SIDNEY MYER FREE CONCERTS 5, 8 & 14 February

#msobowl

Welcome A message from the Minister for Creative Industries

A message from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl concerts are a summer favourite for music lovers from all walks of life. Each year tens of thousands of people pack a picnic — and the Bowl — for a fantastic program of music as the sun goes down.

On behalf of the MSO, thank you for joining us at our 2020 Sidney Myer Free Concert Series presented in association with the University of Melbourne and Arts Centre Melbourne.

These free annual concerts are a gift of the Myer family and I acknowledge their continuing generosity and outstanding commitment to Victoria’s cultural life. This year, the MSO has dedicated its first concert to those affected by the devastating bushfires across Australia. In partnership with the Red Cross, funds raised on the night will support impacted communities and I encourage you to contribute if you can. The Hon Martin Foley MP Minister for Creative Industries

This year’s concerts showcase a number of world premieres, and include marvellous music from Australia and abroad. From Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman Overture of 1843 to our 2020 Composer in Residence, Deborah Cheetham AO’s new work, Long Time Living Here, created just last year, these concerts span the impressive breadth of orchestral music. Today more than ever, music demonstrates that it is integral to our lives – bringing us together with our friends, family and community to share in the healing powers that it so readily provides. As Hans Christian Andersen said, ‘Where words fail, music speaks’ and through the MSO’s language of music, our thoughts are with everyone affected by the bushfires. May these concerts bring comfort and beauty in these challenging times. Michael Ullmer AO Chairman Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

A message from Arts Centre Melbourne

B U S H F I R E A PPE A L

Welcome to another summer of great outdoor free concerts featuring the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in our much-loved Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

The performance on 5 February is dedicated to those affected by the bushfires. The Australian Red Cross will be collecting donations to assist their emergency teams supporting thousands of people in evacuation and recovery centres across the country.

While Victoria’s bushfires have had significant impact on all our lives over recent weeks, we are pleased to once again welcome the community to one of the city’s great outdoor events. The tradition of these concerts overlooking the spectacular Bowl, bringing together family and friends for the remarkable experience of live orchestral music, are a highlight of the season at this iconic venue.

Donations can also be made at redcross.org.au/mso

I hope you enjoy tonight’s concert featuring great music and performers. And don’t forget the dedicated Melbourne Symphony Orchestra box office which operates in Hamer Hall, where you can find out more about the 2020 season and purchase tickets to another remarkable orchestral concert. Enjoy. Claire Spencer Chief Executive Arts Centre Melbourne

Emily Sun violin

Katie Noonan soprano

‘Possessed of a superb talent’ (The Advertiser), with ‘a perfect balance of expressivity and formidable strength’ (The Australian), violinist Emily Sun is in demand internationally for her compelling interpretations. As a soloist, Emily has performed with Sydney, Canberra, Tasmania, Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, as well as with orchestras in UK, Europe, USA and Asia. She performed at Buckingham Palace alongside Maxim Vengerov for HRH Prince of Wales, and at the Royal Palace of Brussels in the presence of the King and Queen of Belgium.

Over the past 20 years, five-time ARIA award-winning artist Katie Noonan has proven herself one of Australia’s most hardworking, versatile and prolific artists.

As a teen, Emily shot to national fame in the award-winning documentary ‘Mrs Carey’s Concert’. She is the ABC Artistin-Residence and her debut album will be released on ABC Classics in 2021. Emily’s international prizes include the ABC Young Performers Award and the UK Royal Overseas League Commonwealth Musician of the Year. Emily studied in Sydney with Dr Robin Wilson, and with Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music London where she now serves on the faculty. She was further mentored by Pinchas Zukerman and Augustin Dumay.

8

Named one of the greatest Australian singers of all time by the Herald Sun, Katie has produced more than a dozen albums over her career with seven platinum records under her belt and 25 ARIA award nominations that span diverse genres. Katie has performed for royalty, national and international leaders, and blazed a trail for young women artists. Music, for Katie, is a lifelong lesson, a generous act of giving, and a means to change the world.

e.motion21 dancers e.motion21 is an independent notfor-profit organisation that provides Australian-first evidence-based programs for children and adults living with Down syndrome. Their vision is to enhance lives and change perceptions of Down syndrome within society through innovative and specialised programs in dance, fitness, education and employment. At e.motion21 this is called Moving Bodies and Moving Boundaries. Moving bodies: providing programs to individuals living with Down syndrome in supportive and social environments tailored to meet their specific learning needs.

