new play. This World Premiere production will be directed by Sarah Goodes (Switzerland), featuring Nicholas Bell (North by Northwest), Jing-Xuan Chan (Hungry Ghosts), Josh McConville (The Sublime) and Yuchen Wang (Little Emperors).

Charlotte Gibson is a lawyer with a brilliant career ahead of her. As her father Ray says, she could be the next female Indigenous Waleed Aly. But she has other ideas. First of all, it’s Christmas. Second of all, she’s in love. The thing is, her fiancé, Francis Smith, is not what her family expected – he’s unemployed, he’s an experimental composer… and he’s white! When the families come together at the Gibson’s ritzy holiday home, the stage is set for a riotously funny struggle for dominance where insults fly, secrets come flooding out and sacred cows of all descriptions are mercilessly skewered. It’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, crossed with Meet The Fockers. Following two sell-out seasons at Sydney Theatre Company, Black is the New White is the hit new Australian comedy set to delight Melbourne audiences. Award-winning writer and TV personality Nakkiah Lui shows why she is one of this country’s most incisive comedy writers, with a home-grown satire that is both subversive and thoroughly entertaining. STC Associate Director Paige Rattray directs an array of brilliant, eccentric, loveable characters in this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy.

Rosalind Franklin was one of the great scientists of the 20th Century. In 1952 she used X-ray diffraction photography to examine the intricate structure of DNA, but her trail-blazing work was never recognised. The scientific establishment at King’s College London simply could not cope with her genius, her self-confidence or her stern disregard for authority. Threatened by her brilliance, Franklin’s rivals scandalously stole her research and were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the double helix. A massive hit on the West End, Anna Ziegler’s Photograph 51 relives the chase to find ‘the secret of life’ amidst all the inherent ambition, sexism and isolation of the 1950s, while shining a spotlight on an unsung hero. This intriguing new play is a moving portrait of a brilliant British scientist, and a delicate exploration of what is sacrificed in the pursuit of science, love and a place in history. MTC favourite Nadine Garner (The Doctor Blake Mysteries) returns to the stage as the fiercely independent Rosalind Franklin, directed by Pamela Rabe (Jumpy) for this Australian Premiere production.

In a dark South American prison, two very different men share a small cell. Valentin is a Marxist revolutionary who refuses to betray his comrades. Molina is a gay window dresser who distracts himself by escaping to a fantasy world of movies starring the glamorous diva, Aurora. Valentin can't stand Molina’s cinematic fantasies and so draws a line on the floor to stop Molina from coming near him. Surely that will keep them apart. From Kander & Ebb, the team behind smash-hit shows Chicago and Cabaret, comes a provocative tale of love, imagination, and the friendship that develops when humanity is pushed to its limits. It’s a powerful and emotive story made famous by the original novel and an Oscar-winning film, brought to life here as a dazzling major musical production for the first time ever in Australia. Musical legend Caroline O’Connor (Bombshells) returns to MTC to take on the role of exotic film goddess, Aurora, in a show that’s set to sizzle and surprise, directed by Helpmann Award-winner Dean Bryant (Sweet Charity).

Connor is 16 and angry. He doesn’t know why. Lately everything and everyone is annoying him. He’s slamming doors, flipping desks and always fighting. But, when he takes his rage one step too far, his parents decide to leave him in the forest for a week, alone. That should sort him out. Until he meets Lotte – also 16, also angry, but maybe just the friend Connor needs. As unpredictable as Connor himself, The Violent Outburst That Drew Me To You tackles the ticking time bomb of adolescence with humour and heart. Multi-award-winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer is renowned internationally as a leading figure in theatre for young people. SUPPORT M TC
As I look through these pages, exploring the thrill and drama of Season 2019, I am excited by the year ahead. Each year the team at MTC creates an extraordinary world for us to step into. Whether it be experiencing new works from Australian writers, the latest hit plays from London’s West End, or a classic text with a modern interpretation from a new director – the shared love of the theatre binds us all. As Chair of the MTC Foundation, an MTC Board Member and a Donor, it is my great privilege to play a part in creating these moments for hundreds of thousands of theatre lovers each year. When I see the joy and inspiration these MTC moments bring, it fuels my passion to ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience live storytelling at its best. I know from speaking to many of you over the years this is your goal as well. Every donation, be it big or small, plays an essential role in providing a season of outstanding, world-class theatre for Victorian audiences from ages nine to ninety, both in the city and in our regions. At Melbourne Theatre Company, our stories begin with you. When you donate to MTC, you support a season of work that helps us tell these stories. A season that puts a spotlight on the outstanding craftsmanship, dedication and technical expertise of the MTC family working behind-the-scenes, from scenic artists to carpenters, wig makers, costume designers, stage management and production. When you donate to MTC, you enable moments of learning, wonderment and discovery. Our awardwinning Education program provides accessible theatre experiences for students and young people, reaching out into regional Victoria and inspiring the next generation of theatre-goers and
makers. In the spirit of equality and access, our Women in Theatre program will continue in 2019, with participants joining the 57 alumni who have leveraged the skills and industry connections of this program to progress their careers in the arts, and battle gender inequality within the cultural sector. MTC Donors create moments that shape the future of Australian theatre. Our NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program is already supporting 20 writers, with more commissions and residencies to come in 2019. NEXT STAGE has made MTC a nation-wide leader in the development of new Australian stories, and it is particularly thrilling that the 2019 Season features the first NEXT STAGE commission to be staged, Golden Shield. On behalf of the team here at MTC, I extend my heartfelt thanks to every single Donor that makes these moments possible, and invite you to consider joining our community of Donors by including a donation with your subscription. Next time you take your seat for another night of amazing theatre you will know that it is your generosity that has helped to make all this possible. Each night, every performance, you are creating opportunities that impact the future of theatre and art in Melbourne. I hope your 2019 MTC Season is full of rewarding and challenging moments at the theatre, shared and relived across the year. See you at the theatre.

N E X T S TAG E WRITERS’ PROGRAM
In the summer of 1953 MTC premiered a new play by young Australian playwright, Ray Lawler: Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. Nobody knew then that this play would change the course of Australian theatre history. Since then, MTC has presented the work of many more great Australian playwrights, but NEXT STAGE takes things to a whole new level. As we enter the second year of the program MTC is quickly building a body of Australian contemporary work on a scale unlike ever before, with plays that reflect the diversity of 21st Century Australia. NEXT STAGE sets a new benchmark for Australian play development with a minimum of 35 Australian plays commissioned and up to 15 writer-in-residence opportunities across the next 5 years. Ground-breaking new plays like Golden Shield by Anchuli Felicia King are already set to thrill MTC audiences, with many more exciting works in the pipeline, ensuring the future for Australian playwriting remains bright. To learn more about the program, and how you can support Australian writing for the stage, visit mtc.com.au/nextstage
