WELCOME Welcome to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 Education and Community Engagement season. The concerts and activities outlined within these pages represent the MSO’s commitment to making orchestral music available to everyone. They are designed to develop a deep and lasting connection between our musicians and the broader community. I would like to acknowledge and thank this season’s featured artists and the Orchestra for their passion and enthusiasm for this important area of work, and make special mention of MSO Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis, who this year will join us at

Education Week to conduct Symphony in a Day. These programs are presented with the valuable assistance of our government partners and the many individuals, trusts, foundations who support us to develop new and innovative ways to deliver the live orchestral experience. I encourage you to engage with our Orchestra through this special program of enriching creative experiences for all ages.

OPEN REHEARSALS

UP CLOSE AND MUSICAL

Take your class for a behind-the-scenes experience at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra!

(Study Design specific program for VCE Music students)

Open Rehearsals provide a wonderful insight into how professional musicians work together with a conductor to prepare a concert program. Students have the chance to observe a rehearsal, meet MSO musicians and ask questions about their profession. In 2015, we have handpicked a series of rehearsals that will be available for school group bookings. Students attending these programs will also receive a copy of the relevant concert program, with notes on the music and artists.

Musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Join Melbourne-based composer Katy Abbott as she presents her new work, Introduced Species, in three live performance workshops across metropolitan Melbourne. Inspired by the paintings of the same name by Australian artist Matthew Quick, Katy’s composition explores the impact that human interference can have on music in the same way that Matthew’s art explores its impact on our environment. Supported by a comprehensive online resource, the performance workshops include: • a performance of the work by musicians of the MSO • a detailed analysis of the work by the composer • an introduction to Matthew Quick’s artwork

• a discussion about the Australian environment This program and its affiliated resource have been specifically designed to link in with the following VCE Music Study Design outcomes: • Music Performance: Unit 2: Outcome 4 and Unit 3 and 4: Outcome 3

Based on a book written and illustrated by Jason Chapman, it tells the story of a music-loving dog and cat whose mission is to perform in the greatest orchestra in the world. This highly interactive concert will captivate young children with its mix of music, illustrated projections and audience participation. “The Pizzicato Effect is a transformational program. It provides our children with the opportunity to experience success in so many forms. The academic, social and emotional benefits of the program are all evident, and have been observed by teachers, tutors, parents, and the children themselves. It is highly valued by our community.”

JULIE COOKE PRINCIPAL, MEADOWS PRIMARY SCHOOL

THE PIZZICATO EFFECT The Pizzicato Effect is a partnership between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Meadows Primary School in Broadmeadows which provides access to quality music education for students aged four and above. Now in its sixth year, the program occupies a key place in the lives of its students connecting them with musicians and arts-based organisations both locally and around the world. Inspired by the El Sistema model of music education, students commence specialist music training at an early age, before progressing to lessons on violin, viola, cello or double bass. Learning is conducted by MSO teaching artists in group lessons where children are encouraged to work, respond, and play together in a vibrant and collaborative environment. For the older students, these classes are complemented by lunchtime ‘practice clubs’ and a bi-weekly after school program which provide an opportunity for students to further their instrumental skills. Over the course of their involvement, the children develop a strong relationship with their MSO mentors, their instrument, and their peers. The University of Melbourne’s recent research into the developmental assets, social-emotional wellbeing and educational impact of The Pizzicato Effect shows enhanced academic performance and total well-being for participating students. Special performance opportunities have been provided to participating students including performances at the City of Hume Social Justice Conference, the Australia Council for Education Research Conference, at Iwaki Auditorium, at the Melbourne Town Hall, and for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall during their visit in 2012. The project has also recently afforded students the opportunity to work directly with the

Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor, Diego Matheuz, and superstar violinists Ray Chen and Nicola Benedetti. Through the generous donations of supporters, the program remains completely free of charge to its participants. The MSO provides all instruments, and weekly instrumental and aural lessons lead by a team of MSO teaching artists, and the option for children, families and teachers to access MSO concerts. On the basis of the extraordinary motivation now being experienced by students, further support is currently being sought to ensure the project – and its potential for these students and others – is realised into the future. To find out how you can contribute to The Pizzicato Effect, please call Ben Lee, Philanthropy Executive on (03) 9626 1248 or email leeb@mso.com.au

SUPPORT MSO’S EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES Share your love of music. Many of our diverse and inspiring initiatives are made possible by the generosity of our donor community. Your gift helps us provide exciting and engaging experiences to over 40,000 people in Victoria. You can experience first-hand the positive impact your donation makes by: • Witnessing the pure joy on a child’s face as they discover the wonders of an orchestra for the first time.

• Placing an instrument in the hands of a disadvantaged child and watching their journey unfold through the The Pizzicato Effect program. • Supporting talented young high school musicians to connect with our MSO musicians.

• Seeing more young people enjoying the energy and power of the MSO, in concert, through subsidising their seat. • Sharing the MSO’s free iPhone app, MSO Learn with family and friends with the knowledge that you have helped sustain an educational resource that is used by over 60,000 across the globe. HOW YOU CAN HELP Supporting the MSO’s education and community engagement activities in 2015 will enable us to reach even more Victorians. To donate online, simply visit mso.com.au/give and select Education Appeal or phone us on (03) 9626 1248. We’d love to hear from you. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible, and donations of over $1,000 entitle you to MSO Patron status and associated benefits. For more information, please contact the Philanthropy Department on (03) 9626 1248 or philanthropy@mso.com.au.

“I firmly believe all children have the right to a music education. Education Week opens a door to music for many kids and it’s imperative that that door stays open. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of our supporters, it need never close.”
