Melbourne Symphony Orchestra The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is a leading cultural figure in the Australian arts landscape, bringing the best in orchestral music and passionate performance to a diverse audience across Victoria, the nation and around the world. Each year the MSO engages with more than 5 million people through live concerts, TV, radio and online broadcasts, international tours, recordings and education programs. The MSO is a vital presence, both onstage and in the community, in cultivating classical music in Australia. The nation’s first professional orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has been the sound of the city of Melbourne since 1906. Joe Hisaishi conductor/piano Joe Hisaishi was born in Nagano, Japan. He started to show his interest in minimal music when he was a student at Kunitachi College of Music, and started his career as a contemporary composer. His career as a solo artist began with MKWAJU in 1981 and
Starting with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984, Hisaishi has produced music for ten Hayao Miyazaki films, including My Neighbor Totoro and The Wind Rises. He also composed the music for HANA-BI directed by Takeshi Kitano, Departures directed by Yojiro Takita, Villain directed by Sang-il Lee, The Tale of Princess Kaguya directed by Isao Takahata, and the What A Wonderful Family! series directed by Yoji Yamada. He has collaborated on the music production of nearly 80 films at home and abroad, winning many awards including several Outstanding Achievement in Music prizes at the Japan Academy Film Prize. Other awards include for Spirited Away (Outstanding Music in an Animated Feature Production, 30th Annie Awards); Welcome to Dongmakgol (Best Original Film Music Award, 4th Korean Film Award); The Postmodern Life of My Aunt (Best Original Film Score, 27th Hong Kong Film Award); and, Our Time Will Come (Best Original Music, 12th Asian Film Award). In 2001, he made his debut as a film director with Quartet, taking charge of the theme music and co-writing the script. The film was officially invited for the World Competition section of the Montreal World Film Festival. Hisaishi is also a skilled performer, ranging from piano soloist to orchestra conductor. At the 2004 Cannes International Film Festival, Hisaishi became the first Japanese musician to conduct an orchestra live to film, performing Buster Keaton’s The General. At the concert Joe Hisaishi in Budokan in 2008, he led an orchestra, choirs and marching bands totaling 1,200 musicians while conducting and playing piano. Since 2017, he has been touring worldwide with Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki, visiting Paris, Melbourne, Los Angeles, New York, Prague and more.
In 2004, he assumed the post of first music director of the New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra. He has been producing and conducting popular concerts called JOE HISAISHI presents MUSIC FUTURE and in 2019 started the concert series Future Orchestra Classics. He has released a Beethoven Symphony Box Set that was given the “Special Prize” from the 57th Record Academy Award Japan 2019. Recently, he has been composing and conducting new works in a contemporary classical style, including Contrabass Concerto, TRI-AD for Large Orchestra, The East Land Symphony, Asian Symphony and ad Universum. Hisaishi has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Philip Glass, David Lang, Mischa Maisky, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Hisaishi is an Invited Professor at Kunitachi College of Music. In 2009, he received the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon from the government of Japan. His unique contributions as a contemporary composer and enthusiasm for going beyond the ordinary are highly valued worldwide.
Antoinette Halloran soprano One of Australia’s most accomplished and best-loved sopranos, Antoinette Halloran performs regularly with all the major Australasian opera companies and symphony orchestras and appears frequently on national television and radio. In 2020, she sings the title role in Tosca for Opera Queensland and, for State Opera of South Australia, Mrs Lovett is Sweeney Todd and Olive in Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. Recent engagements have included Lady Macbeth (Macbeth) and the title role in Tosca for West Australian Opera (Helpmann
Award nomination), Praskovya in The Nose for Opera Australia, and The Fox in The Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera. She was associate artist for José Carreras’ National Tour, and performed in concert with the West Australian and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras.
