About Symphony in a Day The MSO is committed to providing innovative, dynamic and fun ways to engage with music makers and music lovers of all ages. Our musicians and chorus members delight in sharing their artistry and talent through unique, shared experiences. Supported by Crown Resorts Foundation and the Packer Family Foundation, Symphony in a Day is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic community musicians to rehearse and perform side-by-side with the professional musicians of the MSO on one of Australia’s most iconic stages. This performance is dedicated to the memory of the late Richard Gill AO whose passion for and commitment to community engagement continues to be an inspiration to us all.

Benjamin Northey conductor Benjamin Northey is Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Northey appears regularly as guest conductor with all major Australian symphony orchestras, Opera Australia (Turandot, L’elisir d’amore, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Carmen), New Zealand Opera (Sweeney Todd) and State Opera South Australia (La sonnambula, Les contes d’Hoffmann). His international appearances include concerts with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. With a progressive and diverse approach to repertoire, he has collaborated with a broad range of artists including Maxim Vengerov and Slava Grigoryan, as well as popular artists Tim Minchin and James Morrison. An Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, his awards include the 2010 Melbourne Prize Outstanding Musician’s Award and multiple awards for his numerous recordings with ABC Classics.

Emily Swanson is a Geelong-based soprano who performs regularly around Victoria. She studied singing and recording engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She fell in love with choral music at an early age while singing with the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, and since then has sung with the Montreal Symphony Chorus, the London Symphony Chorus, and the Chorus of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. She has been a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Chorus, the Melbourne Cappella, Orchestra Geelong and Vox Angelica, and is a founding member of Grace Notes A Cappella Trio.

CAROLYN BAKER mezzo-soprano Carolyn is an experienced soloist and ensemble singer and has been a member of the MSO Chorus since 2017. Carolyn also sings with the Melbourne Chamber Choir and regularly performs as a choir soloist, most recently as the Queen in Handel’s Solomon and as a quartet soloist in Hans Leo Hassler’s Missa Octo Vocum. Carolyn also performs regularly in eisteddfods and recitals. Currently studying voice and piano, Carolyn commenced her musical studies at a young age on the violin and was principal second violin with the Heidelberg Youth Orchestra.

ASHER REICHMAN tenor Over the past two years Asher has toured China with the Australian International Opera Company and engaged in many opera projects and recitals with the young artists program of XLarts, as well as joining the tenor section of the MSO Chorus. He continues to hone his craft under the guidance of his father David and renowned contralto Liane Keegan. Besides performing, Asher is a strength and conditioning coach and is also studying towards a degree in the health industry.

ROBERT LATHAM bass Robert is an established performer known for his versatility across a variety of genres including classical, opera, rock, pop and a cappella. He has been involved with many different performing groups, such as Australia’s #1 male a cappella group, Suade. He has been soloist and chorister for many cantatas, mass and oratorios in Victoria, including a Music Theatre Guild nomination for his portrayal of Riff in West Side Story. Robert completed his Bachelor of Music at the Melba Conservatorium of Music in 2007 on a full Robert Salzer Foundation scholarship, and completed a Diploma of Education at La Trobe University in 2015. 7
