Good evening, and welcome to Legacy: Lalah Hathaway sings Donny Hathaway. It is a pleasure to reunite with our friends at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival for this special event. Our MIJF concerts are always a hit, and tonight’s performance is set to be no exception.
Congratulations to Hadley and his team on the successful return of the Jazz Festival in 2022. It is one of the highlights of Melbourne’s music calendar, and it is fitting that so many people will come together inside Hamer Hall for tonight’s collaboration.
In addition to our wonderful musicians you will see on stage, as well as Lalah Hathaway and her band, I would also like to acknowledge the talented MSO and MIJF teams who have worked hard to present tonight’s performance.
I hope you enjoy sharing the music and the sense of occasion tonight. It is wonderful to have you with us.
Established in 1906, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is Australia’s pre-eminent orchestra and a cornerstone of Victoria’s rich, cultural heritage.
Each year, the MSO engages with more than 5 million people, presenting in excess of 180 public events across live performances, TV, radio and online broadcasts, and via its online concert hall, MSO.LIVE, with audiences in 56 countries.
With a reputation for excellence, versatility and innovation, the MSO works with culturally diverse and First Nations leaders to build community and deliver music to people across Melbourne, the state of Victoria and around the world.
In 2022, the MSO’s new Chief Conductor, Jaime Martín has ushered in an exciting new phase in the Orchestra’s history. Maestro Martín joins an Artistic Family that includes Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang, Principal Conductor in Residence, Benjamin Northey, Conductor Laureate, Sir Andrew Davis CBE, Composer in Residence, Paul Grabowsky and Young Artist in Association, Christian Li.
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra respectfully acknowledges the people of the Eastern Kulin Nations, on whose un‑ceded lands we honour the continuation of the oldest music practice in the world.
On behalf of MIJF, we are thrilled to welcome you to our special collaboration with Australia’s leading symphony orchestra. This is something we eagerly look forward to every year, and this is a proud central component of the Festival’s annual programming.
In one of the headlining performances of the 2022 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and continuing the Festival’s rich history of extraordinary premieres, we are thrilled to welcome one of the globe’s finest vocalists, Lalah Hathaway. In another stunning annual collaboration with our cultural partners, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, we are so proud to bring this living legend of R&B, soul and jazz, and 5-time GRAMMY® Award winner to our shores for MIJF 2022.
Lalah Hathaway is one of the finest vocalists in the world who I have hoped to see at the festival for over a decade. Her vocal prowess is undeniable, and her soulful jazz expression and technical virtuosity unparalleled. This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to see a true modern master alongside Australia’s leading symphony orchestra.
This will be a performance we talk about for many years to come.
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF) is Australia’s leading platform for the presentation of jazz and improvised music. Now in its 25th year, MIJF is guided by its mission to lead an inclusive, progressive and world-renowned Australian jazz sector.
Over ten days in October, MIJF’s annual program features over 100 performances, showcasing 400+ artists and attracting over 50,000 attendees.
As Australia’s premiere jazz festival, MIJF connects Australian artists and audiences with the world’s leading exponents of jazz and improvised music; champions collaboration through cross-cultural exchange and the co-presentation of major public outcomes with leading cultural institutions; commissions new work and presents world premieres; champions sector development through a range of yearround artist development programs, initiatives and education partnerships; leads the national jazz programming agenda and brokers inbound and outbound artist tours; and promotes access and participation—presenting over a third of its program for free or at low cost across greater Melbourne.
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our festival takes place—the people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. We are honoured to contribute to the rich history of music making and storytelling that has taken place on these lands.

Legacy: Lalah Hathaway Sings Donny HathawayLalah Hathaway is a 5 x GRAMMY® award-winning singer/songwriter and producer and 10-time nominee. Undeniable music royalty and a 30-year music industry veteran, Lalah’s music transcends genre – from R&B ballads to pop standards and soulful jazz – she has collaborated with today’s top hitmakers, including Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Anderson. Paak and Snoop Dogg. Lalah has also shared the stage with music legends, from Prince to Stevie Wonder to Anita Baker.
Film and television credits include appearing as herself in the 2017 hit film Girls Trip, as the wedding singer in the series finale of BET’s Being Mary Jane, a cameo in Yvette Nicole Brown’s film Always A Bridesmaid, and features as a special guest on the latest season of Family Reunion on Netflix.
Lalah headlined the Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors summer concert series in 2019 with sold-out show Legacy: Lalah Hathaway Sings Donny Hathaway. Lalah also served as a featured artist on the lost album of the legendary Miles Davis appearing on single So Emotional. This year, Lalah’s song Show Me Your Soul, from the hit documentary Mr. Soul!, was featured on the Oscars 2021 shortlist for Best Original Song.
Legacy: Lalah Hathaway Sings Donny Hathaway withIn the first project of its kind in Australia, the MSO has developed a musical Acknowledgment of Country with music composed by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham AO, featuring Indigenous languages from across Victoria. Generously supported by Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Commonwealth Government through the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, the MSO is working in partnership with Short Black Opera and Indigenous language custodians who are generously sharing their cultural knowledge.
The Acknowledgement of Country allows us to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we perform in the language of that country and in the orchestral language of music.
In all the world, only Australia can lay claim to the longest continuing cultures and we celebrate this more today than in any other time since our shared history began. We live each day drawing energy from a land which has been nurtured by the traditional owners for more than 2000 generations. When we acknowledge country we pay respect to the land and to the people in equal measure.
As a composer I have specialised in coupling the beauty and diversity of our Indigenous languages with the power and intensity of classical music. In order to compose the music for this Acknowledgement of Country Project I have had the great privilege of working with no fewer than eleven ancient languages from the state of Victoria, including the language of my late Grandmother, Yorta Yorta woman Frances McGee. I pay my deepest respects to the elders and ancestors who are represented in these songs of acknowledgement and to the language custodians who have shared their knowledge and expertise in providing each text.
I am so proud of the MSO for initiating this landmark project and grateful that they afforded me the opportunity to make this contribution to the ongoing quest of understanding our belonging in this land.
