BeethovenSeries 2020
In 2020, the MSO will join orchestras around the world to celebrate the brilliance of Ludwig van Beethoven. The MSO will feature Beethoven as you’ve never seen him before. His Ninth will be physically embodied by Circa Contemporary Circus, and paired with musical interpretations by Deborah Cheetham AO and Tan Dun. The Emperor will be juxtaposed with a co-commission by Brett Dean.
Look for the BTHVN2020 logo throughout this brochure, or curate your own year of Beethoven as part of a Create Your Own Series (p.33).
2
We will participate in the Beethoven Pastoral Project; a global event. And some of the world’s leading Beethoven artists will perform your favourite symphonies and the great concertos.

Friday 5 June / 7.30pm Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor Narek Hakhnazaryan cello Glazunov Chant du ménestrel Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Beethoven Symphony No.6 Pastoral Music to make a difference. On World Environment Day, the MSO will participate in the United Nations-led Beethoven Pastoral Project to raise awareness and inspire our city to take a stance on climate change. For Beethoven, nature was a place of relaxation, solitude and inspiration. His Sixth Symphony musically depicts the harmonious unity between mankind and nature. Today, nature is under threat and humankind is on a course to destroy our environment and livelihood. The MSO is thrilled to invite back a conductor who has a long association with this country, Russian-born, Iceland-based Vladimir Ashkenazy. A man who made his international reputation as much by his resistance to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev as by his incredible musical output, Ashkenazy will return to lead this wonderful tribute to the environment. Armenian star cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan will join Ashkenazy and the MSO to perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a piece he has perfected over years with the world’s best orchestras.

Deborah Cheetham Dutala (Star-Filled Sky) ^ MSO COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE
Beethoven Symphony No.9 In a unique commission by the MSO, Circa Contemporary Circus dares to create a physical score for the towering masterpiece of the symphonic repertoire – Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Under the artistic direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, ten world-class acrobats journey to and beyond the extreme with emotionally-charged choreography intricately woven into Beethoven’s immortal Ninth Symphony. In this first-ever collaboration between Circa and the MSO, human drama is writ large – powerful emotions, extreme skill and dramatic acrobatics play out in this epic celebration of humanity. What will make this evening even more memorable is the world premiere of Deborah Cheetham AO’s musical response to Beethoven’s Ninth, bringing the music of western classical music together with Australian indigenous culture. ^ World premiere of MSO commission

Mid-Season Gala ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, HAMER HALL
Starring our 2020 Soloist in Residence!
Let us warm your winter with Elgar’s magnificent Violin Concerto, Mussorgsky’s grand Pictures at an Exhibition, and a new work from our Composer in Residence, Deborah Cheetham AO.
Elgar Violin Concerto Mussorgsky / Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti was named BBC Young Performer of the Year in 2004, at age sixteen; she studied at the renowned Menuhin school in Surrey. The founder of that school was the late, great violinist Yehudi Menuhin, and he made his name as a youngster with a recording of Elgar’s Violin Concerto, conducted by the composer himself. That Benedetti is returning to MSO to play that precise piece feels like the closing of a circle. The Orchestra will also perform the wonderfully evocative and intensely visual Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, a masterclass in how to extract all the colour and drama an orchestra can provide. Opening this special evening will be a world premiere from MSO Composer in Residence, Deborah Cheetham AO. * Supported by MSO Life Members, Marc Besen AC and Eva Besen AO ^ World premiere of MSO commission

Season Finale Gala ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, HAMER HALL
Nothing prepares you for the intensity and grandeur of Orff’s Carmina Burana played live. Those opening notes sound like great crashing gods bursting through the skies to wake the dead. Immense and thundering, they usher in a work as recognisable as it is thrilling.

Carmina Burana
Stravinsky Petrushka Suite Orff Carmina Burana There has been much discussion about what precisely makes this work so effective and immediate. It has little musical development and none of the complex harmonisation you’d expect from a choral work of this size, but it does have a wonderful driving rhythmic structure, and grand shifts in mood. There is as much light and joy in Carmina Burana as there is ferocity and bombast. Orff based his cantata on a collection of medieval poems composed in Latin, Middle High German and Old French that range in theme from the ephemeral nature of fortune, to the pleasures and perils of gambling, drinking and love-making. It’s quite earthy, and has more in common with Chaucer than Nietzsche; it is, therefore, the perfect choice for our Season Finale Gala. The brilliant Italian conductor Andrea Molino returns to MSO to conduct this mammoth work, with an appearance by Australian star Emma Matthews. The MSO Chorus are the real stars, though, and will undoubtedly inspire rapturous applause.

A beloved Christmas tradition, this rousing performance of Handel’s Messiah is conducted by one of the world’s leading Handel experts, Nicholas McGegan.

Messiah
Handel Messiah It may be the most sacred experience you can have outside a house of prayer; indeed, it was so exalted a theme that London authorities were reluctant to let it be performed inside a theatre. Handel composed his oratorio celebrating the life, death and resurrection of Christ in 1741, in what was apocryphally thought a burst of divine inspiration, but was more likely his typical speed and acuity. And despite the grandiose performance history, his composition is guided as much by orchestral restraint as religious fervour. Nicholas McGegan OBE has been hailed “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent), and has produced more than 50 recordings of Handel over a six-decade career. With the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the MSO Chorus and world-class soloists at his disposal, Messiah is in assured hands. If you are yet to witness the MSO perform Messiah, let 2020 be the year you take your seat and enjoy one of the most communal experiences any orchestra can offer.

Support your MSO
Support your MSO “ Adopting a musician is a very personal way for a musician to receive gratitude from the audience. This is why I chose to become involved in the Adopt a Musician Program. I know from spending time with my adopted musicians – Kathryn, Chris, Sarah and Michelle – just how much they truly appreciate my involvement in the program, and how it has touched them. The Adopt a Musician Program is not only a satisfying way to donate to the Orchestra, it is also a powerful tool for displaying your gratitude to the musicians of the Orchestra and adds a beautiful, human element.”
Additional ways to support the Orchestra Ticket sales cover only 39% of our annual costs, so philanthropic support is vital to sustaining our activities now and into the future. There are many ways to support your Orchestra and the things you care about: •
