The MSO respectfully acknowledges the people of the Eastern Kulin Nations as the Traditional Custodians of the unceded land on which we work. We acknowledge Elders past and present, and honour the world’s oldest continuing music practice.
MSO Season 2025 is proudly presented by Principal Partner Emirates.
Live orchestral music possesses a distinctive power to deeply immerse both musicians and audiences into the essence of a work. The flow of emotion between stage and auditorium creates a singular experience.
Our ability to feel and connect often manifests through our physical gestures more than our words. Hands, as conveyors of emotion, offer a glimpse into our inner realms. Whether we’re performing, listening, anticipating or applauding, hands bridge the gap between instrument and musician, emotion and experience.
Season 2025 is here!
Welcome to a year of musical journeys and adventures; we are so excited for you to join us once again.
We turn our attention to Maurice Ravel, whose 150th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year. I am also thrilled to continue the MSO’s exploration of the symphonies of Mahler and Dvořák.
It is a joyous process to program a season, and I am certain that you will be thrilled by the results in these pages and on the stage next year. To all those who have worked behind the scenes—across Programming, Operations and Customer Experience, as well as MSO musicians and the wider Artistic Family—thank you for your hard work and dedication.
To our subscribers and community, thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to performing for you in 2025.
Yours in music,
Jaime Martín 2025 MSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Chair supported by Besen Family Foundation.
Welcome to the MSO’s Season 2025, and what a season it will be under Jaime Martín.
We look forward to welcoming artists including Lang Lang, Joyce DiDonato, Daniil Trifonov and our 2025 Artist in Residence, James Ehnes back to Hamer Hall, and we invite you to join us for other blockbuster moments including Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert.
Once again, collaboration will play an important role across 2025. We will present our friends from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in February, and participate in Asia TOPA for the first time in almost a decade.
Australian music takes centre stage in our 2-day Composing Australia festival, and we celebrate 60 years of the MSO Chorus throughout the year.
To those who have been with us for decades, and to those yet to take your seat in the MSO concert hall, I look forward to having you with us in 2025.
See you in the concert hall,
Sophie Galaise MSO Managing Director

Ravel La Valse
Liza Lim* Cello Concerto: A Sutured World^ Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4
Why do so many great poets celebrate the ‘crack that lets the light get in’? In Liza Lim’s A Sutured World the cello pours out a vein of illumination that binds different orchestral worlds together. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony marked the composer’s triumphant climb out of a period of depression, while Ravel’s La Valse is a musical paradox, hitching a crumbling past to an oncoming sense of the modern.

Metropolis Festival
Have you ever wondered how composers get inspired? Have you ever tuned into a sound in your world, or had your breath taken away by an epic view, or felt carried along by a story?
Metropolis showcases today’s Australian composers who listen, feel, respond and make music that embraces city rhythms, mythic poetry, and a sense of awe for the natural world. We hear two ancient instruments— didgeridoo and guzheng—come into new alignments with the colours and energies of the orchestra.

Liza Lim’s Sappho/bioluminescence makes expressive bedfellows of a squid that camouflages itself by glowing like the night sky, Sappho’s poetry and luminous instruments. William Barton and Matthew Hindson’s Kalkadunga has become a modern classic melding the propulsive energies of Barton’s didgeridoo with an orchestra in full flight.
