secondary and vce students

From meeting the music to making it, the MSO has a selection of Secondary-specific events to take musical knowledge and passion to a new level.

Luke Dollman conductor

Join Melbourne-based composer Katy Abbott as she presents her new work – Introduced Species – in a live performance workshop at three schools across metropolitan Melbourne. Inspired by the paintings of the same title by Australian artist, Matthew Quick, Katy’s composition explores the impact that human interference can have on music in the same way that Matthew’s art explores the impact that human interference can have on our environment. Supported by a comprehensive online resource, the performance workshops will include: • a performance of the work by musicians of the MSO; • a detailed analysis of the work by the composer;

Secondary Symphony Project

Open Rehearsals

Richard Gill conductor Musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

A behind-the-scenes look at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for your class

Secondary schools are invited to nominate students to join musicians of the MSO for a special project designed to put the students in the spotlight at Education Week in 2014. Participating students will be seated side-by-side with their professional counterpart in an exciting new initiative for young musicians wanting to perform with the MSO, which will culminate in a public performance for fellow students, family and friends at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 29 May.

Attending an Open Rehearsal provides a wonderful insight into how professional musicians work together with a conductor to prepare a concert program. Students have the chance to observe a rehearsal, meet MSO musicians – and possibly even the conductor or soloist – and ask questions about their profession. Please note that access to the MSO’s Open Rehearsals is subject to guest artist agreement, date availability and group size. Groups of more than 30 students may be charged a servicing fee.

nominations Each school may nominate up to two string players, two woodwind, two brass and one percussion to participate in this program. From these nominations, the MSO will offer places to up to 40 students, subject to instrumentation requirements and capacity. Confirmation of a place in the program and other program details, including repertoire and final schedule, will be communicated to the schools by close of Term 1, 2014.

• an introduction to Matthew Quick’s artwork; • a discussion around the environment. A draft score of Introduced Species will be available for purchase from the Australian Music Centre from the start of Term 1. This will be automatically updated once the final version has been lodged in the week following these performances.

“Up Close and Musical has become a key activity in our music curriculum. To be able to take our students to hear a composer speak in-depth about their work, hear it performed by some of the best professional musicians in Australia, and then get to meet the performers at the end of the workshop, is an opportunity too good to miss.”

“What an amazing experience. Within one session the students morphed into dynamo packed performers, supporting and encouraging one another and producing creative music. Reluctant students were soon swept away in these inspirational and creative sessions, empowering them with the self confidence to be able to share what they had learnt with other students back at school. This experience will help provide lifelong memories for many of our students.”

the pizzicato effect The Pizzicato Effect is a partnership between the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Meadows Primary School which creates new learning pathways for children in Broadmeadows through the introduction of instrumental music teaching. The pilot program commenced in 2009 to provide a shared focus for two schools which were merging at the time as a result of a community regeneration project. In 2014, the program will provide access to quality music education for students across the whole school, commencing with Kodály training, and progressing to group instrumental lessons on violin, viola, cello or double bass. Upon entering Grade 5, those displaying a connection to their instrument are invited to continue their tuition in a more individualised environment. Additionally, an after-school string orchestra provides senior students in the program with the opportunity to further their skills as instrumentalists and learn to work, respond and play together in an ensemble environment. The MSO provides all instruments and weekly instrumental and aural lessons lead, by a team of MSO teaching artists. Performance opportunities and the option for children, families and teachers to access MSO concerts are also facilitated. The impact of the program within the school and the Broadmeadows community has been very positive. The children have developed a strong relationship with their MSO mentors and a love of music, and their classroom teachers have reported improved focus, self confidence, grades and behaviour. Formal research into the developmental assets, social-emotional wellbeing and educational impact acquired from participation in The Pizzicato Effect is currently being conducted by the University of Melbourne.

18

The Pizzicato Effect is generously supported by a number of individual donors and Foundations. On the basis of the impact, momentum and extraordinary motivation now being experienced, further support is currently being sought to ensure the project and its potential for these students and others is realised into the future. To find out how you can contribute to The Pizzicato Effect, please call Jessica Frean at the MSO on (03) 96261107 or email freanj@mso.com.au

The Schapper Family Foundation

“This program is affording our children so many valuable opportunities, and the transformation in the children and their confidence across all areas of learning and social interaction is without doubt. Yet the single most important achievement and benefit of this initiative, from my perspective, is that The Pizzicato Effect is helping our children take pride in who they are.”

Julie Cooke, Principal, Meadows Primary School

“Learning the double bass has taught me how to be more confident. And I feel like that confidence goes with me a little bit everywhere now.”