Moving boundaries: engaging positively with individuals, families and communities through programs, performances and media to uncover new potential, promote understanding and raise expectations. e.motion21 believes in an inclusive future where people with Down syndrome and intellectual disability are active contributors to society economically, socially and creatively. They Move Bodies, Move Boundaries, Move Minds. This is what e.motion21 stands for, and how they are making Australia a better place.

The MSO and e.motion21 enjoy a sustained partnership founded in mutual learning and artistic respect. Celebrating world-class orchestral music, dance, creativity and fun, the organisations have worked together since December 2017 to explore and develop as artists. MSO musicians are inspired in their music-making by the spontaneity and authenticity of e.motion21’s unique artists. Dancers are inspired to explore and express emotion through movement to classical music, often working directly with individual musicians and their instruments developing true and trusting relationships. Wild Swans is the culmination of these months of collaboration and learning. Through the powerful and dynamic creative lens of Circa Contemporary Circus' creatives Yaron Lifschitz (Creative Director) and Elizabeth McDonnell (choreography and design), artists from MSO and e.motion21 come together to present a work which transcends boundaries, challenges pre-conceptions, entertains and empowers.

Acknowledging Country In the first project of its kind in Australia, the MSO has developed a musical Acknowledgment of Country with music composed by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham AO, featuring Indigenous languages from across Victoria. Generously supported by Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Commonwealth Government through the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, the MSO is working in partnership with Short Black Opera and Indigenous language custodians who are generously sharing their cultural knowledge. The Acknowledgement of Country allows us to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we perform in the language of that country and in the orchestral language of music. The Musical Acknowledgement of Country will be performed by its composer, Deborah Cheetham AO, on 5 February, and by Short Black Opera principal artist Shauntai Batzke on 8 February. Boon Wurrung language generously supplied by Aunty Carolyn Briggs and the Boon Wurrung Foundation. Australian National Commission for UNESCO United Nations Educational, ScientiďŹ c and Cultural Organization

About Long Time Living Here In all the world, only Australia can lay claim to the longest continuing cultures and we celebrate this more today than in any other time since our shared history began. We live each day drawing energy from a land which has been nurtured by the traditional owners for more than 2000 generations. When we acknowledge country we pay respect to the land and to the people in equal measure. As a composer I have specialised in coupling the beauty and diversity of our Indigenous languages with the power and intensity of classical music. In order to compose the music for this Acknowledgement of Country Project I have had the great privilege of working with no fewer than eleven ancient languages from the state of Victoria, including the language of my late Grandmother, Yorta Yorta woman Frances McGee. I pay my deepest respects to the elders and ancestors who are represented in these songs of acknowledgement and to the language custodians who have shared their knowledge and expertise in providing each text. I am so proud of the MSO for initiating this landmark project and grateful that they afforded me the opportunity to make this contribution to the ongoing quest of understanding our belonging in this land. — Deborah Cheetham AO 15

A GIFT TO MELBOURNE Each year the Sidney Myer Music Bowl hosts two major events that symbolise the musical life of the Bowl in the heart of Melbourne – in February, the Sidney Myer Free Concerts, and Carols by Candlelight in December. Sidney Myer (1878–1934), an enthusiastic though not accomplished musician himself, loved all forms of music, but none more so than open-air free concerts. Through his philanthropic generosity and gratitude to the city in which were built his great department stores, the concerts were first held in the summer of 1929 and 1930, at the height of the Depression, in the Royal Botanical Gardens. Sidney died suddenly in 1934 on his way to chair a meeting of the Centenary of Victoria Musical Festival. In his Will he provided for annual performances by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra which he had been instrumental in forming. And so, in February 1959, the Free Concerts found a permanent home in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, here in the natural amphitheatre of the King’s Domain. Sidney’s greatest pleasure was seeing people enjoy outdoor concerts. We hope that everyone tonight experiences that same musical joy. Stephen Shelmerdine Chairman, Estate of Late Sidney B. Myer
