Welcome A message from the Premier
A message from the Minister for Creative Industries
I welcome everyone to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 Sidney Myer Free Concert series.
Welcome to another year of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Sidney Myer Bowl Concerts. This year marks 90 years of the free concerts and 60 of those years at our much-loved Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
This year’s concerts bring together works from some of the world’s most renowned composers, led by conductors Benjmin Northey and Tianyi Lu. This year we also celebrate a special milestone: 90 years of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra hosting free summer concerts for the people of Victoria – and 60 years of those concerts taking place at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. I’d like to thank the MSO for sharing the gift of music with Victorians for so many years, and for reinforcing our city’s reputation as Australia’s arts and culture capital. I hope everyone enjoys this year's concerts in one of our most iconic venues. The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier
The annual summer concerts are a gift of the Myer family and an iconic event in our city. Each year the MSO brings its talents outdoors to share a series of concerts featuring acclaimed Australian and international conductors and performers. I’m sure that many of us have favourite memories of MSO concerts here at the Bowl – and will add to those memories again in 2019. These concerts provide a taste of what the MSO has in store for its coming season and I hope they inspire you to discover many more cultural experiences in our creative state in the year ahead. The Hon Martin Foley MP Minister for Creative Industries

A message from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
A message from Arts Centre Melbourne
Welcome to the 2019 Sidney Myer Free Concert Series presented by the MSO in partnership with the University of Melbourne and Arts Centre Melbourne.
Arts Centre Melbourne congratulates the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in this, the 60th anniversary year of these free concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
This year we celebrate the legacy of Sidney Myer whose love of music established a Melbourne tradition of open-air music performance.
Together with the Orchestra we are pleased to continue to provide remarkable experiences for all Victorians through these special family performances.
Thanks to Sidney Myer’s generosity, Melbourne has enjoyed MSO’s free outdoor concerts for 90 years. Our annual series in ‘the Bowl’ are a perennial family favourite and a highlight of our city’s summer events. Year after year, friends and families, the young and the young-at-heart, gather to share the experience of live, symphonic music in this perfect open-air setting.
I hope you enjoy tonight’s concert with your friends and family as you soak up the beautiful sounds in this iconic Melbourne venue.
If tonight is your introduction to classical music, I know you will be thrilled by the sights and sounds you are about to witness. If you are already familiar with the MSO, this is sure to be another memorable experience. Michael Ullmer AO Chairman Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
And don’t forget the dedicated Melbourne Symphony Orchestra box office which operates in Hamer Hall, where you can find out more about the 2019 season and purchase tickets to another remarkable orchestral concert. Enjoy. Claire Spencer Chief Executive Arts Centre Melbourne

A Gift to Melbourne – The Sidney Myer Music Bowl
Sidney Myer loved music. During the summers of 1929 and 1930, now 90 years ago, he gave £1,000 per year to enable the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to stage free open-air public concerts. These concerts were held in the Royal Botanic Gardens and they were a phenomenal success. In 1932 he established a Trust to fund free outdoor symphony concerts, but died suddenly in 1934. In recognition of Sidney Myer’s vision for a permanent site, the Trustees of the Sidney Myer Fund provided for the development of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. In its 60th anniversary year, the Myer Music Bowl celebrates six decades of music and hallmark events at Melbourne’s iconic open-air performance stadium.
Most memorable in the venue’s history is the Seekers concert in 1967, where 200,000 people packed the Bowl and the surrounding areas. In keeping with its genesis and Sidney Myer’s wishes, the Bowl is the venue for the annual Sidney Myer Free Concerts with the Melbourne Sydney Orchestra. For Sidney Myer, the reward was in the giving. I hope you enjoy the music and know of the pleasure that he would have in seeing these concerts bring such joy to all who attend. Sid Myer AM Chairman, Estate of Late Sidney B. Myer
Join the Celebration As we celebrate 90 years of free MSO concerts and 60 years at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, we want to hear from you! Share your memories and photos using #msobowl on social media to be a part of this special anniversary celebration.

Olivia Chindamo soprano
Daniel Tang Le piano
Olivia Chindamo is best known for her natural and effortless ability to improvise. As the 2016 Bell Award winner for “Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year”, Olivia firmly cemented her place in Australia’s flourishing jazz scene and is now being recognised internationally.
Hailed by Arts Review for his “show stopping virtuoso piano rendering,” Australian pianist Daniel Tang Le has enjoyed an international career spanning four continents. Beginning his piano studies at the age of three, Daniel received a music scholarship to the Melbourne Grammar School at the age of eleven. By fourteen, he attended the Australian National Academy of Music Young Academy Program and gave his first live radio performances on the Australian Broadcasting Company and 3MBS.
Often labelled as a “musician’s singer”, she has already earned the respect of many of her peers and has performed on stages of all sizes, including Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, The Basement (Sydney), Melbourne’s iconic Hamer Hall and several large scale festivals and concerts, including Sydney’s Twilight at Taronga Zoo Summer Series 2015 and 2016. As well as fronting her own bands, Olivia often appears as a guest vocalist with James Morrison’s Big Band and performs and collaborates with many other Australian bands and projects.
Daniel has performed at venues including Lincoln Center in New York, Melbourne Recital Centre, Queensland Performing Arts Theatre and Engadin Summer Piano Academy in Switzerland. Currently based in New York City, Daniel is pursuing his Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music as the Ruby Fae Ellenger Overstreet Scholar.

Leon Fei was born in Melbourne and started learning violin and piano at five years old. He was invited to perform as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in New York at age ten after winning first prize and “Judges’ Favourite Award” at the 2015 International Piano and Strings Competition held in the U.S.
Born in Ararat, Victoria, Calvin Bowman is a graduate of the University of Melbourne, and was the first Australian to graduate with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University, with the assistance of a Fulbright scholarship.
In 2017 Leon became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Australia National Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award, following his winning of the 2017 3MBS Fine Music Young Performer Award and Audience Choice Award in Melbourne. Leon has performed, toured and undertaken master classes in Germany, Prague and Spain. He was awarded a Licentiate Diploma in Music with Distinction in 2018 and is Concertmaster of Scotch College Middle School Symphony Orchestra.

He has also composed two operas: Lost to the Music, written for the National Boys’ Choir, and The Magic Pudding – The Opera, commissioned by Victorian Opera. As a performer he has presented the complete Bach organ works twice in public, most recently in 2009 for the Melbourne International Festival where he performed them in a single seventeenhour sitting.

MUSIC MULTITUDE FOR THE
a musical legacy
The year – 1929. The ‘20s were still roaring when Sidney Myer gave £1,000 for a radical idea that would change summer in Melbourne – free open air concerts for the people. Ninety years and countless picnics later, Melburnians are still enjoying the best quality symphonic music under the stars – for free – thanks to Sidney Myer. With the huge popularity of those first concerts, Sidney Myer had the foresight to set up a trust to fund them – forever. His wife, Merlyn Myer, noted “At those Symphony Orchestra Concerts in the Gardens when he saw thousands upon thousands enjoying the music under
glorious surroundings – he was always overjoyed and grateful that he was so privileged to be in a position to do such things for the public.” Like Sidney Myer, you too can make a lasting difference to Melbourne. By leaving a gift in your Will to the MSO, you will ensure outstanding symphonic music, inspiring education programs and Australian music and musicians always have a home in our city. Individuals from all walks of life have made gifts of all sizes to the MSO in their Wills. Won’t you join them in being a part of music in Melbourne forever?
For information on how you can make a gift in your Will to the MSO, please contact Erika Jordan on 03 8646 1109 or jordane@mso.com.au.
