Virtuosity

Virtuosity Virtuosity is a concerto soloist development program offering future soloists the chance to learn from the best. For any budding musician, learning and playing a concerto piece is considered to be an essential part of their education and a standard requirement for most orchestral auditions. However, it is rare for young musicians to have the opportunity to rehearse and perform a concerto with full-sized, orchestral accompaniment. Virtuosity participants will learn the artistic differences and challenges of concerto playing alongside a full-sized ensemble while being mentored by industry professionals. Virtuosity takes part in three stages: online application, Semi-Final performance and the Grand Final. Throughout each stage, participants will be given support and guidance for them to be the best musician they can be.

APPLICATIONS Applicants must be Victorian residents, aged 15 to 25 years as at 1 January, 2016. Applicants will select a solo work or movement with orchestral accompaniment, and provide a recording of themselves playing the solo part. The piece must not exceed 15 minutes. Applicants should ensure the orchestral parts are suitable for performance by Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra. Recordings may be supplied as YouTube links, audio files, or on USB drive, recorded in a single take. It is not necessary to use an accompanist for the video recording. Online applications are open until Friday 19 February, 2016.

APPLICATION FEE $60

Virtuosity is the ideal springboard into professional concerto performance for any aspiring soloist.

Teacher Professional Development Program Successfully conducting an ensemble is both an art and a craft, which requires skill, empathy, and inspirational leadership that goes beyond being an excellent musician and administrator. Melbourne Youth Music’s esteemed educators are now delivering a new Teacher Professional Development Program, designed to help Victorian teachers acquire the professional skills and knowledge needed to deliver inspiring ensembles in their own schools and communities.

WHAT IS INVOLVED? The Teacher Professional Development Program is designed as a series of self-contained but connected courses exploring different areas of ensemble music pedagogy. Each course is 10 hours’ duration and to suit the needs of regional and rural teachers, courses are delivered online and in the teacher’s own time. Courses culminate in an in-person session with fellow participants and the course educator at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. This session will include a rehearsal observation workshop to demonstrate course methodologies in action and provide an insight into Melbourne Youth Music’s renowned Ensemble Program.

ACCREDITATION Outcomes, standards, volume of learning and documentation are in alignment with the Professional Development framework of Australian Professional Standards for Teachers within the domains of knowledge, practice and engagement, ensuring a strong alignment to
