FEEL EVERY MOMENT SEASON 2023
Under the leadership of Jaime Martín and our Artistic Family, I am thrilled to share a season of highlights with Inyou.addition to our mainstage program, 2023 will also see the MSO make an impact offstage. Through our performances and engagement with regional Victorians, our deepening relationships with international partners, and our digital concert hall MSO.LIVE, we strive to reach music lovers wherever they are. My deepest thanks go to MSO musicians and staff for their continued passion for our wonderful organisation.
Jaime Martín Chief Conductor Sophie Galaise Managing Director Season
I trust you will find joy in witnessing our Orchestra and amazing guest soloists perform five of the greatest violin concertos ever. This Season we also profile Sergei Rachmaninov’s 150th Anniversary. I thank the MSO musicians and the entire team behind the scenes for their tireless dedication in helping me curate a year filled with classics, hidden treasures, and a surprise or two. I am excited to give you our 2023 Season.
And, of course, to you; whether you are renewing your subscription, joining for the first time or reconnecting after a few years out of the concert hall, as an MSO subscriber you are part of the lifeblood that will see us thrive for generations to come.
Thank you. I look forward to welcoming you in the concert hall.
2023 2 Welcome
The beauty and power of the natural world has always been an inspiration to me. As we embrace a more sustainable approach to music-making, it is fitting that nature is central to much of this year’s programming. You are warmly invited to join us on this journey, on stage and behind the scenes. One of the MSO’s strengths is its ability to dedicate itself equally to Australian and First Nations voices as to the European composers; it is a thread that you will explore through this year’s program as you discover a bounty of local composers.
What a year we have in store!

The music of the innovative Australian composer Mary Finsterer is performed throughout the world. Her award–winning work can be heard on concert stages and on screen, including music for the Hollywood blockbuster Die Hard 4. Her style takes its musical cues from contemporary practice and the Renaissance with equal ease. Her first opera, Biographica, premiered in 2017 and was described as “an outstanding new opera that deserves a permanent place in the repertoire”. Her second opera, Antarctica, recently premiered at the Holland Festival and was described as “magnificent, a milestone for Australian opera”. Finsterer is published by Schott Music, and holds the position of CALE Creative Fellow at the College of Arts, Law and Education at the University of Tasmania.

Ensemble Dutala Residency is supported by the Ullmer Family Foundation and members of MSO First Nations Giving Circle.
The Ensemble Dutala Residency provides emerging First Nations instrumentalists the opportunity to undertake side by side workshops with the MSO, receive mentorship from established MSO players, perform alongside the MSO at the annual Sidney Myer Music Bowl concerts and present a mid-year showcase performance. This Residency, developed in partnership with Short Black Opera, is a first in Australia and redefines the landscape of Indigenous engagement in the arts.

Established by MSO percussionist Robert Cossom in 2004, the Snare Drum Award is designed to encourage the pursuit of excellence in snare drum performance in Australia and New Zealand. Open to undergraduate tertiary students from Australia and New Zealand, this award provides an exclusive opportunity for applicants to further develop audition skills and performance techniques in a professional environment. Join us on 28 August to see the next generation of percussionists compete! The MSO Snare Drum Award is supported by the Hon. Michael Watt QC & Cecilie Hall and Tim & Lyn Edward.
The Cybec Foundation supports the MSO to present the Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers’ Program each year. The program selects four participants to be mentored by leading Australian composers and compose a 10-minute piece. The four pieces are performed by the MSO in a showcase, with one of the participants to be chosen as the MSO’s Young Composer in Residence and commissioned to write further pieces. Since 2003 when the program was introduced, over 80 composers from across Australia have had works commissioned and performed by the MSO. Join us on 28 January for the 20th Anniversary Showcase!Cybec21stCentury Australian Composers’ Program is supported by the Cybec Foundation
