Conductor CHLOÉ VAN SOETERSTÈDE Chloé van Soeterstède is attracting the attention of orchestras across the globe for her intuitive, sensitive, expressive musicmaking and her commanding and positive presence on the podium. She is praised repeatedly for her attention to detail, her energy and enthusiasm, and efficiency in rehearsal. She is forging some excellent relationships with orchestras across Europe, the UK and the US and in 2023 makes her Australian/New Zealand debut. 23/24 season highlights include debuts with the Philharmonia and Hallé, in Europe with the Bilbao Symphony and Lausanne Chamber orchestras, in the US with Colorado Springs Symphony and at Lincoln Center, New York, with the Orchestra Now and further afield with the Auckland Philharmonia, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony orchestras. She will also return to the Orlando Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Gävle Symphony and RTVE Symphony (Madrid) orchestras. In recent years Van Soeterstède has conducted widely across the UK and Europe, and in the US the LA Philharmonic, with whom she was a Dudamel fellow in the 21/22 season. She studied the viola in Paris and at the Royal Academy of Music London and then conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, and was appointed the Taki Alsop Fellow in 2019 by Marin Alsop.
Presenter NICHOLAS BOCHNER After training in Adelaide and London, Nicholas spent 3 years as Artist-in-Residence at the University of Queensland as part of the ensemble Perihelion, forging a strong reputation as an exponent of contemporary music. He joined the MSO as Assistant Principal Cello in 1998. Since then he has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist. He has also taught cello and improvisation at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Nicholas has always had a strong commitment to music education and community engagement. In 2010 he was awarded the Dame Roma Mitchell Churchill Fellowship to study the LSO’s iconic Discovery program and the use of improvisation in training classical musicians at the Guildhall School of Music. In 2016, Nicholas’ considerable experience as an orchestral musician and his passion for communication led him to undertake a fellowship at ANAM where he developed, conducted and presented educational concerts for primary school children. During the fellowship he was mentored by Paul Rissmann, Graham Abbott and the legendary Richard Gill AO. Since then he has presented educational concerts for children and adults for MSO, ANAM and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. In 2020 he was named the MSO’s Cybec Assistant Conductor for Learning and Engagement. He is also the conductor of the Melbourne University Biomedical Students’ Orchestra. In support of his work as an education presenter, Nicholas has been studying conducting with Benjamin Northey and won a coveted place at the TSO’s 2019 Australian Conducting Academy.

ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841–1904)
Opus the opus number is a system of labelling to chronologically keep up with a composer’s output.
• Dvořák’s Symphony No.5 was composed in 1875 and premiered in 1879. • The symphony was composed in just six weeks. • Although originally given the opus number 24 by Dvořák, his publisher labelled it opus number 76 with an effort to boost sales, labelling the work as a newer, more mature work. • While Dvořák, like Smetana, championed Czech folk music, most of his folk melodies are in fact original tunes that are created in the style of the folk music. • Brahms was a mentor and guide to Dvořák and his influence is often discussed, but there is a view that Dvořák’s 5th symphony was in fact an influence on Brahms’ 3rd.
Cyclic form a compositional technique involving the repetition of a theme, melody or thematic motif in more than one section or movement across the work, in order to unify structure. An intermezzo is a short composition which slots in between other musical entities, often for comedic or dramatic relief. In a romantic context, an intermezzo was typically a lyrical middle movement, contrasting to its outer movements. Bohemia an area of the West Czech Republic, formerly a province of Czechoslovakia (1918–1949). From 1939 until 1945 it formed part of the German protectorate of BohemiaMoravia Czech name: Čechy.
