André Gremillet Managing Director

Welcome to 2014 MUSIC TO MOVE YOU This is a great orchestra. I first conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2009, and the musicians captured my heart right away. Now, as Chief Conductor, I want to capture the hearts of you, our audience, as well. Your listening experiences with your Orchestra in 2014 will be studded with memorable events and music that highlights the outstanding musicianship of the orchestral players and choristers.

THE MAHLER CYCLE BEGINS This year we begin our journey through the symphonies of Gustav Mahler – a milestone in the life of an orchestra. If you think about composers whose symphonies take you on a journey as you progress through them – Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius – it is Mahler’s symphonies that provide the most astonishing development through the cycle. From the First Symphony – a young man’s piece – through the tragedy of the Sixth and the resignation of the final works, we take an emotional journey quite unlike anything else in the history of music.

YEFIM BRONFMAN AND EMANUEL AX Two of the most poetic pianists of today are working with the MSO in 2014. I love Yefim Bronfman’s sound in Brahms – he has the most wonderful richness of tone and exactly the virtuosity you need for this music. His performances with us of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.2 will be a highlight of the year. So, too, of course will be the appearances by Emanuel Ax in June. He is the most sensitive and generous of musical colleagues, and I am thrilled he will be joining us for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4.

EXCEPTIONAL GUESTS There are many more of the world’s great artists coming to perform with your Orchestra in 2014, from musicians who have performed with the MSO regularly in recent years, such as violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann and conductor Jakub Hrůša, to artists making their first appearances with the Orchestra, including two remarkable young artists – Canadian soprano Erin Wall and Palestinian pianist Saleem Abboud Ashkar.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

PHOTO: Lucas Dawson Photography

The variety of repertoire through the year is as exciting as you’ve ever seen. Those of you who are faithful supporters of the Orchestra will be more excited than ever and, for those of you coming to hear the MSO for the first time, you’ll be able to experience an extraordinary variety of music, and a spirit of artistic adventure unsurpassed anywhere in the country. Do join us in 2014.

Sir Andrew Davis Chief Conductor 1

THE very best of 2014 With a year SO full of exciting performances, it can be difficult to choose which ones to experience. We’ve done the job for you by selecting the ‘not to be missed’ highlights of 2014. Most of these concerts can be purchased as part of a Season Pass subscription. Or you can choose your own concerts (see page 34) to put together your own package of season highlights. We’re introducing a new seating reserve across many of our series, and if you subscribe to Master Series Thursday, Master Series Friday, Saturday Night Symphony, Saturday Matinees or Great Classics on Mondays you can enjoy a free bonus concert if you renew or purchase before 23 September 2013. Subscription prices in Geelong will remain the same in 2014 as for 2013, and if you subscribe to the concert series at Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University or Melbourne Town Hall Proms, your subscription price will be slightly lower than it was in 2013. This year Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis performs some of the most compelling orchestral music of all time, by Mahler, Strauss, Beethoven and Berlioz. Superstar soloists from around the world, including pianists Emanuel Ax, Piers Lane and Joyce Yang, cellist Truls Mørk, violinists James Ehnes, Nicola Benedetti and Frank Peter Zimmermann and guitarist Xuefei Yang, become local treasures when they partner with the Orchestra in 2014. PRESENTED BY THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE

metropolis new music festival ABOUT THe festival

1 TAPIOLA

3 orchestral concerts at 8pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre Additional performances, talks and activities at Melbourne Recital Centre to be announced soon.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Recital Centre recapture the time when the world was full of mystery, and the ancients ruled the land. Myths about gods, heroes and nature have played a central role in the development of human culture and continue to inspire us to this day. The mysteries and majesty of the cosmos and its creation have captivated many composers, especially the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whose Tapiola is a meditation on the ancient, mysterious Northern forests. This work has had a profound influence on many of the composers and artists featured in this year’s Festival. Composer, pianist and conductor, Olli Mustonen is one of the most stimulating and thoughtprovoking musicians of our time. His 2012 performances of the Beethoven piano concertos with the MSO brought capacity audiences to their feet in acclaim. He returns to Melbourne to lead Australia’s most important festival of contemporary music, which will feature magnificent Australian violinist Kristian Winther in a major solo role in two programs. In addition to the three orchestral programs featuring Olli Mustonen plus a piano recital from the Finnish master, guest pianist Joanna MacGregor’s time-travelling recital will encompass Bach and Shostakovich, the musical toys of Sofia Gubaidalina and birdsong from the Baroque to today. The Metropolis Festival also presents an eclectic collection of performances, talks and activities that dig deeper into the beginnings of our world and the stories and music we have weaved about it since the start of time. The full Festival program will be available in early 2014 at mso.com.au/metropolis

Saturday 5 april at 8pm Sibelius Tapiola Rautavaara Violin Concerto Mustonen Symphony No.1 Olli Mustonen conductor Kristian Winther violin Juha Kotalainen baritone This concert will also include a new work commissioned as part of the MSO’s Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Program.

2 FRESCOES OF DIONYSIUS wednesday 9 april at 8pm Shchedrin Frescoes of Dionysius Mustonen Sonata for Violin and Orchestra WORLD premiere

The orchestral works I have chosen for the Metropolis Festival consist entirely of music with which I have a very strong personal connection.

Shchedrin Sotto voce concerto for cello and orchestra

A special emphasis is given to the visionary and profound music of the great Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin; I consider my collaboration with him one of the most important and inspiring aspects of my musical life. In addition to my own works, the music of my own country, Finland, is featured through the compositions of my teacher, Einojuhani Rautavaara, his contemporary Joonas Kokkonen, and Ilari Kaila, one of the most original voices among the younger generation of composers in Finland. Our first MSO concert opens with one of Sibelius’ final works, Tapiola – an important influence to all other composers featured in these three concerts.

concert in which two of his major works share the program with classics from the Western tradition. His concerto for Pipa was inspired by China's Ghost Opera tradition, where shamans communicate with spirits from the past and future and establish dialogues between nature and the human soul. In his Triple Resurrection, Dun celebrates the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth with a spectacular piece of orchestral drama. Lu Siqing, one of China’s finest violinists, is soloist in Mendelssohn’s eternally popular violin concerto, and this program concludes with powerfully emotional music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet score.

DONATIONS ARE VITAL TO MANY ASPECTS OF THE MSO'S WORK. A donation of: $45 helps subsidise our UPBEAT program, and will bring one young person to three MSO concerts. $100 helps provide a beginner instrument for children in The Pizzicato Effect program. $400 will pay for a pre-concert visit by two MSO musicians to a disadvantaged school. $1,500 will support 40 disadvantaged students attending an MSO performance during Education Week.

education AND community The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community Outreach programs offer concerts and activities designed to inspire active participation in music for all ages. We work to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment, which integrates education and entertainment and fosters a lifelong interest in music and learning. Through initiatives like Education Week, Symphony in a Day, The Pizzicato Effect, MSO Jams and the MSO ArtPlay Ensemble program, we are constantly refining how best to engage with our community. Highlights in 2014 include Education Week at the Melbourne Town Hall from 27 to 31 May, including a third Symphony in a Day project on Saturday 31 May with musicians from communities across Victoria, MSO Jams for Juniors and MSO Family Jams. We also continue to develop our on-going partnerships with the City of Melbourne’s ArtPlay, and Meadows Primary School in Broadmeadows, where our string instrumental music program The Pizzicato Effect goes from strength to strength. For more information on these programs visit mso.com.au, or to request a copy of our 2014 MSO Education and Community Outreach brochure, please email education@mso.com.au indicating ‘Education 2014’ in the subject line.
