MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

ELISE MCCANN VOCALIST

Established in 1906, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is an arts leader and Australia’s longest-running professional orchestra. Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis has been at the helm of MSO since 2013.

Elise is most wellknown for originating the role of Miss Honey in the Royal Shakespeare Production of Matilda for which she won the 2016 Helpmann Award, the 2015 Sydney Theatre Award, and was nominated for the 2016 Green Room Award. Previously she featured in the Channel Seven miniseries Peter Allen – Not The Boy Next Door, playing Peter’s sister Lynne Woolnough.

The MSO works with Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey and Assistant Conductor Tianyi Lu, as well as with such eminent recent guest conductors as Tan Dun, John Adams, Jakub Hrůša and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. It also collaborates with non-classical musicians including Elton John, Nick Cave and Flight Facilities.

BRETT KELLY CONDUCTOR Brett Kelly has conducted all the major Australian orchestras as well as New Zealand’s Auckland Sinfonia and the Dunedin Symphony. Between 1989 and 2004 he was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of The Academy of Melbourne, a chamber orchestra he formed from among colleagues at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Brett has been Principal Trombone of the MSO since 1981. As an instrumentalist, he was a core member of three of Australia’s most prestigious groups, The Seymour Group, Elision, and Flederman, with whom he has made a number of recordings. He has conducted the premiere of more than 200 Australian works and was nominated for a Green Room Award for the premiere of Nicolas Vinees’ The Hive for Chamber Made. Brett has conducted over 60 film soundtracks, including Knowing, Australia, Happy Feet 2 and The Dressmaker.

A graduate of NIDA, Elise’s theatrical credits includes Lucille Ball in Everybody Loves Lucy for which she was nominated for Best Cabaret Performance in the 2015 Sydney Theatre Awards. Other roles include Ali in the 10th Anniversary Tour of MAMMA MIA!; Janet McGregor in the Australian tour of South Pacific; The World Premier of Doctor Zhivago; Fruma Sarah in the Australian Tour of Fiddler on the Roof; Cordelia in Falsettos; Florinda in Into The Woods; Little Women; My Fair Lady; Camelot; Side By Side By Sondheim; Musical of Musicals; Stephen Schwartz in Conversation; It’s a Bird It’s a Plane It’s Superman and On The Twentieth Century. Elise’s debut album Dahlesque was released nationally with ABC Music in June 2017, following which she premiered the concert of Dahlesque at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. She most recently appeared as Meg Brockie in Brigadoon for The Production Company, and will next be seen as Ado Annie in Oklahoma at the State Theatre Melbourne.

The program features works by Bernstein, the latest commission from MSO’s Cybec Young Composer in Residence, Ade Vincent, and Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed by rising Australian star cellist, Eliza Sdraulig.