Mai Fujisawa vocals Born in Tokyo, singer and lyricist Mai Fujisawa made her on-screen debut at the age of 4, singing Nausicäa Requiem (featured in today’s concert), from her father Joe Hisaishi’s soundtrack to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Studio Ghibli’s earliest film. Collaborating with Swedish and Norwegian composers, she recorded her first album Mai in Sweden and the Czech Republic. In 2012, she sang the opening theme of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part II, with music by Alexandre Desplat. In the same year, she joined the United Nations Singers as a guest singer for their Japan tour. In 2015, the UN’s 70th memorial year, she joined the UN Singers Peace and Hope Concert Tour in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a guest singer and served as producer for the Tokyo performance. In 2016, she sang and wrote lyrics for the theme song for an American documentary film about World War II called Paper Lanterns, with music by American composer Chad Cannon. Mai also sang the main theme for Clouds Above the Hill, a long-running historical drama series on NHK TV about the Meiji Revolution, based on the original story by Ryotaro Shiba. Additionally, she wrote and sang the end theme song for Ojarumaru, an anime TV show popular among children in Japan commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In recent years, she has been contributing to revitalisation of rural towns by bridging provincial cities through the power of music. Activities include being a goodwill ambassador for Nakano City of Nagano Prefecture, where she has produced, written, and performed theme songs for Nakano City and Tochigi City in Tochigi Prefecture.
Ken Murray mandolin Ken Murray has developed a singular path as a guitarist combining performance, composition, teaching and research. He has championed and recorded Spanish music from the early twentieth century, worked extensively with contemporary composers and has been active as a performer of Brazilian and South American musical styles. Murray has a strong commitment to performing contemporary music and has performed in premiere performances of over 100 works. An integral part of his activities has been working with Australian composers. His CDs and concerts have been broadcast on ABC FM and he has performed on the Austrian label Kairos (Italy), Mode Records (USA), Move, Tall Poppies and ABC Classics. Murray graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne, where he is Senior Lecturer and Head of Guitar at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Australian Air Force Band Commanding Officer: Squadron Leader Mark Pentreath, CSM Director of Music: Flight Lieutenant Daniel Phillips Squadron Warrant Officer: Warrant Officer Rod Ellem Drum Major: Flight Sergeant Adam Schlemitz The Air Force Band is one of the Air Force’s high-profile public relations assets. The band performs at Air Force and Australian Defence Force ceremonial events and provides musical entertainment for government and defence industry functions. The band shares Air Force’s proud traditions and achievements with Australian and international communities. The band traces its history back to the formation of a part-time RAAF Band formed by volunteer airmen in January 1923 at the Air Force’s birth place, Point Cook. On 20 August of that year Hugh Niven was appointed the first Band Master, and this date is recognised as the beginning of music services in the Air Force. Recently the band supported the 100th anniversary of the Armistice commemorations in Villers-Bretonneux in France, and Air Force Band coordinated the Australian Defence Force involvement in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus For more than 50 years the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus has been the unstinting voice of the Orchestra’s choral repertoire. The MSO Chorus sings with the finest conductors including Sir Andrew Davis, Edward Gardner, Mark Wigglesworth, Bernard Labadie, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Manfred Honeck, and is committed to developing and performing new Australian and international choral repertoire. Commissions include Brett Dean’s Katz und Spatz, Ross Edwards’ Mountain Chant, and Paul Stanhope’s Exile Lamentations. Recordings by the MSO Chorus have received critical acclaim. It has performed across Brazil and at the Cultura Inglese Festival in Sao Paolo, with The Australian Ballet, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, at the AFL Grand Final and at Anzac Day commemorative ceremonies.
Warren Trevelyan-Jones chorus master Warren Trevelyan-Jones is the Head of Music at St James’, King Street in Sydney and is regarded as one of the leading choral conductors and choir trainers in Australia. Warren has had an extensive singing career as a soloist and ensemble singer in Europe, including nine years in the Choir of Westminster Abbey, and regular work with
Warren is also Director of the Parsons Affayre, Founder and Co-Director of The Consort of Melbourne and, in 2001 with Dr Michael Noone, founded the Gramophone award-winning group Ensemble Plus Ultra. Warren is also a qualified music therapist.
Australian Girls Choir The Australian Girls Choir (AGC) was founded in 1984 by Judith Curphey OAM and has blossomed to an organisation with 6,500 choristers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The vibrant performances of the AGC have been embraced by millions worldwide. Singing for Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II and President Obama, and at major events including the ‘Broadway to Oz’ Tour with Hugh Jackman, Australian Open Final and with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra are just a few of their crowning achievements. Further afield, the AGC has toured on 43 occasions with their voices reaching almost every corner of the globe. Performances for Pope Benedict XVI and the King of Tonga, and appearances at the Shanghai World Expo and G’Day USA are just a few of their international accomplishments. The AGC is proud of their 20-year relationship with Qantas singing at live events and in the ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ advertising campaigns.
