A message from the Minister for Creative Industries

A message from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Welcome to one of Melbourne’s iconic cultural events – Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Sidney Myer Free Concerts.

I am delighted to welcome you to the much-loved annual Sidney Myer Free Concert Series.

A popular summer tradition that dates back to the 1920s, the concerts have supported hundreds of thousands of people to discover and revel in the beauty of classical music. Each year our highly acclaimed MSO brings to life the work of some of the world’s greatest composers and provides an entrée into what it has in store for its upcoming season. I hope the concerts inspire you to discover more great cultural experiences here in our creative state in the year ahead. Martin Foley MP Minister for Creative Industries

The MSO, Australia’s longeststanding professional orchestra, is a fundamental part of the Melbourne’s cultural offering and these concerts continue to be some of the greatest events on Melbourne’s summer calendar. We are proud to offer a constantly evolving program of accessible, live symphonic music to our many diverse audiences. A GIFT TO MELBOURNE THE SIDNEY MYER MUSIC BOWL On behalf of the Trustees of the Estate of Sidney Myer, and the Myer family, welcome to the Sidney Myer Free Concerts for 2018. Sidney Myer loved music, and particularly outdoor music. It was his love of music and outdoor performances that led to the development of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The Bowl was opened in 1959 and since then has provided a world class venue for outdoor performance of all kinds. The Bowl is now a key piece of the cultural infrastructure of Melbourne.

Its cultural importance and architectural significance led to the Bowl being placed on the Victorian Heritage List. These Free Concerts, drawing together the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the University of Melbourne, and the Estate of Sidney Myer, have been and will continue to be an important part of a musical summer in the City of Melbourne. I invite you to enjoy the music this year in the Bowl, one of the many legacies left to Victoria and Australia by Sidney Myer. Sid Myer AM Chairman, Estate of Late Sidney B. Myer
