The extraordinary husband-and-wife team of Australianborn violinist Elizabeth and British cellist Rafael Wallfisch join forces with the MSO for this sublime combination of Baroque and Classical masterworks, from Haydn’s sublime concerto to the dazzling virtuosity of Danzi’s variations on a duet from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Sir Andrew Davis conductor Truls Mørk cello
This program features Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4, a work tailor-made for the poetic and luminous playing of Emanuel Ax. In its extravagant story of a spurned lover’s imagined revenge and its vivid changes of mood, Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique is one of the key signposts of the Romantic imagination.
The MSO’s Chief Conductor is joined by a cellist ‘of angelic grace and purity of tone’ (London Telegraph) for the heartfelt lyricism of Schumann’s concerto, a key work in the world of musical Romanticism. Sir Andrew then takes you on a journey through the ardour and heroics of the world’s greatest lover, as imagined in Richard Strauss’ musical adventure.

A major event in Melbourne’s musical life begins with this first concert in Sir Andrew Davis’ cycle of the complete Mahler symphonies, which will be a major feature of Sir Andrew’s work as Chief Conductor in coming seasons. In this unmissable musical experience, he brings together one of Mahler’s first masterworks – his bold and exciting First Symphony – with the Four Last Songs Strauss created as his swan-song to the world of vocal music.
Principal Guest Conductor Diego Matheuz directs this thrilling program, which culminates in Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique symphony which, in its melodic richness and emotional power, it is one of the greatest of all Romantic orchestral works. Scottish-born violinist Nicola Benedetti “brings ... a degree of heat, subtlety and quicksilver colours only achieved by the world’s best.” (The Times, London.) She is soloist in Beethoven’s supreme concerto for the violin.

Symphony No.2 Resurrection

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Sir Andrew Davis conductor Erin Wall soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers mezzo-soprano Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus
The heart of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is the sublime Allegretto, a walking tune subject to transformations that must have seemed tremendously novel to the work’s first audience in 1813, but now seem dream-like in their perfection. Sir Andrew’s survey of Berlioz’s major works continues in the company of James Ehnes. As Gramophone magazine said of this magnificent musician: ‘You get the feeling every time he puts bow to string that something special will, quite naturally, just happen.’
Mahler’s music is at once epic and intimate, exultant and despairing, the revelations of a humanist in search of faith. He described his Second Symphony as ‘the most important thing that I have done.’ The finale is radiant with the certainty of eternal life. For these landmark concert events – the second part of Sir Andrew’s multi-season cycle of Mahler symphonies – the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor will be joined by the MSO Chorus and superb international soloists.

EAST MEETS WEST: MSO CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION WITH TAN DUN Friday 7 February, 6.30pm Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne Tan Dun, one of the most important musicians of our time, returns to Melbourne to help the city celebrate Chinese New Year, in this special concert in which two of his major works share the program with classics from the Western tradition. His concerto for Pipa was inspired by Chinas’ Ghost Opera tradition, where shamans communicate with spirits from the past and future and establish dialogues between nature and the human soul. In his Triple Resurrection, Dun celebrates the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth with a spectacular piece of orchestral drama. Lu Siqing, on of China’s finest violinists, is soloist in Mendelssohn’s eternally popular violin concerto, and this program concludes with the powerfully y emotional music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet score.
