MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

BENJAMIN NORTHEY CONDUCTOR

Established in 1906, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is an arts leader and Australia’s oldest professional orchestra. Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis has been at the helm of the MSO since 2013. Engaging more than 4 million people each year, the MSO reaches diverse audiences through live performances, recordings, TV and radio broadcasts and live streaming. Its international audiences include China, where MSO has performed in 2012, 2016 and most recently in May 2018, Europe (2014) and Indonesia, where in 2017 it performed at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Prambanan Temple.

Benjamin Northey is Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The MSO performs a variety of concerts ranging from symphonic performances at its home, Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne, to its annual free concerts at Melbourne’s largest outdoor venue, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The MSO also delivers innovative and engaging programs and digital tools to audiences of all ages through its Education and Outreach initiatives.

Benjamin appears regularly as guest conductor with all major Australian symphony orchestras, Opera Australia (Turandot, L’elisir d’amore, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Carmen), New Zealand Opera (Sweeney Todd) and State Opera South Australia (La sonnambula, Les contes d’Hoffmann). His international appearances include concerts with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. An Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, his awards include the prestigious 2010 Melbourne Prize Outstanding Musician’s Award as well as multiple awards for his numerous recordings with ABC Classics. Benjamin Northey’s Associate Conductor position is generously supported by Anthony Pratt.

GRETA BRADMAN SOPRANO

MELBOURNE CITY BALLET

Greta Bradman is one of Australasia’s most celebrated operatic and concert artists. Recent performance highlights include Mimi (La bohème) for Opera Australia, Lisa (La sonnambula) for Victorian Opera and the title roles in Theodora (Canberra) and Rodelinda (Melbourne). Her 2015 debut album for Decca Classics My Hero received fivestar reviews and topped the classical and classical crossover ARIA charts for several months. Her new album Home is now available.

Melbourne City Ballet is a full time classical ballet company based in Coburg, Victoria, focused on developing classical ballet throughout metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Australia. Our artists are some of the finest dancers in the country, known for their strength and diversity, and we are passionate about creating opportunities for up-and-coming performers. We believe creating collaborative relationships with other artists, theatres, corporate entities and festivals will help establish a new trend for ballet within Australia.

After obtaining her music degree from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Greta received her Fellowship from the Australian National Academy of Music before completing a Graduate Diploma in Advanced Vocal Studies at the Wales International Academy of Voice – where she studied under Dennis O’Neill CBE and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

4

Melbourne City Ballet education programs work alongside artists and students with a focus on enhancing performance skills while continuing training. We offer a significant number of training programs through The School of Melbourne City Ballet. These programs educate in the areas of polishing, professional experience and performance and allow students to gain experience with industry professionals.

PROGRAM NOTES Christmas is a time of eager anticipation and magic. At Christmastime, adults turn into children, trying to guess what could be inside all those presents Santa left overnight. And of course Christmas comes with its own distinctive ‘soundtrack’: the music that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. The musical traditions around Christmas reflect different cultures, customs and times, from religious versions of the nativity story, to songs about red-nosed reindeer. Although it may be harder for Australians to associate themselves with sleigh rides and snowmen, tonight’s concert will transport you to the snowy, pine-scented Christmases of the northern hemisphere. The first surviving records of music associated with the feast of Christmas stem from 4th century Rome, consisting of Latin hymns and chants, but it would take until the 13th century for the first Christmas songs to appear in the public realm. In England, the traditions of wassailing and carolling developed, resulting in the first English language carols to appear in a collection in 1426. Today we continue this tradition with much-loved carols & modern classics, from Hark the Herald Angels Sing to Jingle Bells. And of course, no Christmas program would be complete without Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. First performed by Bing Crosby in 1941, it remains the biggest selling single of all time. Today’s program opens and closes with works by one of America’s most famous composer of light music, Leroy Anderson. His Sleigh Ride is one of his most popular works and has been a staple of Christmas movies since it was released in 1949.

Christmas has also become an annual mainstay of the stage and screen, so today’s program features a selection of ballet and film music synonymous with this time of year. Tchaikovsky’s adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman’s Nutcracker and Mouse King into a ballet resulted in one of his most popular works. The Nutcracker includes music that is impossible to escape during the Christmas period. We start with the delicate Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, followed by the Ukrainian folk-rhythms of the Trepak dance, and culminating with the celebratory Waltz of the Flowers. We also have two examples of film music from renowned composers of the silver screen. The first comes from the 1930s Russia with Lieutenant Kijé and Prokofiev’s first film score. His Troika depicts a winter’s journey through a beautiful snowy countryside on a traditional Russian horse-drawn sled. We also include a modern master of cinema whose music has formed the backdrop of many iconic movies including the Back to the Future trilogy. Alan Silvestri’s score to the animated family-favourite The Polar Express, which earned him an Academy Award nomination, follows the story of a young boy’s magical journey to the North Pole as he discovers the true meaning of Christmas. With carols, seasonal songs, and a bit of magic, the MSO hopes to bring you in the right mood for Christmas. We look forward to sharing this Christmas joy with you by hearing you sing-a-long to your favourite carol with the MSO. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! © Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL Traditional; English text following Frederick Oakeley.

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him Born the King of Angels: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above! Glory to God, glory in the highest: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be glory given! Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING Text: Charles Wesley, adapted by George Whitefield and others

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim “Christ is born in Bethlehem” Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King!” Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity; Pleased as man with man to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel! Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King!” Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings; Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth; Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King!”

SILENT NIGHT Text: Joseph Mohr; translation John Freeman Young

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright; Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light; Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
